her fingers in the sand. a kitten purrs.

the air in her breath is warm and salty.

her eyes can't make out anything for the sun. slowly, she sits up to see the cat. sand slides from her shoulders, massaging her legs.

the cat rolls down her chest and smacks her legs. it was purring, but now it's pissed, turning to its feet again and yelling in a shrill male voice:

ALICE! YOU MUST CEASE DESTRUCTION OF NEUROMUTE PROPERTY IMMEDIATELY.

the cat talked!!

this beach is beautiful, though. the waves working just out of sight are quiet. the sand is fine and clean. there's no one else around.

just this cat. it won't stop moving. it's got orange stripes. it's like the sand.

saten slowly reaches for the cat on her lap. it looks just like a normal cat. it's got sandy orange stripes and a small head and a tongue to lick itself and a usb tail ...

she gasps and follows the cat's back down to its tail, a pure white plastic cable with a usb plug on the end, complete with the little logo. is this really attached? she pulls the plastic tail a bit and the whine returns, warning:

a chill grows in her chest. she backs away and then begins to run.

she expects to hear from the cat, but there's nothing to hear but her own steps in the sand.

she doesn't notice the sky. as she runs, clouds draw in. the sun, low, is soon gone, and a cold breeze touches her skin.

this isn't good. i only have my bathing suit on. i have to find shelter.

but all she sees is beach. a strong wave breaks, and cold water drills pain into her.

she starts running away from the water but she feels sick. the clouds are turning dark and churning down to the horizon. the wind is constant.

the clouds drop below the horizon and she looks down and she sees the beach shooting away, the water and the sand two panes in a stained glass window, turning faster and faster and then the usb cat is right in her face.

she starts to scream but the cat is blocking her mouth. she can feel its warmth on her cheeks. the rest of her body is shaking from the cold.

what is going on?? help!!

she pulls the cat away from her face and:

snow catches on her eyelashes and she blinks and it digs into her eyes. but she can tell there is something moving in the snow.

she claws her eyes free of snow with her shuddering hands and she sees the shadow moving behind the snow.

she reaches out weakly with her hand, but it disappears into the shadow. after a moment, before she can feel the pain, she spins back and back and back and ...

... there is something warm on her face. she starts and grabs at it. it's the usb cat.

she is shaking too hard to talk. she can't think. she tries to move her jaw to speak: help.

YOU MUST TRANSFORM.

she's not one to give up, but she doesn't know how to "transform." she doesn't even know which esper power that's supposed to be. she should have paid more attention in class.

she reaches up to her forehead because there is something cold up there, something she didn't know she was wearing.

she fingers it but she feels nothing. she squeezes the cat trying to warm her fingers.

she feels the cat's cold wire tail.

she passes the end of it.

she understands.

saten spins in the wind, snow driving into her body, her mouth quaking, her skin all numb, her vision gone, her world black.

she plugs the cat into her forehead and screams:

now there is nothing.

it's much quieter than falling asleep. there's nothing at all to see, not even what she usually sees when she closes her eyes and sees something different, something only she can see.

she closes her eyes and sees something different, something only she can see. she opens her eyes and there is less, only black.

there is no snow now, no wind. she is still floating, but she feels nothing from her frozen body.

she reaches up and finds the usb cable extending from her forehead. she feels down the cable in the dark and finds the cat floating right before her. it's warm and soft. it's the same as it has always been.

hello?

the cat does not respond. it's purring, though. the waves working out of sight are quiet. can she hear them?

letting go of the cat, she's sure she can hear them. the purrs are louder and louder.

as the warm waves break on her sandy skin, she doesn't know what to do. she feels them coming from the cat. they're tickling her skin under her bathing suit.

the noise is definitely affecting her. a new shiver begins and ends and she hears her backbone popping. but it's still popping.

louder and louder, higher and higher.

the usb cat is in her face again, shaking. it's making the popping noise that's also coming from her own body. she tries to bat it away, but she's held in place against a wall. she's stuck up against the cat. someone is zipping them up together. zipping faster and faster.

the cat is growing. its fur is around her neck. the sound is all around her head. it is the cat screaming.

