And yeah it's unfortunate they didn't separate elemental damage and the more-base-damage-for-no-scaling mechanic. In the sequels there's just a general upgrade path and then you can use elemental stones to give a weapon a specific element that changes its damage type and scaling. Much more elegant.

That sounds much better.

I read that there's another catarina NPC besides the one I've met, and she appears when you kill a crystal golem near the start of crystal cave, but she never appeared for me.  I read on to try to understand why, but it still isn't clear.  The last time I saw the other catarina npc was in lost izalith.  He jumped in the put with me to fight the piranha plants.  We killed the plants, and then I think he said something to me and left.  Sounds like if the other npc hasn't shown up by now then she's not going to.
Yeah she's part of Siegmeyer's questline that ends in Ash Lake and rewards you with a Titanite Slab. That Izalith fight needs to progress in a specific manner for the quest to continue.
You normally meet the other NPC before the part in Lost Izalith. Weird.
According to the wiki, the female catarina character first appears at crystal lake.  Are you saying that in a normal playthrough, you would do crystal lake before lost izalith?
After placing the Lordvessel you can do the Lord Soul bosses in any order.

Ash Lake is definitely available before Lost Izalith if that's what you're asking Opi

But Crystal Cave and Izalith can be done in any order as Serris pointed
Nah she means Crystal Cave.

I'm still trying to decipher this ^^^
Well it's not technically correct because there's no "normal" progression.
ok it makes sense now.  I just didn't know if he was saying that the game was doing something strange
I mean I thought you had to rescure and talk to Siegmeyer's daughter before the guy even shows up in Izalith
You can do Siegmeyer exclusively up to and including Izalith, but the Ash Lake event only happens if you do Sieglinde too.
One of the reasons I thought that you lost your leveling when you started ng+ is because I thought ng+ was the chance to try another build.  So do you generally stay on the same build path?  If I wanted to get all the trophies and stay on a melee build, does this mean I have to acquire all the sorcery/magic items that I can't even use just to get credit for acquiring them?

Yep. I ended up making a new main file because my first one got ruined by the Trophies
Clarify?
You have to get all the requirements for a trophy on one character, but you can do Pyromancy on one character and Sorceries on another and so on. And you don't have to be able to use them or anything. You could do the weapon trophies on your melee and make a caster that gets all the spells. Or just dupe millions of souls and level INT/FTH on this one for an all-purpose guy.
So yes I do have to get all the crap I can't even use if I want a trophy because it all has to be on the same character.

What if I acquire an item and then get rid of it?  Does that still count, or do I have to actually have them all at the same time?

If you want to get all the Trophies in *this* file, you have to ruin your build by leveling up all the other stats you're not using. There's no way around it. But you can always make new files and get the spell Trophies on those.
You have to have all the items required for a trophy at the same time in your inventory for the trophy to pop. And no you can just do the spell stuff on a new guy that you build for spells if you want.

There's no "ruining" of a build in PvE, really. Having more levels/stats only matters for multiplayer matchmaking. You already have all the stuff your melee guy needs leveled, so there's no harm in just getting the spell stats up too.

If you just level up everything, it's not really a build anymore...
Dood Trigger™
But of course, there's no punishment for leveling up as far as you want, except that you won't get to play with as many people online
I don't see your point. Builds are for PvP because you have a limited stat budget if you want to connect with the meta, it's not for the sake of having a "build".

I'm confused. In order to get an all-items trophy, I have to have all the items in my inventory at the same time AND it has to be on the same character, right?  I can't have a melee build character in slot 1 and a mage character in slot 2 and get the trophy that way, can I?

I'm not interested in pvp I think, so I guess it couldn't hurt to level up FAI and INT just a little bit on my character.  Right now they're like nothing.  I can only use like two or three sorceries and they're the weakest versions in the game so I don't even mess with them hardly.
You have to have all the items at the same time on one character that are required for a specific trophy, but all the spell types and "collect all weapons" are different trophies.
