Edit: 40 tricks recorded so far (7 since I submitted the zip file)

I'm going to be starting a new game and recording all the speed tricks I found in the 63 page topic, minus stuff that's on m2k2, that I remember from craz/xade's run, or I have a video of in a folder I keep. These tricks will be submitted to the m2k2 page so that it finally has a speed tricks section, not only because it's the only metroid game to be missing one (afaik), but to encourage runners by having a quick resource to find all they need versus digging through forums. A lot of work would be saved if xade and logitech submit their tricks, though I'm not depending on it or anything. And on a random note, this could also lead to an update to the wiki speed tricks section, which isn't very thorough IMO.

Warning: wall-o-text coming, I copy-pasted 23 pages of text from the super topic, and am editing it down to nothing as I perform + record the described tricks.

-----

Bryyo hangar bay

(one time-only)

----

Gel refinery ghetto jump

(super hard, can't get it yet)

----

Early mission expansion

in Security Station in the overhead pipe. Just Ghetto jump at it sideways using the small doorway projection and morph at the top. Sadly you cant get any higher than this if you follow the path backwards, unless someone can do something other than the tricks we know of currently.

(does this work?)

----

Don't feel like making a vid, but you can skip the Reptilicus Hunter fight in Grand Court by triggering the fight then BSJing back to the door, dumping the room, and coming back (the fight won't trigger a second time). I don't know whether the time saved from skipping the fight outweighs the time lost in skipping it, though.

(one-time only, doesn't seem to have time benefit even on hyper)

-----

Hey kip!  The jump is a bit tricky, I was luck to actually get it on my second try from when I started recording.  in the video you'll see me walk from the far side of the room, you don't need to do this, but it helps light up the enemy.  they like to run and stop within your view, which is why I look as close to the wall on the right as possible.

you'll also see that I'm  going back and forth on the small slope of cie to make sure I'm in the right place, you want to be standing just before the slope starts.  once the reptilicus hits you with the whip, just press jump and JAM backward while holding Z.  this allows you to move while wasily controling your facing direction.  you need to pull backward so you don't hit your head on the icicle which continues up the right side of the wall.

(ghetto jump in gel refinery advice)

Kip, I looked at my video a bit closer and realized the jump that made it had me standing on the ice!

So, the slope IS the ice itself, walk around all over that I ce base to get a feel for where the biggest thrust point will be.

as for the pushback, you'll want to hold Z the entire time. and hit jump the instant you get the pushback, but the space jump mus be well timmed.  you also need to hold down on the stick until the space jump, then push forward and to the right like in my vid.

The whip is funny.  sometimes its a TON of thrust, sometimes its none.  I find that actually moving at the time of the impact samus gets less speed, its best to stand still.  pirates give the best thrust by far as all you need to do is walk into them and get slammed back a good distance.

(more gj advice in gel)

----
Hall of the Golems missle expansion speed trick.  About 2 or 3 seconds faster than dphanna's method.  After this, do everything dphanna did in his vid.

(Logitech. He took his down, though dphanna's trick is VERY hard to pull off, since it's like 5 tricks in one).

----

Zipline station delta

Scan the far away door, then use scan jump + SA to skip 2 platforms.

(can't get it yet)

----

SW10 + implications (1HKO on Rundas, for instance)

----

Elysia grapple trick (don't lower one of the grapple blocking thingies, in craz's run. Also one-time deal)

----

Gateway rolling jumps + scan dashes

---

norion tricks, such as ridley skip (possibly one-timer)

Docking Bay Access spring sj

http://files.filefront.com/dockingbayaccessspeedtrickmp4/;10698563;/fileinfo.html

Only part that bugged me was the little hop before the spring sj, and the door on the top already being grey. Not sure what to put as text, the trick's pretty trivial. The only tricky bit is aligning the camera behind you.

Ghor scan skip

http://files.filefront.com/securitystationspeedtrickmp4/;10698872;/fileinfo.html

Weird camera angle on the way back. Very easy to pull off too, you just roll until you stop hearing talking and immediately come back.