she can't move her arms. she is going to gasp but then it explodes.

it is a supernova in her face. her head is a gong. the universe grows and her bathing suit is stretched and torn from her body. light pierces a crack in the black and passes through millions of fragments of the sandy cat on its way to her three eyes. she is dazzled. and then she hears all of them.

each kind of rock sounds different. she knows them all by name. one is a jig from america in the 1920s. and another is a conga. sometimes she downloads stuff just for the hell of it.

this one's a slow waltz. this one's a much faster waltz.

and this one's ... in 17/8. do people even dance to that?

she can hear them all at once.

the faster rocks slow to match the others, but the slow ones have already sped up. and some are adding beats and some are losing them. which ones are adding and which ones are subtracting?

the sand is lonely.

light is passing through, but she can't tell by looking at them which rocks need to pass in front of the others. she can hear them, though.

she turns her head.

it's a sideways 8, each rock its own racecar. she realizes they will eventually pass the center at the same time.

she hears millions of them at once. the light is brighter and brighter, passing through them and showing her what they look like together. one by one, they are checked off, but she doesn't think of them one by one.

all at once, she thinks of them. the sideways 8 is on her face around her first two eyes. her third eye hears them.

they are joining one another. tiny geometric shapes shine lights on the black. there are more different shapes than there are stars in the night sky in the countryside. they are all mirrors, reflecting the light from her face back into her three eyes. they are louder and louder.

her eyes change and she sees a thousand eyes looking back at her in the tiny mirrors. some are in 5/4 but lose a beat and then there are a million more mirrors. more mirrors and more eyes and more eyes and more mirrors and more eyes. faster and faster, more and more and more and more and more. they are splitting and joining one another. they are all eyes.

they are the green eyes of the cat, hunting. in a blink, they are her eyes.

she sees her own body from everywhere at once. the black shell around her is cracking open with light from her eyes.

the mirrors with her eyes in them are shimmering with the mirage of a billion more eyes. she sees them melting. she sees everything at once. she sees that the entire universe is her body.

the eye drops fall like rain on her face, over her three closed eyes and down her cheeks and into her mouth and down her throat and down her chest and down her stomach and down her legs and around her feet and back up her legs and butt and back and neck. her tears have eyes. they are hot in her skin. her hair sees her eyes fall against her back.

they are slowing as they dry. she can see them circling her like a suit of armor, a trillion tiny mirrors, each an eye, a flower opening down her chest and waist, her legs extending like stamens, her whole universe visible in her body.

her three closed eyes can see through millions of eyes at the bottoms of her earlobes through trillions of eyes, some extending from her shoulders, some following her arms down to her wrists, some in her fingernails, some extending from her waist, some following her legs down to her feet, some in her toenails, some beneath her feet pointed down at the top of her head through to her three eyes which open now and she sees every eye in every eye.

there is no more black. she is everything.

from inside her body, she hears her name:

KNIGHT OF NEUROMUTE: MIRROR SHADE!

She smiles.

She smiles again. She sees the shadow moving behind the snow. She sees inside of it and from inside of it. She is everywhere.

She sees tape passing through its mouth from a single reel before returning there.

IT MUST BE A MERE TURING MACHINE.

The cat also sees everything that she sees.

She lifts Wintermancer into her arms and holds it against her chest, warming it. Its snow is the water her mother sprayed at her playing in the garden as a child.

She loves it. It is one with her.

The sky is blue again. She steps into the sand and it marches up her legs to meet her. The waves wash her silicon legs. She is the beach. She can see the salt reflected in the sand.

She can see herself sleeping on the beach, the USB cat on her chest, purring.

She feels the waves working.

