Haha this game reminds me so much of starcraft ghost. And if anyone else here knows what i mean, please join me in a big LOL to those who keep asking when will it be done.
There are parts of the game that look like they would be very good, but places like the snowy area kind of need some work. I know it is really hard to make snowy areas look like something more than just a white area, but I just can't help but feel it needs work.

Other than that, the game looks pretty worth playing.

May I ask what NUB means??

Aarrgghh!!  I just found out that the Crimson Echoes hack of Chrono Trigger had gotten a cease and desist order from Square Enix not even a month from when that hack was to finally be released khaaaan khaaaan.  Because of this, the hacker(s) destroyed all the roms (any patches of the hack as well probably) of it and is putting a playthrough of it on youtube.  They were 98% finished.  Thank God I've just recently learned of the existence of youtube downloaders.  My point is, even if the admins of this site were to get cease and desist orders from Nintendo because of the ips patches being distributed, I hope these hacks in progress wouldn't get deleted or destroyed but I'd hope they'd get completed and shared via e-mail even if that would have to be done in secret.  At the very least I would hope the hackers would keep one copy of the hack for themselves.  People put too much work in hacks to just have to delete and destroy them in the end, should a cease and desist order be issued.

I still don't see how they can really be stopped.  As long as material has been distributed (demos, betas, etc) then once a final project comes out they can just claim that someone else must have finished it.  How would someone prove otherwise unless they spied on you 24/7 ?  So they can't really be forced to cease & desist, and I'd really like to see them try to sue someone for copyright infringement.  I personally think it's all a scare tactic and they know that there's not alot they can really do to stop this kind of activity.  Sure they could sue, but they would be spending alot of money to do nothing but send a message.  It would be really bad PR to screw up some nerd's life because he sat in his mom's basement and made a hack of his favorite game.  Besides, these people don't actually think that they're losing money over hacks do they?

Oh, can't wait for Aegis.  Looks awesome

Yeah, good luck arguing that in court. Releasing anything could and likely would be considered non compliance, and even if it was released before the C&D was issued Square could go after them. I wouldn't be so quick to shrug that kind of thing off, sending a C&D order in the first is already going to be viewed as a PR screw up by most so I sort of doubt they care what it would look like if they were to sue some nerd who hacked their game.

How does sending a C&D order cause bad PR in comparison with actually screwing up someone's life with a court ruling?
OMG FLAN!!!!!!!
Well considering hardly anyone here actually uses they're real names anywhere on the site, Nintendon would be spending a lot of money to find out who we are, and track us down to sue us. And what are they gonna get out of it?

Nintendo probably already knows what we are doing to the game, chances are they just dont care. They're not losing money, since the game has probably not made money for 10 years, and by us making the game different and distributing patches around, we make the series more popular, and thus more people start to buy the later Metroid games.

Though if we did get a C&D, i certainly would not give up on my hack, I'd just work on it in secret, and release it later via youtube under another name or something. Once it's out, they cant stop it.
It is patently obvious that Nintendo doesn't care about hacks and fan-games based on it's 8 and 16-bit franchises.  If they did, someone would have heard from them by now.  The cow is way too far out of the barn at this point.  Square is a much smaller company than the Big N and may be more protective of it's intellectual property.

The fact is, Nintendo doesn't make money off of Super Metroid anymore, hasn't for over a decade, and if something isn't costing them $$, they don't care.  They make a little off of the Virtual Console, but, if anything, having hacks and fan games keeps the original game visible and out there and probably increases it's profile.

There are probably hundreds of thousands of SM Roms on PC's throughout the world.  Thousands of people have downloaded IPS patches for those Roms.  There is nothing they could do at this point.

Did you people forget about VC all of sudden?

Edit: Donny, even if people download ROMs people still buy the games. No matter what the numbers are you can't ignore the fact that they sell.

I've got done reading some threads related to the issue with Crimson Echoes.  Truly eye opening, interesting, informative, and sobering stuff here.  I, for one, am angry at Square Enix for doing this (cease and desist).  They're legally able to do this I suppose but wrong in my opinion (yes, I know my opinion doesn't make any difference here) and the timing couldn't have been worse.  I now look at other companies and see they turn a blind eye at hacks and fangames and after this, I can no longer take hacks and fangames for granted.  I can't even take a person/team's freedom for announcing a project before release for granted anymore.  Right about now, I have far more respect for Nintendo than I do for Square Enix.  Long live Nintendo.  Don't take our freedoms for modding roms/creating fangames from scratch for granted.  Sadly, not every video game company is appreciative or even turns a blind eye on such things these days....  I have a whole new appreciation for hacks and fangames now.