I only have 1 save slot to work with, so I'll move on if there's no complaints.

I don't like waiting 2 days without response, do you guys want a speed tricks section or not? I'm trying to take the best initiative I can, but this is just sad...

Also, things would go a lot faster if people submitted videos of their tricks here instead of me reproducing them all (though the later sure makes for good practice) and giving appropriate credit.
It's good that someone is doing it for the site. Hopefully these vids are decent quality (dvd recorder).
looks like you fixed the aspect ratio thing ... vids look good.

also just because there is no interest in prime 3 today does not mean there will be none in the future. m2k2 is forever.

Repair Bay A speed trick. I don't do it quite as fast as tjp, but all I could sanely muster up.

http://files.filefront.com/repairbayaspeedtrickmp4/;10734874;/fileinfo.html

Comments would go something like this:

"Once you enter Repair Bay A, stand on the box nearest to you. Double jump up to the next platform and bs jump to the highest platform. The bs jump timing is especially tricky. Unmorph as late as you can for added height, and hold the joystick up the entire duration of the first jump until you reach your very peak, then hold back on your second jump."

Feel free to re-word that if you will. I will also add a lot more tomorrow hopefully.
Bananas GOOD, Kremlings BAD
It wasn't THAT slow.

The description about the double jump needs to be modified, because you have to stand at the very edge of the box so you don't hit your head on the platform above you.

Just made a filefront account, so that'll keep all the tricks neatly in one place instead of having links all over the place in several posts.

http://hosted.filefront.com/cornycereal/

Added the Gateway speed trick, and I'll be adding tricks out of chronological game order since using later saves forces you to skip recording one-time tricks.

Edit: I think I just found my first independent speed trick.

I've been looking at your uploaded videos.  I think you need to coordinate with Nate or whoever is going to accept them to make sure they:  A) show enough, and B) follow the format on the metroid2002.com page.

As for your speed trick, you have to think about where you'll be in that room during a speedrun (any% and 100%) and when you'll have screw attack.  I am not familiar with the routes, so that's all the input I can give.
That Gateway trick was posted somewhere a while ago IIRC. It can be done without Screw Attack as well.
I might have to re-record Gateway w/o screw attack then (even if it's a lot more impractical IMO). Also need someone to comment on my generator hall north speed trick recording, not sure if that's optimal (ghetto jump somewhere, maybe?)
I don't think making sure you do everything optimally is a big deal. Remember these videos should clearly demonstrate how the trick is performed, not what it would look like in a speed run. It looked like you started recording a bit late, other than that that vid looked fine.

vykan12: 2008-06-22 03:12:43 pm
Up to 18 tricks and counting recorded. I also edited the spoiler tag stuff a lot, and it's down to about half its original size. Again, if you see anything repeated/useless/doesn't work/etc, tell me and I'll remove it from the wall 'o text.
Sorry for the double post, but this is surely a new trick, as I've seen no mention of fuel gel pool anywhere:

http://files.filefront.com/fuelgelpoolspeedtrickmp4/;10746923;/fileinfo.html

Might be possible to 2bj bs jump + SA from the first ice lake to save even more time.
That doesn't really seem like it saves any time, and if it does it's very little.
Edit history:
vykan12: 2008-06-23 06:03:40 am
Well the normal path starting from the second ice lake would be up-right then up-left, whereas this pretty much goes straight at the seemingly smaller expense of morphing + spring jumping. It's also very easy to do, even if it only saves a second or two.

Finished recording all of logitech's tricks, except for this one:

Has anyone pulled this one off? It's pure evil, and I just can't get it after close to an hour of trying.

Also, my gateway speed trick for 100% runs is different from the one I found in the supertopic (unlike what xade thought)

I'm pretty sure my way is faster because it uses a lower platform thus you waste less time climbing.

Finally, I'm not sure if this (edit: logitech) trick saves time, and it seems pretty hard to execute, so I'm wondering if it's worth the effort:

Seems likely to be left out, considering there's about 5 tricks to perform in the first bryyo segment.

