Taken from the Planetgamecube.com interview:

Quote from PlanetGamecube:
PGC: During the presentation, [Richard Verodi] said that the length of the game is maybe just a little bit shorter than the first Metroid Prime. What kinds of incentives are there for replaying the game – bonuses or harder difficulties, etc.?

Abe: It's pretty standard in terms of what you would expect from a Metroid game, having an unlock system to encourage people to go back through and play the game. But at the same time, just doing a speed run is going to be a lot of fun for people, and I think that people will enjoy the challenge of trying to beat it faster than everyone else.

Reed: There's a couple of other things. When you finish the game, we do actually show the time that you took to get through the game. Also, we keep track of the total enemies killed through the whole life of the game. So each time you play, it keeps adding up and adding up and adding up, and I'm sure there's gonna be forums where there's like, "Ah, I got a million kills. I got two million kills." (laughter) There's all that online competition that I think that will be going on. It's always interesting to see what ways people find to play your game.

It's very refreshing to see a developer acknowledge one of the bigger fan aspects of the series. They've obviously been to SCU and to M2k2 a few times then! ;)

Thanks to Barryh on the SCU forums for pointing it out. :D

strange that the smart tags didn't affect the scu's in your post. good news, though ... of course, they make it so hard to record the ds that i'm not sure we're in heaven just yet.

Then may I suggest using a DS Lite in a dark room to record a MUCH better picture from a decent digital camera/camcorder?

Perhaps do what they do in the movie piracy scene and take the audio direct from the DS to the Line in on the PC to give direct audio quality at least (cuts out all background noise - such as my swearing!)
I wrote an eMail to Nintendo of Europe some time ago, and they answered:
"We are sorry, but the device you are searching for is not for public use".

I asked for a device which recordes directly from the DS or send a signal to your PC. But nope, you will not get it from Nintendo, that's for sure.

But is there no other way to record from the DS? A third party device or anything other? Cause that's really lame, recording with an Camcorder.  Rolling Eyes
i think we might see something for the revolution. they're probably waiting till then to maximize the rev's desirability for ds owners. und willkommen im forum. :)

hmm i wonder why there isn't a DS2TV adapter like the GBA2TV adapter that came out befor ethe Game Boy Player....

One must take into account that the number of people who wish to record their games being played is very, very small when compared to the general gaming population. But it is growing.
Look, witty text!
I'm sure someone will figure out a way to pull it off eventually, though.  I mean, if they can make a Linux OS for the DS, then video capture can't be too hard to pull off.
good job equating software and hardware there.
I hope that a third-party company or even Nintendo itself will release such a device. If Nintendo-Revolution would support the DS like GameCube the GBA then it would be also a nice thingy. But you know... just dreams...  Rolling Eyes

Dankeschön. Endlich bin ich auch ein Teil von M2K2  :D
Just to give some sort of impression of what quality is possible with the current DS design, I've recorded several live mario kart videos using my digital camera. Sound quality can be enhanced greatly if you use a direct line to your PC, but it's something I can do without for these types of things.

The improved viewing angle of the DS lite should enhance the quality, but having a decent lighting solution works well enough with the current Ds.

Saber is so weird. But correct.

carlmmii, that quality is pretty damn good, I'd say. And the camera never moves, so it's almost as good as, say, a GBP vid.

Wow, besides that video quality being very watchable, you are great at mariokart. Its not right that someone is that good at the game...

Half of getting Linux to run on the DS is hardware-related, though; you have to not only get the program onto the DS, but drivers have to be written so that the program can use all the various input and output devices.

do you need to open the DS and solder it to use Linux? :p
PAGE BREAKER
Ready and willing.
Silly Goose: But... that's to get it to interface with existing hardware, right? If so, there's a big difference between that and a whole new form of output hardware.
Look, witty text!
The GBA Movie Player would be an example of currently available hardware that can be used with the DS.  Another would be the PassMe, which has a number of variations.

One can get software into the DS easily enough...  And although I'd be the last to say I'm an expert in this stuff, I imagine it thusly comes down to finding a way to get a program to work that'd intercept the display data, send a copy to a flash card or something, and do it while a game is being played...  Which is no small feat, but one never knows what someone with a little ingenuity and a lot of spare time might do.
I've been wondering for a little while now whether it might be worth publishing plans for constructing some sort of sda-approved clamp or stand or rig that would hold both DS and camera. Or perhaps you could find something available commercially that would do the job - probably something intended for a completely different purpose. In my mind I see something built on a wooden frame with slotted sections that can be moved about and then made fast with the aid of wing-nuts.

I reckon hacking the hardware is still on too for anyone who has an oscilloscope, a head for reverse engineering, a steady hand, a magnifying glass, and one of those annoying three-bladed nintendo screwdrivers. I'd go for it, but I have no clue what the interface between an LCD screen and its driver electronics is like these days - hell, I don't even know if it's analogue or digital or a combination of both. And I don't know how I'd get it open short of using a drill.
