The space/time beam (uncharged ice/plasma/spazer) is horribly glitchy and generally not considered for any sort of run because emulators don't accurately duplicate it. It's possible different versions of the SNES will even differ.

Ironically, there is a glitch with the x-ray scope that can do things similar to the space/time beam, I've mentioned it before but it's probably been forgotten. I never looked into it though, it requires that Samus is far, faaaaar away from where the screen is.

More interesting talk: I've checked every room in the game chronologically before the fireflea room and none would work. The fireflea room itself is pretty ideal for the glitch too - the save is right next to the route required and only 2 rooms away. There probably is another room or more later in the game but I doubt any would be faster. You need a room that has the layer 2 data saved inside the compressed room map. Which is uncommon, but not quite rare. And of course, that layer 2 data needs to have an 01 in a certain place.
Honestly I'm not big on doing things as fast as possible, I'm more interested on figuring out if things are possible at all.

Well, I know Cpadolf is. I think I may have found a problem with my theory though. I don't know fully just yet... I need to experiment more. For one, I am having trouble getting past the Metroid without getting touched by him. If he does, all the sounds die and the game glitches if you try to leave. Maybe if I save when I enter mother brains area for the first time, maybe that will help.

I don't think Cpadolf would want to do a TAS using space/time or any of its variant glitches, considering the way it breaks the game. It's hard to explain without getting very technical, but there are glitches that allow the game to be broken in fun and harmless ways, and then there are glitches which work by doing things that are, pardon the term, "illegal" for the SNES, and basically only work by corrupting things in a very bad way. Space/time is an example of the latter, and it's not really any better than just outright hacking the game, so its use in speedruns or TASes aren't really revered.

Well, that's beside the point. I am just trying to find a room with a way to MB without having to use the xray in that room in particular. You are right though, this thing messes up the game pretty badly. I can't reload the saves. I might possibly be able to find another room leading to mb after this one, but who knows?

EDIT:

Ok... I think I have this thing down completely. I don't think you can do this with the visor, but it may be possible. Well, since I don't know how the game works with the visor, did you ever go back up to see if the floor was gone? If it is, just leave. It should work. Anyway, if you use the gun, go inside the statue room, do a tap shot to the right and make sure the second one hits the door. It should slow down for a second then go to normal and you will fall to the ground. Stay on the very left line of square boxes. If you fall in the whole and get hurt, that's the right one. Just lay a PB or a normal bomb and fall into that spot. You will appear at the top within a second or so and hold left. You will fall from the ceiling. Just run to the surface and leave. Oh, and note that the energy tank is back. If you want to, to attempt to save some time, ignore Ridley and take the energy tank from here instead.

EDIT:
To bad nobody is on to reply to this. I really want to talk to someone about this considering I am in the middle of a breakthrough, IMO.

6%? When did this happen?!

EDIT: I'm probably just being dumb, but when you save in Green Brinstar, the game isn't resetting for me. Not sure what to do.

EDIT2: Nevermind, I am pretty dumb indeed.

Uh...  This happens to me too.  What do I need to do?  Embarassed

Get an Snes9x emulator version that supports the reset function.

I'll get the link

That did it.  Thanks.  extra_smug

V11.  I guess this can replace my snes9x 1.43+ v9.  8-)

Edit: That was weird...  What was done with the save stations.  :o
I like Big Butts and I can not lie
Hehe, you could go another few steps further and get v15.3
I tend to recommend http://www.bluetoaster.net/emu/rec.htm. It tends to stay up to date, and has the emulators used in TASes at tasvideos. It didn't (at the time of writing) have the new version P.Jman linked to, though, but it might be a good place to bookmark, so you don't have to ask about where to find TAS emulators later.
I think I should forget about the glitch. I doubt anyone is interested and I believe it has been done before anyway. I may look into it a little bit more.
Almost happy
Besides, if you already have all the beams and intend to finish the game quickly you could just go to the big WS lake room and use it to start the escape sequence.

Or where the ship is at the top, next to your ship. The first room you enter. I just realized that. It is all on you of course.

I have to admit, you cut the X-Ray skit while you're watching, it's only eight minutes (given that the climb is an obnoxiously long 4 minutes).

ya know, if anyone wants, i can take the vid and simply cut out most of the xray climb (using video editing, not by actually playing it) and post that vid. i'd also probably cut the door transitions and item boxes as well

That would actually be nice, as this is a def favorite run.

Well, if I ever figure another way of skipping areas, including with the wall x ray thing, if I can get some help with that. The program you guys use to get it to work. I will check all the rooms, regardless of what anyone else thinks/says, I am going to try anything and see where it gets me.

EDIT:

I would like to post again, but I know, no double posting. Well, I have been using SMILE and edited out the ceiling in mother brains room. I walk almost the same path that Cpadolf0 does in his 6% video after using the xray in there. When I jump to the spot he went to, it brings me back a room and the gfx have screwed up. No game reset. Not my point though. I died in that other room to attempt the glitch he did. When I went back to the same place, the game doesn't warp me anyplace and the game isn't frozen. I have a feeling that, regardless if the game acts the same or not, I think if I find another place like that, it may be worth checking out. I just think that using the x ray is only bringing you outside the map, along with a little something else to allow you to go to the exit. I am going to investigate more later.

Editing a post makes it show up as "new" same as adding a new post, so there's no reason to want to make a second post unless you want to add an attachment.

The technical description of exactly what's going on in is broken down here by this guy. I cannot emphasize this enough: no one knows more about Super Metroid. There are other posts he's made scattered about on this forum and in the TASvideos forum that talk more about this glitch, how he found it, how he used tools he's programmed especially to break down this glitch, etc.

I am trying to save you time here. You are almost definitely not going to find anything out that is not already known about this glitch. If you still want to keep on trying, hats off to you, but at least read everything Kejardon's said about the glitch works... you're trying to figure out something that's already been figured out, only unlike him you don't have the tools to do so.

Edit: Durh. My bad. Oh, and that link has the application Kej used to see off-screen tiles, I think.

Thanks.. I will check it later. Just letting you know, you didn't do the url right. Just in case you want to fix it, not like you don't see it anyway.

EDIT:

Well, I looked at it and I have no idea how to get the program to work. It just tells me it can't run in full screen.

I apparently lied to myself when i guessed how long it would take me to edit this. i was done 7 hours after i said i'd post it working off and on... and here it is!

Here's a LQ link http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?juwh5linmtd

By the way, the intro is from the 100% run with all the crazy controller input.
That, and my sound doesn't work right, so i only have sound on the intro in 1 small part

if there are any other vids you want me to edit i'd be more than happy

Enjoy

You must edit the video description and mention that it is JXQ's input animation in the beginning.

And thanks very much.

crap i completely forgot, thanks for reminding me. got it fixed
Could you use something like Metroid Metal to spice it up a bit instead of no sound?

that's a great idea, i forgot about metroid metal. any songs in particular you or anyone wants on there?

Hmm... I am not to sure yet... I will have to listen to some of it. I have a great idea for when you exit ceres, but just not the intro yet. In one of the songs, you can get it to sync with the explosion from ceres.

Play Crateria Surface and get the beginning to line up with Ceres' explosion. IMO it makes a great impact. I will figure out more in a min.

I just realized, you edited out the explosion. I think you should bring at least that back with the ship going towards the planet a little if you plan to use this song. It is a really good one. Also, you could always fade between Crateria and Brinstar.