EDIT: Spoiler tag's been removed, since I've narrowed down the remaining tricks quite significantly.

EDIT2: I'm really uncertain if this transit hub trick is actually faster:

http://files.filefront.com/transithubspeedtrickmp4/;10756988;/fileinfo.html

I tried timing it with a stopwatch but both were extremely close, so I guess the cooler way prevails :P
Sorry for double.

This might be new, dunno if it's faster than the ghetto jump in gel refinery.

http://files.filefront.com/gelrefinerysitespeedtrick2mp4/;10760799;/fileinfo.html

I'll upload the ghetto anyway, since the site likes having multiple methods of doing things.
Don't remember seeing that before... definitely looks faster than the ghetto though, good job.
Bananas GOOD, Kremlings BAD
That "tjp" trick isn't mine.  The trick I was talking about included a scan-dash to that platform.  If you dig in the forum, Paraxade shows a scan-dash as well.  My version just uses the debris blocking the platform instead.  I'll get the video done sometime today.
I'll submit the tricks I've recorded right now (33 in total) because I'm stuck between ridley skip (one-timer, almost got it) and hangar bay speed trick (2 tricks in one, can't get either), so all my save slots are used up. Moreover, I'll probably take a short break to do other things to profit from the summertime, and there's no harm in adding tricks in multiple stages instead of all at once.

That being said, I still have to write up a description for each trick, put them as .txt documents and zip everything with the video files, so I might still have my hands full today. I'll copy paste the descriptions here as soon as they're done to see if there's any conflicts/disagreements about anything.
Edit history:
vykan12: 2008-06-23 08:33:11 pm
And here it is. All that's left to do is submit all this to Nate via a zip file, assuming my text descriptions aren't horrible >_>.

Arrival Station

http://files.filefront.com/arrivalstationspeedtrickmp4/;10754913;/fileinfo.html

“When entering to Arrival Station from Hub Access simply boost straight and terminal fall. You’ll be warped near the door leading to Zipline Station Alpha.”

Botanica

http://files.filefront.com/botanicaspeedtrickmp4/;10754744;/fileinfo.html

“Use a series of spring sjs to acquire the botanica missile expansion without pulling out any crates with the grapple swing. In both cases, the spring sjs require a screw attack for added horizontal distance.”

Cliffside Airdock

http://files.filefront.com/cliffsideairdockspeedtrickmp4/;10741185;/fileinfo.html

“While approaching Samus’ ship, do a terminal fall to either side of the bridge and you’ll be warped within very close distance of Samus’ ship.

Notes: It seems the probability of the terminal fall working increases if you hit one of the poles under the bridge.”

Command Courtyard

http://files.filefront.com/commandcourtyardspeedtrickmp4/;10741562;/fileinfo.html

“Position a morphed Samus as shown in the video. Do a spring bomb sj followed by a screw attack to get to the upper ledge without having done the entire morph ball tunnel maze.”

Concourse

http://files.filefront.com/concoursespeedtrickmp4/;10742353;/fileinfo.html

“A spring sj allows you to skip having to ride an elevator to the second tier of the room.”

Defence Access

http://files.filefront.com/defenceaccessspeedtrickmp4/;10749317;/fileinfo.html

“While advancing up the first part of the spider ball track, just as you start to turn right, boost off the track. If you time removing and pressing the Z button correctly, you’ll have skipped a fair chunk of the spider track”.

Docking Bay Access

http://files.filefront.com/defenceaccessspeedtrickmp4/;10749317;/fileinfo.html

“Spring sj-ing up to the higher platform saves you the effort of shooting 2 targets to lower a ramp.”

Fuel Gel Pool

http://files.filefront.com/fuelgelpoolspeedtrickmp4/;10746923;/fileinfo.html

“Upon freezing all 3 lava lakes, climb up to the second lava lake, then perform a spring sj followed by a screw attack to get to the expansion.”

Gateway 1

http://files.filefront.com/gatewayspeedtrickmp4/;10740516;/fileinfo.html

“Spring sj from the spot used in the video to skip part of the morph ball puzzle in Gateway.