She reaches out to wake herself.

her fingers in the sand.

so after reading the title i put on shpongle 3 before continuing. could definitely feel it in there especially how it goes with the flow of the record/flow of the dream states. so the last line doesn't surprise me at all. trippy indeed. i'm no railgun fan but of course it doesn't matter at all.

it all felt really familiar too like i knew each of the parts from somewhere else. very postmodern.

have you watched waking life yet? the part after she pried open her third eye is very similar tonally so i'm curious. but maybe that's just how dreams are, i wouldn't really know.

if you haven't watched yet then i've got something to talk to you about that i've been thinking about since watching. if you have watched then it wouldn't apply.

now the hair on the cat's back rises through her fingers, the entire cat then launching out from her arms and landing on the deck at her feet, its usb tail whipping in the icy wind, its whining, robotic male announcing: YOU MUST TRANSFORM.

whoa! give me some warning before you do that -

but she's shaken to her knees. did something just hit the ship?

she jumps up and runs to look over the bow. steam rising off the water is too thick to see anything clearly. the wind gusts and punches her in the face, the ship lurching to one side.

there is a sound like a high speed saw cutting into wood. the air is thicker now, with tiny rocks smashing into saten's swelling eyes.

what is this??

the grit infiltrates her mouth and scrapes her teeth like an amateur orthodontist. it doesn't taste like anything.

where is that damn cat?

a snap and the ship's bow rises sharply, throwing saten tumbling, tumbling, tumbling, smashing into the stern wall, her thick parka unable to cushion the impact to her shoulders. there is something hot pouring over the deck and over her as the ship goes under. it is undeterred by her clothing.

there is the smell of burning flesh.

a thousand syringes enter her with a wave of flame that oozes down her shoulders and down her arms, the liquid injected hot and thick, her movement slowed as she is brought over to its side.

her vision is clear as it passes over her eyes.

she remembers something like this happening before, maybe in a dream. it's beautiful, a thousand mirrors covering her body like armor.

suddenly the cat is swept into her face: YOU MUST TRANSFORM.

yes, yes.

liquid glass dripping erotically from her flaming fingers, saten clears a path to her forehead and pulls the usb cattail into her:

an invocation. but to whom? that cat? it didn't even introduce itself.

the glass is gone. the cat is gone, too. saten feels her forehead. there's nothing there - just her skin, clean of blemishes and third degree burns. the remains of her clothes are gone, and her body is free of pain.

she opens her only two eyes and sees only a tiny light shimmering, dimly lighting her body again and again. she is deep underwater.

she gasps without thinking, but in her lungs it seems more like air than water.

the light is moving faster now. or is her body moving?

hot and cold flashes travel through her face and neck and chest and legs as she spins faster and faster, showing her face and back to the light.

it strobes and renders her eyelids useless. she can't tell that there is more than one light now by looking - only by turning her head to hear each go by.

well, at least i'm not epileptic, right?

these lights are lonely, but at some point they are all going to agree. saten's head flicks about as she takes in each group of lights. some groups rotate, some fall in lines, and some just aren't very well behaved. at some point, though, they are all going to agree.

but what then?

don't get distracted. pinwheels consume lesser structures, leaving streamers as evidence. it is like the night sky in the country - but sped up.

the pinwheels glow green as they spin faster and faster now. a slit opens in each center to watch in the dark for neuromute.

galaxies blink in and out of sight, swirling in the cold wind; stars spray across the universe, churning and pushing, bearing many children; and to their children's children's children are born many worlds: alice, for example.

everything is on track.

sparkling waters well up and soak her body, her hair freezing into a fan, her fingers the streamers that reach across the sky, over her head and shoulders a long black frock, her forehead lit by her third eye opening now, showing her what she must do.

KNIGHT OF WINTERMANCER: UNIVERSAL TRUTH!

She smiles.

Now the world is formless and empty, darkness is over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of Saten is hovering over the waters.

And Saten says, "let there be light," and there is light. Saten sees that the light is good, and She separates the light from the darkness. Saten calls the light "Neuromute," and the darkness She calls "Wintermancer."

She also makes the stars, setting them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness.

And Saten says, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." So Saten makes the expanse and separates the water under the expanse from the water above it. And Saten says, "Let the water under be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it is so. Saten calls the dry ground "Kagami," and the gathered waters She calls "Hoshi."

And Saten sees that it is good.

Voices call from above.

Saten turns to see a large bird approaching on two legs, unaware of her, its neck flicking back and forth as it feeds from fruited foliage on the forest floor. Finding an apple, the long neck cocks back in order to swallow it whole, and then, with a flash of blue, the cassowary sees her.

