I'm actually surprised too that the new WIP turned out to be so long. But as you already noticed, disarming the Guardians just takes alot of time alone.
Quote from Quietus:
Saturn: How many more segments is this likely to be, do you think? 4? 5?
That's hard to say at this point. Maybe 4 more WIPs, yes. I would be glad to get the run down into 10 WIPs for a even number, but it will certainly be very close. Let's see if this works out.
Quote from Quietus:
This run almost makes me want to carry on with my SS attempt... ALMOST!
I'm sure a unassisted speedrun of this hack would be a great thing, so you will always be welcome to try one if you get the time. It sure will be hard as hell in SS conditions though, since there are some places that will instantly kill you if you're not careful.
Alright, time for a new WIP. Be prepared for crazy boss strategies, some interesting suitless water navigation techniques, and a totally new sequence break I found just a few weeks ago:
What...How...!? Man, I got used to see awesome stuff when you post a new WIP, but this one is really exceptional! I think, I even catched the new sequence break, but I fear I`ll never understand what you have actually done. (At least, I hope I spotted the right thing among all that awesome maneuvering)
Draygon must be seriously gutted, now that he's discovered Samus is carrying a TAS rifle.
Great work, Saturn. Favourite part: Mad bouncing just before Gravity Suit. Worst part: I think you should redo this section, as there was clearly at least one part where you didn't have a Shine Charge.
I'm pretty sure it was moving through the green gate by abusing grapple beam. Not a new trick in itself but a very nifty application for it
Yeah that was my first guess. Number two was the bouncing in the gravity suit room, Quietus already mentioned. As said, I`ll never understand, why it works. And I came to the conclusion that not asking for an explanation when it comes to Super Metroid speed tricks keeps your brain sane. ;)
Next WIP is out, with once again many little speed tricks all over the place. One of them, the "Sandfall Shinespark", is especially useful, as it allows for a pretty big, new route shortcut.
More details and further trick-info/demonstrations in the video description.
Great run, Saturn. Maridia always feels so huge when playing normally, but you made it look like a breeze.
Also, I presume you've tested, but at 10:16, would it not have been faster to charge, jump, spark right, open the gate, spark again, and then speedball into the Tourian entrance room?
Saturn is actually half robot because he/she was in some sort of accident and now has robot hands, which can play Metroid at such a speed that he/she can do all those tricks...
Well, I guess that pressing frame advance while holding other buttons doesn't require too much speed, but I understand what you mean. Looking at some sections just looks like Samus is everywhere at once.
Also, I presume you've tested, but at 10:16, would it not have been faster to charge, jump, spark right, open the gate, spark again, and then speedball into the Tourian entrance room?
Yeah, I tested that. The main problem with the spark is that you have to jump on the high platform with the gate. It doesn't allow you to use walljumps, so the only way to reach it is with a momentumful jump, or a crouch-jump. The latter isn't possible if you are in the charge mode, and to gain momentum for the jump again would cost some time. Because of that, the method I use is ~20 frames faster, and additionally allows for a important, additional Super Missile refill, while also saving some energy. :-)
I'm guessing that it doesn't quite reach, but did wonder the same thing. Or perhaps a combination? Laying a Power Bomb in the maze part, timed to destroy the first block upon approach...
Those are actually shoot blocks, not bomb blocks. And they are unfortunately immune to PBs. Shooting the first two doesn't work either, due to the morphball lock.
I had tried out a lot of those tricks in Saturn's WIP runs, and one of the only ones I actually (almost) managed was the getting to Draygon early, but when I got to the top of the sand-fall, there were event blocks in the way... Is that something that was added in the later patches of Redesign, or did you trigger some particular event that I missed somewhere? >_>