Notes: It is imperative that you un-morph as early as possible in the spring sj execution because you want to avoid hitting your head on the green orb obstacle above.”

Gateway 2

http://files.filefront.com/gatewayspeedtrick2mp4/;10740928;/fileinfo.html

“Simply spring sj then screw attack from the inclined platform shown in the video. This is the fastest route to both the Gateway missile expansion and a nearby energy tank.

Notes: It is possible to not need a screw attack if you angle yourself more to the left before morphing. However, this ensures that failed attempts result in terminal falls, and is harder to execute.”

Gel Processing Site

http://files.filefront.com/gelprocessingsitespeedtrikmp4/;10762063;/fileinfo.html

“Position a morphed Samus on the bottom-right corner of the rectangular platform shown in the video. Adjust the camera angle with Z such that Samus is facing diagonal-right. Perform a rolling spring sj onto the leftmost platform, then spring sj onto the green ledge.

Notes: The timing of this trick is very precise, so I suggest you try and imitate the method in the video as best as you can. As for the spring sj, make sure to hold left or right to grab onto the green ledge, otherwise you won’t have enough height to make it up the next platform.”

Gel Refinery Site 1

http://files.filefront.com/gelrefinerysitespeedtrickmp4/;10744018;/fileinfo.html

“Spring sj off the side wall for a quick missile expansion.”

Gel Refinery Site 2 + 3 + (missing ghetto 4)

http://files.filefront.com/gelrefinerysitespeedtrick2mp4/;10760799;/fileinfo.html

http://files.filefront.com/gelrefinerysitespeedtrick3mp4/;10760983;/fileinfo.html

“Perform a rolling spring sj off the right wall to get to the door without having raised the right platform. Alternatively, you can simply do 2 space jumps as shown in the second video.”

Generator C

http://files.filefront.com/generatorcspeedtrickmp4/;10760065;/fileinfo.html

“After having pulled the lever, terminal fall into the only pit in the room to warp to the other side.”

Generator Hall North

http://files.filefront.com/generatorhallnorthspeedtrkmp4/;10744751;/fileinfo.html

“Using 2 spring sjs, you can pass over the un-lowered bridge and access the pump which opens the path to the missile expansion.”

Hall of Remembrance

http://files.filefront.com/hallofremembrancespeedtrikmp4/;10747241;/fileinfo.html

“A straightforward screw attack can get you to the ship missile expansion without having lowered the ‘arm’ platform.”

Hoverplat Docking Site 1

http://files.filefront.com/hoverplatdockingsitespeedkmp4/;10743385;/fileinfo.html

“A precise screw attack can allow you to skip a platform. Trick works in both the initial and reverse path through the area.”
Hoverplat Docking Site 2

http://files.filefront.com/hoverplatdockingsitespeed2mp4/;10743855;/fileinfo.html

“While climbing the spider track, when you reach about 1/3 of the way up the arch, boost off and re-press Z at the right time for your first timesaver. When you’ve reached a dead end on the new track, stop for a split second while still holding up and b, then boost off the track. If done correctly, you’ll collide with the left track, and be able to just barely land on to the final track.”

Landing Site A

http://files.filefront.com/landingsiteaspeedtrickmp4/;10741700;/fileinfo.html

“A rolling spring sj lets you skip the mini-elevator ride up to the next door.”

Maintenance Shaft CC

http://files.filefront.com/maintenanceshaftccspeedtrkmp4/;10742213;/fileinfo.html

“Perform a space jump such that you end up aligned with the other side of the chasm and are under all the metal obstructions blocking your path. Then simply screw attack across to save having to go into the morph ball tunnel.

Notes: This trick is very difficult to execute, and might not even save time, thus it’s unlikely to even be included in a segmented speedrun.”

Metroid Hatcher

http://files.filefront.com/metroidhatcherspeedtrickmp4/;10754332;/fileinfo.html

“Metroid Hatcher minibosses can be 1 hit killed by locking onto them and shooting with the x-ray equipped. Requires the nova beam to work.”