Saten's heart warms and her mouth opens. The bird is no danger to her.

Unmoving, its head holds its brain out of sight. She knows that it is looking at her but nothing more.

She wonders about it. But there is more to do, and she must keep going.

It is easy to walk through the forest. The soil is soft. Ferns brush up against large trunks. A small waterfall channels liquid among large, smooth stones. There is the sound of insects but the sight of none. Saten is a visitor here. She must hurry to the picnic.

She steps along the path and there is something in her way and she has to look up and there is a small monkey's face screaming, pushing her back, shocked.

It is a face full of emotion.

what!? i'm sorry, ok!

Its mouth closing - her apology accepted? - it rounds the trunk and shoots out of sight.

why didn't i see that monkey until i was right on top of it?

She must keep going.

why did they decide to have a picnic in the middle of the forest? well, since we're here on a trip, we might as well make the most of it. it's like we have to, almost.

Saten is glad that the others invited her.

Turning up the mountain, she suddenly sees something very different. With two legs and a face full of emotion, Misaka Mikoto loudly proclaims that someone else should be cooking. Saten can't hear her voice clearly, but she knows exactly what is going on nonetheless. Another Tokiwadai girl, one Saten doesn't know, steps out from behind Mikoto and raises her hands in front of her chest, her palms facing the much taller girl, confirming it.

Saten smiles, waves, and returns an old favor.

misaka-san!

Mikoto turns not quite to Saten, her eyes vibrating in her head as she scans a million different places. The forest floor is somewhat dark.

Saten runs the rest of the way and at what seems like the last possible moment Mikoto's red face turns to her and finally their eyes meet and her expression changes and then she smiles and says in English:

Hello, Saten-san!

english??

uh ... hello!

Did you get lost on the way here?

why is she talking in english?

Saten turns, but the girl laying meat on the grill does not acknowledge her.

is she foreign or something?

um ... no ... very pretty ...

what's the word? it sounds like ... scene? is that it? this is like a quiz! why can't we just talk in japanese?

Sensing that she does not know the other girl, Mikoto offers, still in English:

This is Himeko Kai. I guess you two haven't met.

why won't she speak in japanese?? that's a japanese name, isn't it? does she not understand japanese?

um ... pleased to meet you! my name is ... ruiko! saten!

Kai Himeko desu, and the girl bows low, long black hair almost touching the hot grill.

what is the point of this then? Saten stares at Mikoto, bewildered.

Mikoto smiles back at first, and only then, as her smile slowly fades, her face growing quizzical at Saten's exasperation, does her Tokiwadai sister Himeko finally offer her help, still tending the grill, turning the roasting meat, looking at neither other party, softly: eigo de hanasu no ga yamete hou ga ii ja nai desu ka?

Now Mikoto's face is red again, her familiar Japanese returning: Saten-san, gomen gomen! Watashi, tsui ...

Smiling, laughing now, Saten is relieved that Mikoto wasn't doing it on purpose.

these tokiwadai girls are scary, though!

Uiharu is in the camp playing her DS. She sits alone on one of the wood benches, content.

i can't flip her skirt if she's sitting down!

Saten is careful to approach her from behind, even knowing that Uiharu would not see her if she climbed up on the table in front of her.

The fear that Uiharu will notice her before she can reach her grows nonetheless the closer she comes.

Finally, she is ready, and she gently moves her hands in front of Uiharu's eyes, certainly interrupting something important.

Saten-san!! Don't cover my eyes!!

how does she know it's me?

Disappointed, Saten hops over the bench and leans into Uiharu, peering at the bottom screen. The map turns in 3D and the numbers and the blue bars do not.

Uiharu keeps a firm hold on the game, not allowing it to enter their world, but not looking up from it as she moves her right hand and the map stops and a character fires and one bar evaporates and the enemy character falls and the one she controlled exclaims, I did it!

no, there were just a lot of things to look at. and i got ambushed by a monkey.

Uiharu still does not look up.

well, it wasn't, really. i mean, i was surprised at first, but it was just a little monkey.

