There's the one right at the beginning and that's it, yeah. It's actually a really small area once you figure it out. There are still a couple shortcuts that might be easy to miss
The only ring I got was a giants ring. And I met Lucatiel and some fat beer drinking dude. Is lucatiel considered 'the mage'? I'd like to find this bridge you can kick down. I did open the door near the beer drinker.
I dropped that dang bridge in no-mans wharf finally. I don't know why I had to die a dozen times to get back to the same area that I got to on just one life the first time. I think I'm just so much more careful the first time.
Loving my magic. It's really helpful in some situations.
I went ahead and bought a broadsword since I couldn't find one anywhere. It's a pretty dang good weapon.
Also got Ring of Whispers, though not sure what it's really good for yet.
I killed the no mans wharf boss on first try, but it took SO long. My winged spear + 2 was barely scratching him, and the only other R hand weapon I had equipped was sea bow, so I was kind of stuck with the spear. If the bosses so far are any indication, I can see how vital rolling is to this game.
Left + right hand doesn't really matter anymore, in fact dualwielding is an actual thing now. If you have 1.5x the stats required for your weapons, certain types are compatible to be powerstanced together by holding triangle which allows you to hit with both weapons at the same time. It's not the best for DPS but it has loads of poisebreak.
Most non-DLC bosses are totally fine to block, you just need a decent shield. If you beat the second Giants forest boss there's a great shield if you drop down right after his room, and the next area after him has a blacksmith who also sells a good low-req shield. Rolling is good Bloodborne preparation though.
You'll need the Ring of Whispers to be able to talk to one NPC later. It's not important, really, but it gets you a couple items.
And yeah a +2 weapon isn't really gonna do you a whole lot of good at this point. Might want to upgrade that one a bit more if you want to keep using it. Titanite and Large Titanite are a bit more available in this game than the first so getting a weapon to +4 isn't much of a risk.

Where do you get titanite? It seems super rare so far.

Majula Blacksmith sells 10, later you get another NPC that also sells 10 and eventually unlimited. The blacksmith in the area after the second Giants Forest boss also sells infinite Large Shards as soon as you get there. In vanilla DS2 you had to get an item from midgame on the other side of the world to make him sell you stuff, but in Scholar it's right where you enter his area, so that whole quest is essentially removed and you can get infinite Large Shards incredibly early. DPS is Damage Per Second.
I was playing around with the dual weapon function a few days ago using two bandit knives. Once you're in the dual stance, are you supposed to alternate pressing L and R?

So you have to buy them? I never bought a single shard in DS. I saw that the smith sold 10 shards but they're not cheap so I haven't bought any.
I know that a +2 weapon isn't going to do much damage, but so far in the game I've only found a tiny number of shards so that's kind of as far as I can upgrade anything.
If you're in powerstance your L buttons will do the dual attacks.
Shards are also dropped by various enemies, see wiki for a list. They're really not expensive, getting your weapon up will do way more for the price than putting it into levels. If you want the other normal shard vendor ASAP, warp to Majula and retread your steps towards Heide to find Licia, who will help you find your way with wondrous magic.
There's also a couple of shards in the upper floor of the Majula mansion and the armor vendor house. If +2 is your highest you might have missed them.
I definitely got those shards. I just used them on a variety of weapons and shields instead of focusing on one or two items. I take it there's no point in upgrading any of the armor? Speaking of armor, I've been wearing the travelling merchants hat a lot because it supposedly increases luck. It looks really stupid though. I prefer the brigand or knight armour so far.
I got pretty far into the huntsmans area. I lowered a bridge then found an area with a bonfire but it was behind locked door. So I turned around and went a different way, ended up crossing a long bridge with holes in it and saw a black phantom on the other side. I turned around because I had a lot of souls and wanted to go level up, and was invaded by a black phantom! My weapon hardly dented him at all, but I persisted in the fight for what seems like forever and totally pwned his ass lol.
I probably really pissed off the guy I beat though haha. About 5 minutes in, one hit from him hurt me pretty badly, so I went behind a tree to drink estus. Then I kept the tree between us and stabbed him through the tree. Repeat about 10 times. Then he backs away from the tree and I step out from behind the tree and hit him with soul arrow. Strategy born. Win.
Normally there should be an interval of 15 or 30 minutes at LEAST between invasions. Unless they've changed that in Dark Souls 2. Which wouldn't surprise me because you ca block invaders by burning an effigy.
btw, in Dark Souls an Demons' Souls you can only get invaed in human/body form respectively.
