Oh and I got a spike shield.  I tried to parry with it and it kills people just from bashing them lol
If you're into quick weapons, I recommend Katanas and / or Quelaags Fury Sword.
Uchigatana: Basic katana weapon. Dropped by the emrchant in Lower Undead Burg when you kill him. Or can be bought from Shiva, who only spawns when you're in the Forest Guards (or whatever it was called) covenant. That's the one in the woods which you used to make the NPCs in there non hostile. Shiva shows up in the forst near the covenant leader NPC or down in Blighttown near the elevator later in game.
Iaito: Does a bit less damage than the katana, but has a very quick strong attack. Can be found in Blighttown, on a platform where you have to jump onto from near the end of the pathway if you keep going straight after coming from The Depths.
Chaos Blade: The strongest katana/quick weapon in the game, drains a bit of your health with each slash. Can be made from Quelaag's boss soul and any +10 katana iirc.

Quelaag's fury sword: Curved 1-handed sword. Is a bit slower than katanas iirc, but is still relatively quick and does a ton of fire damage. Very useful in multiple end game areas.

Both weapons you can make with Quelaag's soul gain additional damage for each soft humanity point you have up until 10.

You should hold on to them, they don't give that many souls anways.

Doesn't the ascension screen of the giant smith show you all the weapons you can make with your boss souls by default? So ideally you can go and check what seems good and worth holding onto.

Does it?  Maybe it does and I didn't notice, but I know for sure that there was only one that he could make for me at that time, even though I have a half dozen boss souls.

Well, it's possible that you need the required type of pre-upgrade weapon for it to be shown on the list. The system kinda sucks, yeah. I always end up consulting the wikis and spoiling myself in these games.........
I see what you mean now, I wasn't paying attention to the darkened options.  I see them now.

I do have uchigatana +10 and I now have a quelaag sword +5.  Starting to love the scythe more too.

Now I just need to figure out where to go next.  I read about a ring that is in undead asylum, but isn't that the tutorial level?  I don't know how to get back there.  the crow is unresponsive, and I don't want to shoot him lest there be consequences.  Don't tell me!

I'm thinking Valley of Drakes.  I haven't explored that area at all, I've just used two small areas of it to get between other areas.  If by 'drakes' they mean dragons, I should be in for a treat.

Also, I'm assuming there are trophys for obtaining all weapons, etc.  But do I have to have them all at the same time?  What I'm getting at is: can I get rid of weapons that I think I don't want any more?

About where you need to go and the ring in the Undead Asylum. Just read this later if you really get stuck. It's just a bunch of vague hints though!

1. Have you talked to the snake yet? Have you been down in the ghost area?
2. Haven't you ssen the item on the rooftop in Firelink Shrine? There's got to be a way up there! Hmm...

btw you can get a +15 weapon before you even walk into Sen's Fortress :)
I just cleared Blight Town. Gonna do some optional stuff next before I challenge Sen's Fortress. I plan on using the Moonlight Spear, so I need to deal witht he Titanite Demons for the upgrade material. That's gonna be a pain.

And damn Blight Town was a pain with this character. I died like 4 or 5 times. That place is normally piss easy for me :/

I've talked to the ridiculous serpent, yes.  Ghost area?  Do you mean new londo ruins where my weapons don't hurt the ghosts?  Or do you mean the area where I put the lord vessel?  Isn't the area where I put the lord vessel just a dead end except for the locked door behind the altar?

Speaking of dead ends, I don't see a way to go any further within Valley of Drakes.  I came to a huge black door, don't see a way to go further.

So I guess the places I can go explore are: great hollow, area that was blocked by orange fog in anor londo, area you described in firelink shrine, hydra fight, area past quelaag.
Oh, you've placed the lord vessel already. Then you should have seen the cutscene with those orange fog gates diasappearing? That's where you need to go now.

The ghosts you can hurt by being cursed, by using a transient curse (can be found in New Londo even before you encounetr the first ghost and is dropped by said ghosts) or by using special weapons which the ghosts drop.

The door in Valley of Drakes opens later. You'll be disappointed though :p

Just keep on playing. You already have two correct routes on your list. Then there's the graveyard which you've probably forgotten about. And make sure to keep searching Firelink Shrine.

When you get the peculiar doll, read its description and THINK HARD.
ohhhh...went back to graveyard and explored more carefully, found catacombs.  Got pretty far in, feeling sick, need to lay down  :(

But I just used a broadsword +10 on both of them.  That's the weapon I've been using for a long time now.  I've experimented a little with other weapons, but I seem to like small, fast, and agile weapons.  The big ones feel so clunky.  The spears are nice.  Still haven't even used a club.

The Broadsword is secretly a very good weapon. Do not feel pressured to move on to something else, it's a good solid weapon.

