I have no idea what the new NBMB percent is. It will take a while now to see what can all be done.
I'm not really sure how this will affect low percent, though.

Illy found a neat trick: If you're in a wall (such as in Crocamire's room, getting rammed into the spike wall by Crocamire), you can crouch, use the x-ray to force-stand, crouch, force-stand, not unlike Metroid I's wall jump.

In fact, there is almost a way to make it *exactly* like Metroid I's wall jump. If you try to wall jump off an open door, you will trigger the room transition, and if you position it right, get stuck inside the door when it closes. Turn around so you're facing away from the door, then morph into a ball and do a crystal flash. Switch to x-ray scope and hold forward and run, and when the crystal flash ends Samus will x-ray, *not* force-crouch as would be expected (and which disables use of x-ray scope). And then from here, you can crouch and x-ray scope up as high as the wall goes. Get off at any point, or go straight through the top of the room, your choice.
For some reason, that only works when you wall jump off a door facing left, and land in a door facing right. If you try and wall jump off a door facing right and land in a door facing left, you'll be able to crystal flash still, but the door will open when the crystal flash starts. >_>

There are also other ways of getting slightly inside walls, such as freezing nest enemies a few pixels inside walls then running into the wall at a high speed.

Plasma beam before Draygon now sounds rather easy. Heck, Plasma beam in a NBMB sounds feasible. And I'm probably going to need to put up a FAQ or something on how to travel outside of rooms. >_>

and I'd like to go poking around in Super Metroid right now... but I have tests I need to study for tomorrow. >_<

Wow...

Can't wait to see a video of this! :D
I'll be back. Maybe...
Now it is time to go inside the statues' room and beat MB without beating any other bosses. If that is possible.
I tried that last night but the game crashed via the murder beam but it might work with Kaj's method...

(for you who don't know you can use the Murder Beam to do basically that thing but I don't know if it works making the room scroll...)

Oh yeah, nate do you want a tape of the tricks? It's still just sitting on the chair next to me since November.
Wow! This sounds great! and just when I am getting interested in this game.  :D
I think I'll try some of this stuff. Notice I say 'try' because I am a newbie when it comes to this game.  Laughing
Sounds interesting, to say the least. I'd love to see some  speedruns or whatever done with this new Metroid I style wall jump :)
red chamber dream
It sounds interesting indeed. I'm curious to see if anything can be done with this trick. I think I'm going to have to go play SM in a few minutes...

My sentiments exactly.  This is the kind of thing that makes SM the amazingly fantabulous game it is.

Once again Secret Worlds come into their own in the Metroid games. :D Nice find illy.

Secret Worlds RULE!

;) :P

It'll be interesting to see how high up the NBMB % will go now if this trick proves to be fruitful...

I just nabbed Plasma via this. Technically, I already killed Draygon, but I never opened the grey door to the plasma beam rooms.
However, it was around 5x harder than I expected it to be. >_> No ZMV for now, will attempt again sometime later.

I started two rooms directly left of the huge room with the grey door to the plasma beam. It has the annoying flying creatures in it. Wall jump off the door, land inside door in next room. X-ray up. Of course, x-raying up has the morph-ball trap, so if you accidently morph, you have to restart from a save.
From here, there is a normally inaccessible block in the far right side of the room. Starting from just above the top right screen, you have to travel right 9*4 = 36 screens to expose it. Then you have to be careful to hit it from the right, *NOT* the left.
Getting to the huge room with the grey door to the plasma beam rooms was a bit tricky, more so than I remember this kind of trick being. But still easily managable, nothing that can't be done with knowledge and a bit of care.
The next part was tricky, and there isn't any way to make it significantly easier. There is a *LOT* of bts data below the room that can act as doors. You have to avoid them when you fall, and worse yet, you can't even see what you're doing. I need to find an easy, reliable path for this part. A few savestates later, I managed to dodge it all and land on the first vertical repeat of the room, 16 screens below.

Next, to expose the top of the grey door in this room, so I can touch the door blocks without opening the door, I needed to travel 22*4 = 88 screens to the right, starting from directly above the door. After numerous attempts and repeatedly falling into horizontal repeats of the room and being unable to get back out, I finally just used a super jump to clear the distance. If you super jump from about just above the door to the right, with ~1530 energy (using reserve tanks to refill in mid-flight), you should land extremely close to where you want to be. Hopefully not right on top of it, though.

This is *all* underwater, though, so NBMB plasma beam doesn't look too hopeful.

From there, I finally got one bit of luck: I jumped atop the grey door, and carefully tapped right. I touched the room transitions, reappeared in the next room. I didn't touch any keys, since that's the easiest and most predictable thing to repeat. I landed on a random block which happened to put me back inside the previous room... *exactly* on top of the transition blocks inside the grey door, which then put me back inside the next room in the correct spot.
From there, it was an easy walk to the plasma beam. XD

EDIT: actually, there's no reason not to post one of my earlier attempts (I started recording this without practice, and decided to try and calculate all the paths on the fly). I wound up hitting the block from the wrong side, and got stuck in the next room.

ZSNES 1.36, sorry if it doesn't work in 1.42. >_>

sure.
Kekeke, thanks Mills.

Anyway, the really funny thing is last night at about 12am where I am, Kej was away at dinner and I had to go to sleep so I told him this trick and went to bed.  :P

Great stuff, Kej.  Funny that a few minutes after you said that getting plasma before Draygon was impossible, you do it.  Laughing

Good luck on the exams, Kej.

Pmg teh office > all!
Wow.  Shocked  That is extremely cool.  That is just about the coolest thing I have ever heard.  It is so cool, in fact, that there is only one person in the history of the universe that is cool enough to accurately convey precisely how cool this is.  I'll let him speak for me:
...

'Nuff said.  8)
...most awesome...
Welp, while Kej is busy in exam work, I managed to collect the Grappling Beam, another PB, and a missile tank in the NBMB run.  It's the items in Croc's area.  I'll make some video later.

To recap:  I've grabbed 3% more items in a NBMB now.  I'm going to chart what else can be obtained.  Stay tuned.  ^_^
I'm having a bit of trouble doing this, I just can't land in the door.  Do you actually wall jump or is it just the change of direction (on console if that matters).  Also, would someone try this up an elevator shaft and see what happens if you get inside it?  And, thanks kejardon for finding stuff this awesome out.
Just watched that movie...boy was that freaky. Especially at the part where Kejardon starts literally walking on air and jumping through walls. I was like "Heh...o_O" :D

To fredjoejimbob: I think you actually have to wall jump off the door.
It says to do it when the door is open, is there something there that you can wall jump off of, or do you do it when it's opening?
Embarrasing Fact: Power suit made by lowest bidder
No, you don't actually wall jump, but the wall jump check triggers the room transition.

Specifically, you have to move away from the blocks behind the door when you're extremely close to them, so the game would normally display the wall jump animation. The game checks for solid blocks to wall jump off, sees the transition blocks, and triggers a room transition, even though Samus moves *away* from the door.
The transition blocks are 1/2 a block (8 pixels) behind the part of the door you can open. Get as close as you can to them, do a vertical spin jump, then press away from the door.

That's what I personally find easiest, at least. You can try spin jumping toward the door, and press away at the last second, or something along those lines.

"...Kejardon starts literally walking on air and jumping through walls"
I did no such thing. It just *looked* like I did. :P
... yeah. I'm really going to have to write a FAQ about out-of-room travel. >_>
Yeah, you should.  Thanks for the advice, still haven't got it but I've got the gist of things.