About if a leak came out after the cease and desist order??  The team behind Crimson Echoes would be sued a minimum of $150,000.  Probably even if it was by a completely anonymous random person.  Oh, and Square Enix actually has figured out enough real-life info. behind the hacking team to actually bring them to court.  Actually, there has been a leak of the alpha version before beta testing even started months before the cease and desist order.  Lot's of errors and game stoppers in it, and not all the text is there, among other things.  I think I even found a link to it.  And it's in rom form.  I'll be grateful for what little I've got and hope to God that team doesn't see reprecussions because of this.  If anyone asks for the link to it, publicly or privately, I'll completely ignore you out of respect for the team of that hack.  I was really looking forward to playing you, Crimson Echoes.

To the moderators of this forum:  I thank you for bearing with me even as I derailed this thread.  And I also thank you for letting me offer my condolences to a hack that has nothing to do with the Metroid series whatsoever and understanding the pain I'm going through knowing it'll never be released and such.  Thank you for bearing with me and understanding.

Acheron86, I don't know where you are in Aegis, but please hack the heck out of it.  I'm rooting for you all the way!!

P.S.  I'm also rooting for everyone else here and most importantly, don't take any of this stuff for granted and have lots of fun!!

If nintendo hasn't shut down smwcentral by now I doubt they care about these hacking programs.

Hows is progress on Aegis?

I can't wait, I know it will be one of the best hacks on this site. :)

I agree, Nintendo has my respect.  It's an up hill battle for Chrono fans though because Square Enix doesn't look the other way, they close down fan projects, sadly.

When looking for Super Metroid related hacks I eventually ran across a link that actually led me here, to this very thread.  I read the whole thing before I joined, so yeah, this is the hack that got me here and I've been looking forward to it ever since.  As I read it before registering, I was hoping it was released but found it's still being worked on.  Not sure how progress is on Aegis is but I hope Acheron86 is hacking the heck out of it and having fun in the whole process of it, no matter how long it takes.

Once released, there should be a contest to see who can have the slowest time beating ( laugh new) it in the first playthrough.  I mean in-game time, that is....  I would accept any challengers (Care for another round Bioniclegenius??  Or anyone else??) (Hmm, would a deadline be required or no, from start to finish??).  I will not be the one with the fastest time beating it, even if I could be.  I'll savor it.

Tomorrow I have two more exams. After that I will have a summer's worth of free time. (I am taking two online classes, but those should be cake compared to what I've been up to lately.)

Even with school as busy as it's been, I've been hacking away slowly. I have more to show but I don't want to show it because I like surprises.

I'm actually taking a second summer semester now, but I have more free time than I did before.

Subverda is done. Most of the work now is programming and bug fixes. I will be tackling music very soon.
So essentially, the level design is like 99% done.  Sweet.

Acheron, you said you also modify the music. How do you do that? That seems as lots of fun.
If it's ASM, that would be enough as an explanation as I don't know that (yet?).

That's just AWESOME!

How much will take for ''tackle'' the music?

I'm not sure how long music will take. I would not expect it to be long; I have a pretty solid understanding of the structure (much thanks to help from MoN and Kejardon).

Hacking music is... hard to explain. You definitely need to have a rudimentary understanding of ASM. I basically have to turn any music I want to use into sheet music (easy, since I'm writing it from scratch anyway), then turn those notes into a language Super Metroid can understand. I recommend perusing Kejardon's documentation and his "Kraid's Hideout" patch. Importing instruments is more complicated and I still have to mess with that some more; it may or may not actually be something I need to do, and to be honest I've been putting that part off until level design is complete.

Ok, then I'll wait for someone to develop a tool for that =) hopefully SMILE will have a composer in the future.
OMG FLAN!!!!!!!
Hacking in new music isn't actually that hard at all as I discovered last night. I got a perfectly good sounding circus theme into the game (the one from Lemmings 2 Tribes on Snes), and even did a circusy type room complete with GFX to accompany it.

And I did all that from scratch in about 4 hours with no understanding of how the music worked...
