Hey, can you guys make it so a user's current location on the forum shows up in their profile? Would be handy, methinks.

stalker!!!

actually i never thought of this before. of course it's possible but i'll have to think through how i want to do it. if i can do it in a single query i will be oh so pleased with myself.

Still having issues with the length of time it takes to refresh a post.  Seems completely random.  Some that I've made recently have appeared within 2-3 seconds, and then earlier today, I posted, took a phone call, which the phone displayed as over seven minutes, and my post still hadn't appeared, so I had to manually refresh again.

this is really weird. it's obviously happening to you though. i can think of a way to force a reload of the page if after you send a post it hasn't appeared for say ten seconds. this would only be a kludge though because you wouldn't see posts as they were coming in from other people either. i've put in a purely speculative "fix" for this in the latest version which i haven't pushed out yet because fork and i both need to be awake and on hand when i do that. should happen in a few hours, maybe shortly after 2 pm american central time. if that doesn't fix it for you then i will put in the kludge and go back to the drawing board about comet not working in some situations.

so i know - what browser are you using (exact version)? what platform (windows xp ...)? do you have any plugins or extensions installed besides the usual (flash)? can you use gmail without any major problems? i may need to get you to record a video of you trying to post if i can't kill this.

Quote from Quietus:
Just noticed that it appears that everything under the 'unread posts' section shows as zero replies, despite there obviously being some.

the fix for this is also in the new version coming later today. well spotted though.

wiiOpera loves to go into the middle of the page

That's weird. When I loaded this page, it loaded the top first. Then it went to your post, and 5 seconds later it went to the second post of this page (Quietus one), without touching anything! And it decides to stay there (without touching anything). Looks like my wiiopera likes Quietus' post Laughing

i'm starting to sound repetitive but the fix for this should also be already done, just hasn't been applied yet. at least i definitely managed to cut down on a lot of scrolling so maybe it will stop being quite so retarded about that after i push out this new version. i can hope, right?
just pushed out a new version of taiga forum for everyone. quite a few changes this time both on the backend and the pretty end. remember to force reload to make sure you're seeing all the changes.

here's what i changed:

- clicking on the last post icon for a topic on the unread posts page takes you to the first unread post in that topic
- boards on the unread posts page should be sorted in the proper order
- replies column on the unread posts page isn't always 0
- tried to kill a scrolling bug (on receiving new posts) but i can't be sure it's gone since i can't reliably replicate it
- board mods should be sorted properly in the userlist
- put in a kludge for people not seeing new posts as they come in - no idea whether this will help but it's something to try i guess, again extremely difficult for me to test because i can't replicate it
- fixed a problem with not being able to view some users' profiles

arkarian:
- changed how attachments are displayed (should be harder to miss)
- fixed current page link colors
- fixed miikii's paging keyboard shortcuts
- lightened up miikii a bit
- fixed problems with displaying quotes and code (all styles)
- made all styles more consistent

The silly thing is that it's random.  Sometimes I can sit in a thread, and read numerous posts, including my own, appear live without issue, and then other times, it just seems like it's not going to do it at all.

In order:

Firefox 3.5.5
Vista Home Basic SP2
Minimal plugins - download status bar, and a plugin for FlashGet (download manager)
Gmail appears to be fine

Incidentally, your post above, and this one of mine appeared instantly. =)
k, let me know if you see it again now ... it really bothers me that it's doing it both on your home and work connections. bad connections will hang but are both really bad? doesn't seem likely. in any case i need to write something that can tell when the connection's hanged and reload the page so you don't have to do it.

Nah - home and work are both always-on broadband of 8 and 2 meg respectively.  Never had problems with either.  I'll keep an eye on it, and check  with IE too.

EDIT: Two other things about the 'unread' section: Is it possible to have a button that let's you ignore a topic, so that it doesn't keep showing you new replies?  And in all areas of the forum, you always have the Index link next to the 'Mark as Read' button, but you don't have it when looking at the 'Unread' replies.  I know you always have it at the top, but it just seems inconsistent.

EDIT 2: Another bug: Say I post a reply, and then want to go to the top of the page, to click on the section link to go back to it (Rules and Announcements, for example).  Well, normally to do this, I'd just click outside the box, and press Home.  At the moment, when I click outside the box, and press Home, it does it,and then jumps back to the bottom of the page again, and I have to press Home a second time for it to actually go there.  Same applies with trying to mousewheelup after you've posted.
Easy, taiga.

(Sorry, carry on.)

Please do this so I can go back to pretending the hacks boards do not exist, that'd be rad.

Seconded. Maybe the 'unread posts' page could be divided into boards/sub boards.

It already is.  Which I don't like.
Not very clearly. The sections are grouped together but not divided. I don't see it as too big an issue, to be honest.
fork, let's make that a user preference. best would be to put it at the top of unread view, perhaps in one of those arrow dropdown things like posts have - otherwise in appearance. i'm also thinking "ignore new posts from this board" should be similarly located, only in forum view.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I was thinking more of topics, as those're more likely to be of no interest to certain people.  Whole boards seems a bit overboard, but I guess having both wouldn't be so bad.
yeah, i guess the preference in forum view would affect that whole forum, but in a particular topic post view would affect only that particular topic.
One shall stand, one shall ball.

I assure you that it is not.

If the "ignore posts from here" is implemented, any more additions are just icing on the cake for me :D

Not a big deal, but when you hit "post" and then "+/- size" it just 'pastes over' the posts you were viewing prior. So for example, no matter WHAT I do, unless it's click size again, I cannot see tomatobob's post and can't see anything of yours past 'particular topic'.
It can be put on the back burner but I'd like to see similar functionality to the initial hitting of the "post" button, where it pushes the posts up.

that'll probably make it in eventually. not high enough priority to worry about immediately, and it's a lot of work.

i've already mentioned that we're definitely putting in an ignore boards/topics feature soon.
as for the index link, what you're talking about is the "forum path". it's like bread crumbs that lead you from the topic you're in, to that topic's forum, then to the index. if you're not in a board/topic, there's no need to see the path back to the index, since there is none. clicking the forum logo will always take you to the index.

not sure what you mean. how is unread view not clearly divided into boards? each board has its own thick header bar.
I didn't think it did until just now.

I feel stupid.
this is a good example of something that could probably only be resolved with eye tracking data. the idea would be to see where he was looking instead of at your headers. i also have a gut feeling that the headers are not very visible but that doesn't translate to a design suggestion. maybe one day we will be able to afford that equipment and we can set up a mobile usability lab.
If you expand the page numbers when making a post, they overlap the post field resizer.

It would also be nice to have the "last time active" part of user profiles.
can you not see last active in profiles? maybe the ability to see that is disabled for regular users right now ... thoughts?
red chamber dream
looks like we need to put it into groupscat as a permission and enable it by default.

yep, already mentioned this. going to try and fix it next version.

I can see "last active" in profiles.

And while it's not a biggie, the "hardcoded" stuff versus the "variable" data desynch in terms of spacing.
The 'last active' date is about half a capital letter lower than the actual text "Last Active".

Might just be a problem with this skin though.

Why is Acheron's name purple? it says he's in the User group.

yeah i'm seeing that too. this sort of stuff actually really bothers me (and it's weird because it shouldn't be happening). good eye.

already covered this; it's a bug. he's a hacks forum moderator and as soon as the bug is fixed his profile will reflect such.

just pushed out a quick update. changes:

- adjusted the timing of the automatic scrolling to hopefully be less annoying
- attached images are now displayed at the end of the post
- email notifications should work better (no more notifications about posts you've already seen)

please ignore any "customer forum not found" messages you may have just seen. thanks.
