I enjoy the boss more than an endless lava field of dragon butts. But Miyazaki only apologized for the boss iirc, so you have a point. Or maybe it just means he owes us another apology!

You can easily navigate the lava area w/o aggroing any of those dnosaurs. There's a path pretty much layed out for you. I never had much trouble there.
But the boss... fuck that shit.

No sound?
I was listening to the radio instead of ingame music so I decided to not record any audio.
Yeah, I haven't fought any dinosaurs since my "kill everything" run a couple hundred playthroughs ago. That doesn't mean it's a well-designed area. :>
The boss can at least be frustrating in a hilarious way on your first playthrough. Getting sweeped into a hole in your idle animation is always entertaining, and since the fight has checkpoints it never gets too bad. The dragon butts area is just boring in a we-have-nothing-else-to-put-here sort of way.
Also finally got around to doing No Death/No Bonfire in Scholar. Was quite a bit more intense than back in normal DS2 because Iron Keep. Also not nearly as familiar with item locations in this version but I only needed two Repair Powders. Bless you, guy who finally fixed 60fps durability.
Are you really not going to do the challenge areas, tbob? >_>
Someone told me that the easiest way to do NDNB (in vanilla) is to respec the character into a hex caster and spam Great Resonant Soul with Havels on. I'm so lazy to do that though. I always start the new cycle with Great Club and then I die some stupid death like getting knocked off a bridge at the Gutter...
Aside from a few bosses annoying me on account of me being garbo I've really enjoyed these DLCs, I mean unless Ivory king takes a giant shit here around the end, I can see why people have been so high on them even when they aren't so big on the base game.

They are meant for co op and I'm not overly inclined to do that. I'm also not inclined to try to solo something meant for co op.
I might poke my head into Frozen Outskirts just to get properly murdered in the spirit Dark Souls solidarity, but nothing I've seen or heard of those areas appeals to me in any way. Fight another Smelter Demon? Yeah, no thanks.
I recommend playing the Frozen Outskirts. They're... interesting. Unlike the one in Iron King DLC which is just dumb and the one in Sunken King which is boring.
You can just summon NPCs for the challenge areas. It's worked well enough for me.
I don't think they're "meant" for co-op. They're secluded minizones because you can summon people who don't have the DLC there to make them want to buy it since they can't walk out of there and see the rest of the DLC. They put in mechanics to make sure it's reasonable to kill them solo. The Outskirts fight works just like DS1 Gargoyles instead of just throwing two bosses at you, and the Sunken King trio's arena is made for kiting.
As for NDNB, I pretty much just speedrun it and hope for the best. Playing it safe actually makes me more nervous since I'm not used to it. Havelcasting sounds reasonable if you like casting and are on NG+.
For Ivory King make sure you explore the full Eleum Loyce area before you fight him. I still don't understand his sword's hitbox too well, but it's not a ridiculous fight. The annoying thing about Ivory King is having to do the gauntlet again every time you die.
I hate Frigid Outskirts. That said, there isn't much about it that screams co-op. It's just a long trip where you can't see crap. Still, yeah, there's not a lot of incentive for going in there (especially considering how dumb the trip is). I guess you can farm Bone Fists to play Street Fighter Souls.
