I've found an interesting thing, screenshots from beta. Since there is no beta pics of Super Metroid in sites like Metroid Database, I think, most people haven't saw them. So I post it here. Galaxar (site owner) said: "This came out of the subscriber-only version of issue 56 of Nintendo Power."

This one from early beta, possibly alpha. Rain is a different, HUD is a much different.

Next version. HUD is closer to release version, but that room is not exist in final version.
089 of Super Missiles? Glitch? Or, there was more than 99 of them in game? And what's the meaning to show "045 energy" will filled Energy Tanks? To duplicate Energy Tank's quantity? I.e., showing "Energy>510" when you have 5 Tanks and 10 energy left?

Green bubble room. Grappling beam in action

Big boss of Brinstar. Is Samus really 1.9m tall?

Only 10 programmers?!
If they're good and they do it seriously, it's possible. You should see some great amateurs games, some of them are exactly like the real games. And they're create with...ooh, one to two programmers.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
"sure to make it one of the top games of the year."

Try "all time". Very Happy
I caught that little note as well and thought the exact same thing.  laugh new
"When this statue comes to life, the challenge involves using the right weapons and move."

Wow, Torizo must have changed between the beta and the final game. Now, his room is ten times smaller and you just shoot, shoot, shoot...three minutes, boom. Dead.

The room is the same. Screenshot is a little cropped and it only showing part of the room to us. Cropped part: left row of blocks, right row of blocks and HUD. Other in-game screenshots are cropped too (green bubble room, for example)
Oh. Well, he's still a crappy mini-boss and you don't need to do anything special to beat him. You just shoot his torso until he explose.

Something about that Norfair picture. I can't put my finger on it, but isn't there a unused room in super metroid? There has to be a prototype rom & a beta rom of super metroid.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
There's a debug room, but it doesn't look like that.  I first thought the picture was of the bottom of the Norfair elevator shaft, but showing a floor with two small ramps instead of the final, flush floor (shootable).  Having thought about it, I reckon it's actually the room just above Crocomire, as you come running in from the left, which the picture shows.  The room shows that floor instead of the small two-tile platform.

From what I can see of the minimap in that shot, the map looks like it was originally different as well.

Because you had to run through the wall to break it down. Before crocomire's room in the final, the mini map is entirely different. I do agree it's the room before crocomire.

Is there anymore screenshots floating around that I can use?

I bet it should be. And enter to Tourian was originally in Brinstar, not in Crateria. In manual it placed under Charge Beam.

That's all I find after 2 days of googling. It was no youtube back in 1994... =(

I found those images a year ago. Sorry

Judging from the picture below it, the mini-map was definitely unfinished.

Also, I think that the picture with the ship is from the same build as the other ones. My guess is that they originally wanted the HUD to be rearranged after getting the missiles.

This pic right here

I like that hud. How can I change the energy to this "Energy>"
Does anyone remember a little guide NP put out (probably around release time)?  I don't have mine anymore but this made me think of it.  I think it had little explanations of different areas and a large portion of the map in it.  I think I remember it being a couple black pages with a picture of phantoon...

Umm, hang on let me look *Looks for it*
Another thing I remember. I saw a trailer on TV about SNES a long time ago. There were short demos from many games. As for Super Metroid, there was a Ceres fight scene. Samus fires to Ridley with charged shots!

I need more beta scans & mocked up images. If your wondering why, you'll see.

I remember that. I always liked how the old nintendo guides would put in additional background information on characters and areas. It added to the experience.

Another article for you =) Almost all pics are there but there are something new

Another view of ship. Closer to original. Look at rain. It's closer to original

Old Mother Brain room

Ridley fight

Hexagonal map

Another thing I'm sure of. There was auto-saving feature (like in Metroid 1). If you explore area load stations, you'll find a load point at every elevator and at areas before bosses! When you die, you'll respawn at the last visited location with load point.

Maybe, the code is still in game, who knows...
