This is my Super Metroid any% run in 30 minutes (in-game time). Items collected: 24% The sound is good XD I tried my best, used up all my skills to make this video clip ^.^ ~ RnD ~
Watching parts of it, I really couldn't tell whether it was a TAS or not. Video's tags include "speedrun", "world record", "snes", "ntsc version", so if this is for real... wow.
I would not be surprised at all if this was legit. We know for a fact that 00:30 is most definitely possible to achieve. :P I have 0 experience telling the difference between TAS and not TAS though, and I haven't even had time to watch this (except for a few parts of it) yet.
If this is legit then Forensic and Snuffit have to make sure they get 0:29 now
I'm gonna watch. This could be very interesting.
[edit] Why does the screen blur every item he collects and item.
The wave-power combo against phantoon looked rather flukey. It looked like you would have released it too early so you done a little spin jump while charging before his returning swoop to kill the correct amount of time so it hit him. To me that would be a hard thing to judge on the spare of the moment. Honestly looks like something I would have done if I was making a TAS and put a savestate during the battle and optimize as I go along so I don't mess it up. I'm not saying period this run is not legit, but this just looked curious to me. If you could elaborate on exactly what you did and your strategy on this boss then that would be great.
Entering Maridia. That was strange choice of crab to kill to get a power bomb. Do you always use this one if you have 0 PB at this point ?
You take the slower, old hotarubi route back to tourian. it's about 7 seconds slower than the way through maridia. Not just that but you did a mock ball through a one block gap in sandy brinstar. I know for a fact that is hard and worthless to try and do. But you might have just been flukey which could happen i suppose.
you skipped the big metroid. Very good going. It's much harder on NTSC and very brave trying it. One of the most hardcore tricks in the game that only the most seasoned NTSC runners will attempt.
It looks like you might have been watching some of my recent runs as I see some similarities in a few things. Like the place you activate the shinespark on the escape up the crateria shaft.
That's was a good run. As with any new alleged record attempt these days I'm curious as to it's legitimacy unless it's someone we know and have been a part of the community and watched their skills grow over time; and also because it is just so damn hard. It would be great if you could tell us about yourself, how long you've been playing, How many times you've tried this run and your feelings on this particular run.
I noticed the blurring occurs at exactly the same moment during the item collection, so that could rule out the use of savestates or something of the kind as it would need the same timing every time. So I agree it's probably to do with autofocusing.
I noticed also his run up for the pre draygon shinespark. He got Samus flashing very late and a quick initial climb in a very risky, all or nothing way. Like he knew the difficulty of it and put a savestate there and had been doing it repeatedly to get it perfect.
The first clue is the opening cutscene. If he was really doing SS attempts? Come on. But yeah it seems like there are no "mistakes" at all, just kind of slow playing. Sounds like someone using savestates to me. Hahaha and of course Phantoon's patterns are the fastest ones.
He seems a bit too good at getting Super Missile drops. That's the one thing that really stuck out at me when I was watching it, especially Maridia.
He uses all of his Super Missiles against Botwoon, likely unnecessarily, then gets one as a drop that he needed to open a green door shortly afterward. He goes on ahead, opens the door, then turns around and kills the enemy, getting a Super Missile drop that he uses to open the door to Draygon quickly. Thinking about it again and re-watching that bit, it's almost impossible to believe he'd do any of that if he didn't know he'd get a Super Missile drop right then.
072 - I don't think he did get fastest patterns against Phantoon, but nonetheless his wave power combo timing looked like a save-state had been put moments before and he did a little spin jump while charging to delay the particles release; So then all particles hit on the initial big jump at Phantoons swoop. Otherwise they would have released too early. A bit too clever on the spare of the moment me thinks, or was it a strategy he actually does all the time ?, Who knows.
And yeah I remember the opening cutscene. I mean what the hell .
TheOthin - What happened against Botwoon was he only got 2 particles to hit. So he needed 8 supers to kill botwoon. Still managed it in 1 round because Botwoon is slow. I agree the super replenishing does looks a bit suspicious but it does happen like that even for me in my runs. Botwoon is quite handy at dropping at least 1 or 2 supers. The mocktroid kill outside Draygons lair is also a possible handy super drop that I use if I have 0. I do agree it looks like it all worked out just a bit too conveniently for him in this section, since that mocktroid isn't THAT reliable for super drops.
Did anyone else notice his sloppy Draygon battle. On the last round he charged a shinespark then jumped onto the ledge and shot some missiles before activating shinespark at draygons head to kill him. Unless he actually knew draygon needed some more shots in order to die from the ensuing shinespark, this to me look exactly like savestate use and optimizing as you go along to get the job done.
