"JUSTIN BAILEY ------ ------" was the famous password that allowed you to play as Samus without her armor suit in Metroid, a reward normally reserved for those who can finish the game in under three hours.

To the disappointment of many, there was no armorless Samus in Super Metroid. But this patch restores that feature- each sprite, and every graphic of Samus has been redrawn by hand to make armorless Samus playable once again.

So, five years later, I've finally gotten around to updating it. Changes include new opening graphics, completely redrawn "best ending" graphics, (The old one was rushed and looked really dumb) and little fixes and tweaks no one will notice.

And  I now give permission for anyone to use this patch for their own Super Metroid ROMhacks.

Saved! :)

Why am I wanting to hear that song by Olivia Newton-John...  Physical...?  laugh new

Edit: Ha! JUstin BaiLeY.  :P
Cool!  I remember this getting this patch when I downloaded my Super Metroid archive.  It was sitting in there for me to try out, which I did.  I really liked it before because of how well it was done.  Nice to see it's been updated, though I never saw it coming.:)
Yeah i've always enjoyed this hack, nice job.
Anyone know which hacks this can be combined with?

thanks for the new look.  New cinemas.... hooray!
I'd assume itd work with most of the full and halfhacks, as long as they don't alter anything that this patch changes, and most of them don't. It was confirmed that it worked with Golden Dawn, and someone even got it to work with Redesign by patching it after(?) applying the Redesign patch I think.
I still have no clue how you managed to pull this off. Samus' sprites are incredibly scrambled following no reasonable logic at all (unless I'm terribly wrong here).
Either way, you've done a fantastic job.
This looks nice! I am going to watch all future smvs with this patch on  =)

Movie files seem to desync in the beginning, something different in the title screen or something? Most files that start from a saved point seem to sync allright.

Poor Samus has to enter hot Norfair caves with that outfit, no matter if it is purple, red or blue.

I especially liked the shinespark sprites, best ending and.... this (picture)

Thanks for the compliments, I appreciate it.

I don't know why the movies desync, it happens when you're escaping the space station. Someone will have to make a new video using the patch.
And if you want to use this patch with another hack, patch a fresh ROM with the other hack, and then apply the JB patch on top of that. The JB patch will overwrite any changes to Samus' sprites and palettes the other hacker made. So, theoretically it should work with any other hack.

And please don't upload a JB patched hack anywhere without the other hack author's consent.

Thanks, here's some WIP pictures. Some details are in the README.

I'm not getting this to work at all. What I want to do is patch this and Control Freak to the same Super Metroid ROM, but no matter how I do it, in what order I do it, even applying this patch on its own to a (JU) [!] ROM, I get a garbled Nintendo logo and there it freezes up. Applying Control Freak on its own works perfectly on that ROM, but this one just won't.

I'm pretty sure Control Freak is for unheadered ROMs (most of Kej's stuff is) and I believe this is for headered. If your ROM has 3,072 KB, it's unheadered; if it has 3,073 KB, it's headered. Adding/removing a header isn't tough but will require use of a hex editor or SMILE (SMILE would be easier).

If you have trouble let me know, when I'm at a computer that I can download files at I can just make double patch.

Alright, SMILE confuses the shit out of me. I'd appreciate a double patch.
Asuming it is the same thing, adding or removing a header in SMILE is quite simple. All you do is load the rom in SMILE, Go to Tools > Header and select wether you want to add or remove a header.

First I had to sleep. Then I had to test this. Now we should be good. For unheadered.

Then I don't think SMILE really loaded stuff correctly for me, because all menu options were completely greyed out even when having selected the ROM in question several times.

Gonna test that patch now.

You have to open a room first before it lets you edit stuff. I don't know why that is.

Oh.

Either way, works like a charm. Thanks.

I think the options don't involve the ROM itself in general. Every option is mainly based on the room or whatever is in editing.
I love your talent in spriting and making a beautiful character.  But I have always wanted to strangle you for not making her look like samus.  I wish you made her look as she does at the end of the game / when she dies and her suit comes off

Great hack though, looks amazing now, but I still wish she was really samus

Eh-hmm. http://forum.metroid2002.com/index.php/topic,6768.0.html

Ehh-ha-ha-hmmmmm!!!

Edit:  Nooo!  Pagu Breaku!  :-&  *grief and despair*
Thats a mockup I made of Redesign, back at a time where I wanted to implement a second quest after you beat the game under 3 hours.  the idea was to see how easy it was to make samus suitless.  and reprogram the game to use different addresses to draw every sprite.... in the end it was just too tedious for a gimmick