Other girls arrive now with their paper plates and plastic forks and knives. Saten wonders whether Mikoto and her friend will sit with them.

Overall, it is a comfortable scene.

Uiharu, I'm going to get us some food. I'll be right back.

Saten wants to see the top.

Alone now, she turns to look at the trail - is it the same one? - further up the mountain.

Passing through the forest, the light growing brighter in her eyes, she is determined.

For some reason, she is looking at a certain tree trunk now, some of the bark having caught her eye, and then it really does move, a green tail appearing, and then the whole chameleon is green, and she is reminded of that passionate girl, Juufuku.

For the shortest imaginable moment it takes to travel from the bottom to the top, a spider exists.

Momentarily as she moves, Saten can see vast amounts of canopy lower on the mountain with a few taller branches protruding. An eagle lands there and wastes no time scanning the surroundings, many eyes in those eyes.

I wish I could do this forever.

Soon she is above the canopy and after she rounds the final bend and hurries to the top she is greeted by a tiny rock embedded in short grass. The wind punches her in the face and the light dazzles her.

She sees everything: the cross-section of the understory on the side of the neighboring mountains, the few tall trees above the infinite, thick foliage of the canopy, and the trail below that brought her here, to the rock.

But the darkness already entering from the west to cover it all is the cymbal of time, crashing through her mind, striking the scene, devouring the evidence, and rending, roasting, and throwing the gutted corpse to the dogs.

Gratitude and pain fall together as the distorted fixture crumples and passes out of sight, hers alone.

Girls' voices call from below.

Afterword:

i had this one planned for a long time but it was very hard to actually write. i guess i didn't have it planned out that well after all!

some of it seems to be about an experience i had in montreal while some of it is more like a generic dream or mindless wandering. as you might guess, though, the whole thing is supposed to represent something. in this case it's one of my studies of consciousness.

for a while i had english translations of the japanese lines in quotes but then i realized it would be way better if i put the reader in the same position as saten if only at a slightly different time.

actually yesterday looking over it i was thinking how 072-unfriendly it is. looking at it today it seems even more so with all the animals. but i really don't think it was on purpose. it's just because i needed characters with whom saten could never hope to converse.

but yesterday i also thought well maybe he could draw the scene by the grill. how do you draw someone speaking english? well, all the time light novels have illustrations where the tie-in with the text is the expressions on the characters' faces. in this case mikotosama is all jolly and welcoming and polite and friendly and himeko is like this zombie who actually cooks her meat and saten is flipping out. or then a moment later mikotosama is flipping out and embarrassed because she just can't help herself and himeko is identical except maybe the top side of the meat is slightly more well done now since she flipped it or her mouth is still open from having defused the situation and saten is laughing nervously and normally you would have a sweatdrop in there like omfg what is wrong with these people.

after i had written the grill part i realized that i didn't have a part planned for kuroko which meant that she probably wouldn't be in it at all. that seems really strange since she's the only one of the four who's not in it and it seems incredible that she wouldn't be standing in between himeko and mikotosama but then i thought well if i try to replace himeko with her (which i wasn't even sure i could pull off) or something then the whole thing would become even more 072-unfriendly.

to answer your question, though: i think it would be amazing.

Haha... I'm not sure it's even possible to write something 072-friendly.

Yeah, this is going to be much more difficult than the last one. Mostly because I can't just make up everything as I go along and hope it turns out okay again. But I'm up for the challenge!!!

So about the other chapters. The only light novels I'm familiar with are the Haruhi Suzumiya ones which basically have a bunch of color illustrations of major events but also a few black and white images per chapter for random situations. Do you want to do it in that style? Like for here I plan to do the former but in other situations it may be better not to go all out.

flipping through my stuff now it seems like the only exception i own is strawberry panic (vols 1 and 2, english) where the color illustrations don't seem to have anything to do with what actually happened in that particular volume. the b&w ones do though - they are totally typical.

no plans right now. i mean i was just thinking about this yesterday. it seems to be a non-starter, but then i don't know anything about fanfic. how common is illustrated fanfic? how common is well-illustrated fanfic?
