Of course there's a chance, but it'll be a while.  I need to absorb all of the feedback from the current hack before I even plan something else.

As for learning SMILE, the best (only?) real way is trial-and-error.  There's some good info here:
http://forum.metroid2002.com/index.php/topic,6726.0.html
I particularly found Black Telomeres' FAQ helpful.  Also read the notes that come with SMILE.

The basic steps to get started with a one room hack are (details omitted - you'll figure it out):
1)Decide how large you want the room to be (max of 50 screens, I think).  I chose 10x5.
2)Fill the room with air tiles.  Draw some kind of solid border around the edges (or you'll "fall forever").  You may need to copy the tiles under the ship from a clean copy of Super Metroid so that you can stand on it.  Yes, you can copy and paste from different ROMs.
3)Draw some terrain to play around with.
4)Change all of the existing PLMs into useful items.  Drag them somewhere you can reach.
5)Edit "game behavior" and uncheck "Show Intro" to skip Ceres station and start at your ship.
6)Save the room.  Important!  Don't forget to save or all of your changes will be lost!
7)Load the ROM in your editor of choice.  Instant one room hack.
Beta 3 is up.  I'm sure someone will prove me wrong, but early Plasma and Charge should be fixed.  Ideally, only High Jump Boots and Spring Ball should be "optional" now.

Note that I'm only fixing sequence breaks; the item sequence hasn't changed since Beta 1, and probably won't change in the future.

If all goes well, the "Final" release should be very similar to this one.

Meri Kurisumasu! ^_^
You can get stuck in the super missile blocks at the space jump.

EDIT: Turns out you can get stuck in the Screw Attack area too, if you enter it too early. SMV attached.

I've changed these blocks to clearly be super missile blocks.  Now it's your own fault if you get stuck.

Fixed.

Thanks for testing!
Well, I got morph ball. Now what? D=
The only area I think the new item is in in the mockball bridge, but the passage is blocked by a bomb block.
Here is a weird way to get the speedbooster...
Almost happy
Yeah... Grappleblocks are so unreliable.

laugh new Nice.  I'm going to call it a "feature".

If there are no other known bugs, I'm going to move this to "final" in the next few days.

The final version is done.  Please see the first post for the link.  If you played one of the beta versions, there's nothing really new, just bug fixes.  If you've been waiting for the final version, here's your chance!
