I took it up from chasm. It stopped at royal wood near where I fought artorias. I stepped back onto it and it went up again, to a higher area of royal wood.
Then when I stepped onto it again, it went back down to the previous place (near artorias fight). From there, it only goes back up to the higher area of royal wood. It never goes back down to chasm. I tried everything, could not make it go back down, only up and down between the two areas of the wood. Bugged, maybe? :(
Anyways, I really hate the Manus fight. Once I get hit, it takes so long to stand back up that he's hitting me again the moment I'm on my feet. Repeat until all health gone. I can manage to sneak in an estus sip or two, but not without getting hit again...and again. I tried getting my equipment load below 20% which helped dodge some attacks, but getting hit by just one attack starts the cycle of falling on the ground, taking forever to get up, getting immediately knocked down again. So I tried to tank him, which makes dodge all but impossible but you can do some blocking. But stamina bar is zero very fast and the fall to the ground cycle repeats. Targeting him is mistake because when he leaps in the air the camera becomes your enemy, but untargeting him means missing a lot of attacks since he moves around so much. Finally I just went in and didn't care about trying to dodge or block but instead just attacking as much as I could. I went through 18 estus, several of which were wasted because I just spammed the drink button and kept drinking after health bar was full, but he did go down finally. The main reason I hated the fight is because he's huge yet moves so fast doing so many different things that it's all just a huge random blur with no time to react to anything or even see wtf he's doing. It felt next to impossible to even try to study him since it was all way too fast and huge - can't see shit.
I did go to the wiki for help and saw a whole bunch of items that they suggested I use, but I haven't seen any of them. I thought I'd been fairly thorough in picking things up, not to the point of getting everything but they were mentioning lots of stuff that I don't have.
And what's up with all the carvings? Is their purpose going to become clear at some point, or is their purpose too cryptic to know without being told?
The carvings are just fun. I had an invader spam "HELP ME" Carvings after he brutally murdered me. He also had an Egghead. I laughed.

I, uh, well that's new to me. There's 2 of them around where Artorias was, one of them should take you back to the Chasm. But yeah that's odd. :/
Yeah Manus is tough, faster than you'd expect, throws out magic, tons of HP, hits like a freight train on steroids. It's easily missable offline but there's a fake wall that allows you to rescue Past Sif who can be summoned in the boss arena to distract him so you have a bit more room to breathe. I've never beaten him without Sif so good job!
I did rescue sif but I couldn't find his summon sign anywhere. I was human when I looked for it. I just assumed it was because I killed him already, but that would be weird since I'm supposed to be in the past now.
It can be hard to find since, you know, giant hell monster keeping the camera aimed upwards. Fun fact: When online people who know where the summon sign spawns will often put down a message right on it that says "Blocking". It's less funny in the moment.
Manus is the real final boss of the game if you ask me. It's a proper very difficult fight. Gwyn is all about parrying or baiting his grab, which really sucks. He's also not as varied in his animations as Manus. So good job on beating Manus. That guy always gives me trouble when I play, no matter which build I'm using.
And it sure sounds like you mixed the two elevators in the area before the Arena where you fight Artorias up. One of them is linked straight with the chasm, but can be easily missed if you don't know where to look for it.
Also just to make sure you don't assume you're done and go beat up Gwyn, there's another DLC boss which you haven't mentioned so I assume you didn't fight him.
I've used the other elevator too. I'm telling you the one that comes straight from the chasm will not go back down to the chasm. Is there something special I need to do to make it go back down? I've ridden it up from the chasm twice now and for the life of me it won't go back down.
Unless - are those two elevators in the same bulding? I'm going to feel really stupid if both times I rode up from the chasm, I left the small building to verify my surroundings, then returned into the building and got on a different elevator.
Also just to make sure you don't assume you're done and go beat up Gwyn, there's another DLC boss which you haven't mentioned so I assume you didn't fight him.
Yeah I think it was you who mentioned the dragon down that path. Definitely going to check him out.
lol that's exactly what I did the the elevator. I had ridden it up, came out and looked around a bit, then went back onto the wrong elevator - twice. I'm just glad I don't really know you people right now.
Well it can help you set up Red Tearstone Ring or make the game more challenging, but it doesn't have any hidden benefits, it does just what it says. Better than nothing.
Well I read on the wiki that I need to go talk to the giant before you hinted me, so I was pretty much there.
And the dragon went down on the first try after that. I went with 17 (I think) estus and used them all. Halberd +15, gargoyle helm + black knight set, crest shield, cloranthy & havel rings. Just stayed under his feet and attacked the crap out of him, then every time he knocked me down I got up and drank estus, repeat. He came very close to killing me twice when he flew away a little and breathed fire on me.
Doesn't seem like you missed any bosses, so good luck. Also it's not obvious at all that there's a choice to be made, so be aware that after you kill Gwyn you can either light the bonfire in the middle of his room, or go back out through where the fogwall was. These trigger two different endings.
Sheesh as soon as I knew that I could parry/riposte Gwyn I took him down totally effortlessly. I think he may have gotten one hit one me right away, but after that I just parryed/riposted, then when he got up I did it again. Maybe six times - down he went. I guess all that practicing of parrying paid off. Cool game. So tempted to just keep playing into ng+ but the timing isn't good, going to wait.
I lit the bonfire, btw. That seemed like the normal thing to do vs the other way, so I'll consider the other way to be an alternative ending to try later.
