There is a bonfire with less enemies in the way at Darkroot Basin (the door at the bottom of that tower). But I'm pretty sure it's the same distance.

oh I thought that door went to another part of the same area I'm in.  I was looking everywhere for how to come in through the other side lol

Back when you played Bayonetta you were complaining about there being too many options in the combat and whatnot. These games are deep, but that doesn't mean you can't have a satisfying experience with the stuff you figure out on your own. You'll probably enjoy the game better if you just play it, instead of wondering if the game has fulfilled all the requirements to be a spotless perfectly designed thing.

It is never required to have <25% to dodge attacks. You have invincibility frames even when fat rolling. But obviously the quick roll is that much better so it makes a huge difference.

I like the options, I just don't like the fact that they're so secret.  And my 'complaint' about Bayo was just because I though it was silly that they bothered to actually list such an insane number of combos as if they expected anyone to play the game enough times to learn them all.  It was almost easier to pull them off by accident then to go in planning the sequences from dozens of choices.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
I am too casual to remember proper weapon procedure. :(((((

Besides Chaos Zweihander ofc
The true Duke skip is playing on Xbox and doing Kiln skip. PC is for casuals.
Lol I just killed the fukr

Congrats! He deserved it!

Souls games can be cryptic but it's the sort of thing that comes with the experience. You're left to die in a hellish environment and there won't be any hand holding to ease you into it. A lot of people embraced that, even if the design doesn't do a good job at explaining everything. You're playing an a-hole of a game that happens to be freaking awesome too. And you'll be better than all the bullshit in it, trust me!

My first time through the game I almost quit because whenever I got stuck and asked for help, people would recommend some ring or weapon that I would have no way of knowing myself. So I definitely know how you feel. But it just is what it is. You'll still feel pretty good about killing stuff even if someone gives you a hint. IMO, the things you don't know and the BS are only a fraction of what makes Dark Souls. A cheap death/cryptic feature would piss me off at first, but now I am better at the game to the point where it's not an issue anymore, or I just accept it as part of the game and move on.

The combos in Bayonetta are all done by similar sequences. Mash punch, mash kick, mix and match, punch *pause* punch, etc.
I guess I just don't like having to research

I got thief clothes, sorcerer clothes, a twin humanity, met some zombie-lady merchant.  Ended up back near the beginning of undead burg.  There's lots of loops in this game and they're a nice surprise.  You think you're in kansas and then you realize you're in your fucking backyard.

Totally.  And what's really messed up is after I killed him I went to put the ring on and realized I never ever equipped that drake sword lol.  I wonder how much easier it would have been
If you don't like tanking with heavy armor, the Black Leather set is arguably one of the best light armors in the game.

Yeah these games can be weird in that asking/looking for help can be, while necessary, infuriating because the advice will almost inevitably include get/do XYZ you couldn't know about or change literally everything about how you play because I have decided you are playing it wrong.

Ultimately there's no one thing that will win the game for you you don't need any specific gear to win, finding a good shield is a huge help, finding a good weapon is good but the warrior's starting longsword can carry you through the game as long as you keep it upgraded.
I think Sen's Fortress and Anor Londo get you into that mindset more than any other areas in the game. Then, later on you realize it was just a massive difficulty spike and the rest of the game is fine, lol.

All roads lead to Firelink pretty much lol, it's very nice. The world is really well laid out. If you have spare souls later you might want to invest in a good number of poison arrows from that merchant, there is one instance where they can be very useful as far as avoiding a headache.

Not much really, if at all. Havel's beefy as shit, physical attacks just aren't going to do a whole lot to him. Some weapons get a bigger damage bonus on backstabs and ripostes which would matter more than simply higher base damage.

Sen's is the best thing in the game. wub It exists solely to prove to you that you can do this, if you can get through Sen's you are ready for anything the game can throw at you.
I killed him with only ripostes and I think I did it maybe 8 or 9 times before he went down.

I'm heading back to that merchant lady now, I'll be sure to snag a bunch of poison arrows thanks

Finding a 'good shield' is a bit perplexing for me because I'm not able to see hardly any difference between most of them.  Sure I can see that one might be better for blocking fire or magic than the others, but most seem incredibly similar.
You generally always want 100% physical defense and decent stability (determines how much stamina you lose when you block an attack), and then maybe backups that are good against magic and fire.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Most are fairly similar, yeah, since you started as a warrior you started with pretty much the best early game shield due to having 100% physical block while being very light and having fairly typical stability for its class. There will be times when magic, poison or fire block is more important so keep an eye out for shields that do that better. The knights in and around the chapel that leads to the Gargoyles can drop one of the best shields in the game, the Balder Shield, but you'll also be able to buy it later.

The game seems to think you only want to see a shield's attack stats for god knows what reason and I find that hilarious.
I just found a cadeuces shield.

Then right in the middle of a fight, 'please reconnect controller' comes up and I die.  The game doesn't even stop when the controller runs out of batteries?!  Fuck you xbox.
Savequitting is your only pause button. It also resets enemies, so it's very handy in a tight spot.

If you're going for a more tanky style, you might as well go all the way, so definitely look into greatshields as well.

There's two shields with that name, the one found in the graveyard is decent against magic and will be worth keeping in mind the other is a kite shield that is less good for magic but still a very good shield.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
As a general rule shields that are better against elements and such tend to be worse against physical attacks. This is less true for Greatshields than your standard or small shields but there are also very few places where elemental resists are of particular use.
Got all the stuff from the graveyard.  And some gargoyle tail axe that bends when you swing it.
Sounds like you're in for a fun ride soon :)
The gargoyle tail axe is so weird.  When you R2 it, it bends like it's made of rubber.
Yeah, it's kind a weird gimmick. I never used the weapon aside from a few test swings.
It fell off the gargoyle boss during one of the attempts to kill him.  I was shocked and distracted, so I died.  Killed him on the next attempt though.
Some bosses drop special items when you cut their tails. Same as the wyern.