Metroid Processing Site

http://files.filefront.com/metroidprocessingspeedtrikmp4/;10741801;/fileinfo.html

“Spring sj off the side wall to land on the platform above. Allows you to skip acquiring an energy cell.”

Pirate Research

http://files.filefront.com/pirateresearchspeedtrickmp4/;10757450;/fileinfo.html

“A total of 3 spring sjs can help you climb up this room, skipping the same number of platforms.”

Powerworks 1

http://files.filefront.com/powerworksspeedtrickmp4/;10748686;/fileinfo.html

“After having vertically climbed the spider track shown in the video, move a little to the left, then back right and immediately boost off the track. Press Z at the right moment and proceed to the ship missile expansion.”

Powerworks 2+3

http://files.filefront.com/powerworksspeedtrick2mp4/;10748880;/fileinfo.html

http://files.filefront.com/powerworksspeedtrick3mp4/;10748920;/fileinfo.html

“When you first enter the spider ball track, move as far to the right as possible without holding Z, and spring jump over the railing. Once you’ve fallen far enough, hold Z again to skip a fair chunk of the spider track puzzle. Later on, move up the diagonal-left part of the spider track as normal, but let go of Z at the end, catching the nearest track on your descent.

The second video shows a spring sj you can do to skip 2 parts of the track near the end of the puzzle.”

Repair Bay

http://files.filefront.com/repairbayspeedtrickmp4/;10745003;/fileinfo.html

“After having opened the gate, head for the box to your right and make a simple space jump to the next platform. Then, from the left edge of the platform you just landed on, perform a spring sj onto the platform above you.”

Repair Bay A

http://files.filefront.com/repairbayaspeedtrickmp4/;10740527;/fileinfo.html

“Upon entering the room, jump on the rightmost box, and stand on its edge. Make a careful space jump to the platform above. You’ll land on the outside of a thin railing, so you’ll need an additional jump backwards to get onto the main part of the platform. Proceed right, and do a spring sj as shown in the video to get onto the highest platform.

Notes: The spring sj timing is fairly difficult. Put an emphasis on morphing early, holding up on the first jump and holding back on the second jump, as well as maximizing the height attained from both jumps.”
Scrapvault

http://files.filefront.com/scrapvaultspeedtrickmp4/;10741364;/fileinfo.html

“Upon entering the room, spring sj and screw attack from the right wall onto the platform shown in the video.”

Security Station

http://files.filefront.com/securitystationspeedtrickmp4/;10740533;/fileinfo.html

“While in morph ball, enter the room where Ghor is being scanned, and immediately leave. Roll out as far as you can until you can no longer hear anyone speaking, then return to the door you previously entered to skip the majority of Ghor’s scanning.”

Skybridge Hera

http://files.filefront.com/skybridgeheraspeedtrickmp4/;10748460;/fileinfo.html

“It is faster to screw attack across the chasm instead of activating and using the orb cannon.”

Transit Hub

http://files.filefront.com/transithubspeedtrickmp4/;10756988;/fileinfo.html

“A precise space jump allows you to skip the morph ball tunnel.

Notes: As you see in the beginning of the video, a minor timesaver is also gained from using a boost spring jump off of one of the small platforms.”

"do a terminal fall" sounds a bit odd, should probably be reworded to "drop into the terminal fall".

I still have doubts as to whether that's actually faster.

It's really not hard to execute at all actually. You don't need to angle yourself to the left, just get on the platform higher up.

It's possible to make it up to the top track when you boost at the end, not just the one below it. Also, the second trick only skips one part of the track.

It's also possible to get straight onto the platform above you from the ssj (with an extra screw attack possibly being needed), or jump onto the ledge to the left then onto the platform that was above you.

Quote:
Notes: The spring sj timing is fairly difficult. Put an emphasis on morphing early, holding up on the first jump and holding back on the second jump, as well as maximizing the height attained from both jumps.”

The way I used to do the SSJ is to try to morph close to the edge, and when springing move back as little as possible.

Scrapvault

If you roll over to the wall below the platform first, then you don't need the screw attack.
