Well, almost.
The system is the same, it's just incremental and thus more forgiving.
The whole hit point degradation mechanic is kind of dumb. Dying might as well have dropped it down to 50% and given you the Ring of Binding earlier on in the game.
Another thing to keep in mind about Humanity is that it affects your item drop rate, so if you're looking for rare drops, you should raise it up to 10 before farming.

You can get it at the very start if you want to in Scholar.
In original DkSII it's also right there in Heide, no idea what he's on about.

Yeah, Ring of Binding is probably the first real thing I get in DkS2. I'm glad you can just walk into Heide ASAP and run for it.
I don't think I used that ring a lot. There's enough human effigies to use if you get to a critical point in terms of your health

I don't think I've ever successfully ran past all the Old Knights to get it.

Oh, right. They did change its placement in that version.

Speaking of Scholar, I never did manage to beat all the DLC. I dropped it mostly out of frustration over that one boss fight against a trio of undead warriors in the lost city.
That boss is super optional lol
Like you get nothing good out of going to that cave where that fight occurs
Well, that sucks.

Just grab the morningstar from Majula and beat 'em down!

I've been too scared to go back into any of the DLC because Elan from Sunken King walled me so fuckin hard. Everywhere I've looked has suggested she is easy as dicks and the other DLC bosses are way tougher so lol r.i.p. me. So I just keep making new characters go run around the main game with. :v
git gud
How often did you die to Elana before giving up? Have you tried summoning help?
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Like 20 times lol, at least I used around that many Effigies I'm sure I took a few runs while hollow. You see I am not good at dodging.

NPC summons didn't help much and there weren't any human summons around, which is probably for the best because my internet it trash tier so they probably wouldn't be much help.
Ok... wow.

I say check out the other DLC anyways. Maybe you can handle the bosses there better.
It'll also help with levelling up. I did the the Sunken CIty DLC last when I played.
You don't need to run past Old Knights. They're early-game enemies, you're well-equipped to beat them with any lvl 0 non-broken-sword-weapon. They'll gang up on you at the drawbridge anyway if you run past and don't take out the one that triggers the switch really fast. Killing a dozen Old Knights on your way to the Cathedral is way easier than killing a single Heide Knight, so even though Scholar's ring was relocated near Dragonrider it's still harder to get.

For Elana, what are you having trouble dodging? Do you have at least 20 ADP? A good dark defense shield?

Literally everything once Velstadt shows up. :v

It's where my preference for slower weapons hurts me because I hit Elana then before the animation is done Velstadt runs in and turns me into a crater. So finding openings takes longer, because I'm either dodging or trying to kill Velstadt depending on how annoyed I am on that particular run, meaning the fight takes longer meaning I get annoyed and get even worse at the game. I also like when you kill Velstadt only for her to resummon him immediately because fuck you that's why.
Yeah, unless you can 1-shot the skeletons to open a huge window of opportunity on Elana, it's better to ignore the summons and use hit-and-run. You can also leave 1 or 2 skeletons alive to prevent her from summoning more. If you get lucky, she can also fill her summon slots with little piggies and the chances of her ever summoning Velstadt drop to zero. But the easiest way is to just DPS her dead before she can do much or anything at all, assuming you're on NG. Rapier + buffs or for overkill Magic Ice Rapier + buffs will do the trick.

Every single time I killed Elana, including at SL1, my method was DPS and hope I don't get swarmed. Not a fan of that boss. The good news is that the boss after her is a lot more fair IMO.

The gank squad can be manipulated to a degree. As long as you take care of the sniper first, the other two guys won't know how to navigate the geography very well. I just keep running around in a pattern and surprising either of 'em behind corners. Constantly changing 'floors' via those little ramps there makes the AI super confused in my experience.