Quote from 072:

And this. Which brings to mind the 100% run on the other thread had a similar "mistake-less" style run.
Honestly, with all of this in mind, one more thing I feel like we have to look at is the credibility of the person posting it. He has one other post on this site, one other Metroid video on Youtube, and both are about a Super Metroid hack, which he noted involved savestate use. This run, if performed on console, would be incredibly difficult to perform and require very precise planning and playing. I don't think I buy that a person can make a run like that while having nothing else to ask, say, or show while in the process of making it, and to have barely anything to say about the finished product.
Now, I of course don't know everything, and certainly not about people over the internet or about Super Metroid. If this person wishes to assert his skills, I recommend he give a live demonstration. Until then, I'm content to join with those dismissing this run as a TAS.
I too have thought of this after browsing his page. One thing to mention; On his you-tube page it says his country is Vietnam. Now taking that as truth there could be a small language barrier which prevents him from often posting in western sites such as this, and for all we know he could be heavily involved with a speed run community in his own country or the far east.
Indeed. How much do we really know about asian Super Metroid-players? How much contact do we have with their community, how much do we know about their progress? Didn't Hotarubi come out of the blue with his world record run?
Although I must say, if this guy just posts the video, leaves and doesn't give any rebuttal to the criticism or proving his skills somehow I guess we should consider this a fake. :( I hope it's real though, I really want to see someone reach this time (though 00:29 would be even better of course ^__^).
I believe Hotarubi was pretty unknown yeah when he posted his 32, everyone was like "who's this guy" there was a bit of an uproar because some runners were doing any% runs and getting like 36, 35 and then all of a sudden he steps in with a 32, leaving the runners feeling a bit pissed to say the least. Wasn't until later we learned he was a part of his community in Japan
I have never claimed that this run is unassisted. Did I use the word 'unassisted, no savestates, etc.' ? No.
First, take a look at my word choice. I used the words 'make this video clip' instead of 'do this run'.
I don't know how to call this run. As far as I know, available tools on emulator are rerecord, slowdown, and turbo. I decided to make a video clip with rerecording tool in real time, without slowdown/turbo. May it be called a 'real time TAS'?
For the tag 'beat world record', what I meant is that through this run, I hope to provide speedrunners with some (wild) ideas to make their runs better and better, in order to beat the current world record 0:31 by Hotarubi.
Some may call this 'not real, not legit', or even 'fake', but you have to know that I didn't claim anything. That's just because you misunderstood me.
In 1995, I watched my brother play Super Metroid on a console (PAL version). Later, I played it many times, but I know that I am just an average player. Afterwards, my SNES was out of order, so I played this game on emulator. With the help of the rerecording tool, I made this full video clip (with opening and ending scenes) and it recalls a lot of my childhood memories.
At least, I have to have some skills to make this video clip, right?
Based on Hotarubi's and Behemoth's runs, I made this video, performed most of the available tricks and added some of my ideas in it. Although I made it nearly flawless, the time was about 12-13 seconds before it hit 31. For that reason, I think that a 31 min run is hard, 30 min run is very hard, and 29 min run is impossible, but who knows.
One last thing, there are differences between Super Metroid on console and Super Metroid on emulator. The game graphic is somehow different. You have to know that I didn't try to make this video clip look like it was played on console. All I wanted to do is to make a high definition clip and reminisce about the past. If you prefer to watch a real speedrun, go to Hotarubi's youtube site or wait for another 0:30 speedrun.
Anyway, I hope that you have good time with this run. I am looking forward to watching the real 30 min run, too. It must be very exciting :)
Thank you very much for coming back here to tell us these things and clearing it all up. It's very much appreciated. I'm afraid yes it was a missunderstanding on our part, but also a small lack of details in your original post. Usually when someone posts here with a similar thread and doesn't mention emulator use, our only trail of thought is to assume it was played on console. But not to worry.
As for what's possible this game; 29 IS possible on console in an extremely good run. We ourselves have done real-time savestate only TAS's and made a time of 28:10 with absolute perfect play. It would be best if the run was segmented using the in-game save stations to get a time of 29 though
Just for clarity's sake, using any form of emulator assistance whatsoever results in a the label 'tool assistance', which is not to be confused with a TAS (Tool Assisted Speedrun, or sometimes Tool Assisted Superplay). A TAS is created using any means necessary to beat the game as quickly as possible. This is played on permanent pause, moving forward just one frame at a time to make everything perfect. 'Tool assistance' can be anything, from using a few save states, abusing constant save states to perfect room traversal, slowdown, luck manipulation, et cetera. A run on an emulator that doesn't use anything is usually considered as done under 'console conditions'. Everything else, even if you only use one save state, is tool assisted.
