One shall stand, one shall ball.
I expect in this case his attack naturally carries further right as he as he steps into the attack so you rolling left probably takes you past the attack's active frames while going right takes you kind of in line with his attack lets him rotate toward you a bit more.

Generally speaking it's best to dodge towards enemies with polearms like spears or halberds unless they are specifically sweeping it horizontally, thrusts and vertical chops track a little better so rolling forward and ideally past the enemy will serve you better.

They said a heavy weapon can do it in 4 hits, but is there a heavy weapon in existence that can be swung four times in that short window?  I don't even think I have enough stamina to swing a heavy weapon 4 times.

I'll say it's more possible now than it was back before the reduced the stamina costs of Ultra Weapons. :v
I did end up beating him, but I was never ever to do a critical hit on him.  I just chipped away at him forever, but never saw his guard broken.  Thank goodness for yellow bug pellets.

Right now I'm just dying over and over trying to get past the ghost archers at the beginning of ringed city.  I can find two safe spots, but beyond that I can't find any cover and am unable to block or dodge the volleys.  I tried about a dozen times and now I'm sitting at my PC to cheat and find the answer ;P

When you're out of their line of sight, they start to turn into other directions, giving you opportunity to run ahead without getting fired at
One shall stand, one shall ball.
I go along the right side of the path, after the second or third(?) safe spot there's a place you can drop down on the right. You'll be clear for a good bit.

This is the way I saw online.

I found the bonfire past there, and right now I'm deep in Ringed City trying to find the next bonfire.  I got Wolf Ring +3, White priest head, talked to the girl who wants me to kill the dragon. I hope it's not much further than the swampy area where the priest head was because I end up using all my estus on the stairs right before there on those big fat guys with the large blades.  I've also run into a couple of creatures who look like the white priest head.  They just tell my something about embracing the darkness and enjoying the feast.  I thought if I put the priest head on, maybe they would say something different?  I guess the priest head is kind of useless.

This city is really quite gorgeous.  So far it seems like this DLC is much bigger and better than the first one.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Remember, the fat guys are super weak to plunging attacks! Exploit this at every opportunity!

There is a bonfire in the swampy area, head to the right from the stairs.

I did a plunging attack on them twice in dreg heap and it didn't seem to do shit, so I never bothered again.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
If you get it right there's a special animation. If that didn't happen you were a little off.

That stairway made me really good at aiming them. :v
I see what you mean now, I did finally get it right.  But I'm dying much easier this way because it's very hard to pull off.  There's only one I can hit from the first bridge while the other two just follow me up onto the bridge and never go back under it.  The ones under the second bridge are even harder because you can't see them until it's too late, and if you miss then the damage from the fall is fatal if you don't have full health.  It's much safer and easier to pick them off one at a time by luring them away and fighting them normally.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Weird, they always just walked back to their patrol route when I ran across the bridge. I could stab one, run back up and across the bridge and if one followed he'd stop and turn back then I'd just repeat. It wasn't fast but it was pretty fun to do.
I found the bonfire past there.  Got birch bow, some magic shiv thingy, old iron dragonslayer set, the black witch veil, preacher right arm.  Saw dragon.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Say hi to dragon for me.
I'll try. He seemed kinda grouchy.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
He is the Grumpiest Gus, please give him a hug.
He's probably just horny.

aw man for a second I thought I found the Black With Domino Mask, but it's a stupid blindfold mask.  I tried so hard to get the domino mask in DS2.  I think it's the hardest item to get in the whole series.

I did the humanity puzzle.  I saw that area earlier and tried so hard to get to it.  And the twist with Lapp totally took me off guard.  Nice!
If you want to see all of Shira's dialogue, make sure to give the highest priority to the tasks she sets you and return to her immediately when you complete them
She told me to go kill the dragon.  There's tons of stuff on the way that's not optional, so I don't know how I could go directly to the dragon.
Right now I'm at the slave knight.  He's hard.  Where the hell is the dragon?!
She tells you how to find the dragon after he falls, but she turns hostile if you enter the Slave Knight area

You can exit the shortcut elevator near the dual ultra greatsword knight halfway down, you can find the dragon if you follow the left path there
Ugh I hate the NPC's in this game. I had absolutely zero reason to trek all the way back to where she was before fighting the dragon.  Why would they think that anyone would do that?  so lame.

The left path is a dead end.  The right path has a hole to get chloranthy ring.  Are we talking about the same lift?
Find the statue on the left path that's not like the others
Also you only had to return to her after throwing the dragon down the cliff
yes, but she said to come back to her after I killed the dragon.  Knocking him off that cliff didn't kill him, therefore zero reason to return to her.

the illusory wall in that room is the only one in the game so far that has no message scribbled by it, so there's no way I would have ever found it.

I was hoping my lightning miracles would help with the midir fight.  In fact, that was probably the main reason I went with this build.  But after trying them they're pretty useless.  I can only fire two sunlight spears before I have to drink blue estus, and they usually both miss.  The lightning arrow does hardly any damage.  grrr
You don't really know if you killed him or not after knocking him off the cliff if you don't already know that he becomes a proper boss. At least my reaction in my first blind playthrough was to go back to Shira. She tells you about the knight statue with the missing sword then. But yeah it's dumb that she goes hostile if you just proceed to the final area and doesn't provide you with that hint anymore. I generally turn back when I find a boss and finish exploring so I guess I was lucky.

As for Midir, his head is his weakspot. He's actually one of the better bosses for a caster, though I only fought him with an INT build.
True, but it's hard to imagine someone not knowing that he's a proper boss.

I killed Shira in the area where the slave knight boss was, but I had no idea that she was the same person as the one behind the door who told me to go kill the dragon until later when I read about it.

I guess I'm kind of screwed on this fight without re-specing.  Melee weapons are pretty much useless against this boss because even if you manage to get near him, most of the swings will miss since he's moving constantly and he does the big fire aoe attack when you're that close anyway.