Quote from Da Dood:
You pretty much wait and poke that guy. He has a follow up attack for everything, so you really just gotta find the right opportunity and know he's not gonna do a third or fourth slash when the combo appears to be over. Roll into his attacks (sword comes from left, dodge to the left).

If for some reason you find the buffed sword easier to dodge (as some people do), you can wear Velstadt's helm and he starts the fight buffed already. The way I did it last time was by running away from him in circles, unlocked, and waiting until he did the one overhead swing that had a decent window to counter (at SL1 though, so my weapons and defense sucked and this may not be the best strategy overall).

Well I mean that's the thing, I wait and wait and wait and finally find an opening where I know I can hit him because I've done it four or five times but NOPE this time he just causally backhands me with a greatsword. It wouldn't be so bad if I knew why, like if there was something I he differently that time or there was something I did that I just didn't realize it'd be one thing but I honestly have no idea what triggers that counter. Like the timing doesn't even seem consistent, sometimes I can dodge it and sometimes I'm caught in my attack animation, it's confusing. And ends up with the Sinh problem where it feels like I'm left having to just stare at the boss until it decides I can participate, just with the added bonus where this guy goes, "Nah" and belts me across the arena sometimes. He doesn't seem to do it in any of the videos I've watched of people beating him so there's something I'm missing apparently.

I did try the Velstadt thing and it didn't really make much difference for me, his attacks are easier to dodge but the penalty for less than perfect dodges is much higher and invariably I'll walk into one of his fireballs like a dingus as I apparently have a depth perception problem. But for me he almost always continues his combo after an overhead swing, thrusts are fine to counter far as I can tell. I mean either way I last about as long on average. The random counters in phase one just shorten some fights considerably. :v
I don't have the doll but I think I know what it's for.

Make sure you have a Divine weapon equipped if you're going there, you will likely get annoyed if you don't.
I know about that problem with the fume knight. I think I only fought him with summons becauseof that shit. Really annoying
man how deep are the catacombs?  I went SO far without any bonfire.  I went in with only a few thousand souls but died with over 50K (that I will never find again).  It just...keeps....going.  The enemies that killed me seemed indestructible too.  I used all 9 of my estus one right after the other just trying to figure out what they were.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
There is a hidden bonfire further down, behind a fake wall by the first switch that rotates a bridge. There'll be one of those spike trap statues right up against the fake wall. It's also possible to drop down most of the way and skip pretty much all of it, if you want.

As for the enemies, the skeletons will get back up after death until you kill the necromancer in their area, you can get around this by killing them with a divine weapon. That will keep them dead so you can get to the necromancer more easily.
Thanks, I'll definitely look for it.  I found the fire smith and made a couple of fire weapons.  I also killed some boss that gave me rite of kindling and some mask that makes my stamina recharge super fast.  Skull lantern too.  AND there's still two fog doors I haven't messed with.  I also fell in a hole and died but before the words 'you died' came up, the words TOMB OF THE GIANTS came onto the screen.  I was trying to follow a trail of prism stones in a dark place when this happened.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
You are gonna need to equip that skull lantern when you get back to Tomb of the Giants, the prism stones are not the most reliable guide.
I suggest unlocking the DLC (not completing it) for now and buying Cast Light from the NPC trapped in the golem so you don't have to sacrifice your shield for the lantern.

As for Fume Knight, he has subtle tells for whether his combos are done or not, you just have to be on your toes throughout the whole fight.

I went back there and equipped it, but wasn't sure if I noticed any difference at all so I left.
And it turns out those 2 fog doors were the same fog door viewed from two different sides lol.

I got the darkmoon seance ring and went to darkmoon tomb and joined a covenant.  Then i pissed off some lady by stepping into her chamber and she killed me.

Does that involve killing hydra?
Yeah, it involves the steps to unlocking the DLC ryu posted a while ago.
Great.  There goes my anor londo bonfire.  I warped there and some person attacked me so I killed them and now the bonfire is out.  Wtf?
For Hydra, just run in as close as you can (watch where the ground ends under the water), get as close to the edge as possible, and the Hydra will only use very intimidating-looking melee attacks, which can actually easily be blocked with your shield. After you blocked it, its heads are easy targets, so just repeat that a few times until the heads are gone. If you can't reach some of the heads, finish it off with some ranged attacks.
There are two ways to get to hydra though.  Do I go in via the basin side, or down the ladder from the garden?
Oh yeah, the Anor Londo Firekeeper is part of the Darkmoon covenant, so you pissed them off when you pissed their master off. Generally, if an NPC suddenly goes hostile for seemingly no reason, you might want to run away and figure out whether you can befriend them again by having Oswald absolve your sins.
Whatever way you want, the goal is the same. Warping to Undead Parish is the fastest way to get there.
