Back from the dead. Got a new job, and quit that job. I remembered really quick why I don't like chain retail.
Quote from arkarian:
nonsense, work should be your life!!!!!!

Aaaand this is why I quit. I was the top performer in my department, thanks to previous experience. And we had our "follow up" after the first month to see how we're doing at the job. The bitch started listing all these things that "need improvement". "You don't come to work prepared". Uhhh, what? I clock in 5 minutes early and start my job. She says that no, I should be here twenty minutes early, I should walk through my department, catch up on the promos for my department, and make sure everything is stocked up in my department before I even clock in to make sure I'm REALLY ready to start working. Then talks to me about how I don't 'respect' my job enough, and asks me if I know why she would feel that way. I just flat out tell her, "uhh, no, I don't know why you feel that way" to which she says "and that's the mentality that makes me think you don't respect this job". LIKE, WHAT BITCH? She then talks about how I'm using my own methods of selling and meeting customer's requirements instead of the way that this particular company wants me to... meanwhile I'm top of my department and hitting all the goals.

I also got written up three times in my first month. The first time I got written up was because my car had a flat tire, and I called both my supervisors over half an hour before my shift started to let them know. But since I didn't call over two hours before my shift, I got in trouble. The second time was because a Secret Shopper came into the store and wanted to buy a camera, and since I didn't ask her about her HOME NETWORKING SETUP I got points off, because it's ~required~ of every employee, in every department, to ask, "If you don't mind me asking, have you been having any internet trouble lately? Slow speeds or disconnects? Because we have experts in our networking department that can set you up with a new modem and router!". The third time was because I literally tore my pants down the back and had to go home to get a new pair, which took longer than 30 minutes thanks to traffic and a snow storm and wasted my entire lunch break.

After the bitch told me that I could be "facing possible suspension" I was just done. Especially considering this was literally the lowest paying job I've ever had, AND we don't make commission despite it being a sales job.

So now tomorrow I have an interview with an accounting job with great hours and is going to have the best pay I've ever had. Only thing that sucks is I'm going to have to actually work all week and won't have nearly as much time for games.
I like turtles.
But you'll have the money to afford the games!!

This culture has to end. If you want people to come earlier, then tell them their working hours start earlier. No employer is expected to stop assigning tasks half an hour before the end of business hours to "prepare" for the work day to end, so why is coming early expected to "prepare" for it to begin?

I may not enjoy dealing with clients as part of a web marketing agency but stuff like this is a needed reminder that I don't miss retail at all.

seems like your main goal should be to get a salaried job rather than hourly

hourly pay is fucking bullshit lol
I like turtles.
I wouldn't put it past an employer to penalize workers for such things even if they were salaried though, it just wouldn't be as direct (or legal). Also hourly pay sucks when you file your tax return, as I found out a couple of weeks ago. :\

With the new job I have they start you hourly, and promote you within a year to a salary if you make the cut. So I'm definitely looking forward to that if it holds true

I mean if I was on salary then I'd feel like I'm already getting paid for my time and it'd definitely motivate me to be twenty minutes early, make sure my work area is properly prepped for me to start working. But they physically wouldn't let me clock in early while in the same breath telling me to get to work. Probably illegal but whatever.

Like yeah a bunch of dumb teenagers were upset because MUH YOUTUBER but it just seemed unprofessional as hell the way the company handled it.

I think it's also partly cause of all the tumblr SJW safe-space drama and both sides of it are getting really obnoxious now
omg poision, good thing you quit that job. what a horrible company to work for.
That place sounds like bullshit.  It sounds like the kind of place with high turnaround that they blame on everything but how shitty the job is.

I've had jobs where they expect you to come in and prepare for work off the clock.  When I worked in a casino, it took up to 30 mins to count and verify all the money and chips and balance sheets before actually hitting the casino floor, and that was all off the clock.  Counting down and balancing it all was off the clock, too.  So up to an hour of unpaid work every day!  Anyone who complained about it was told to Git Gud so that counting only took a few minutes, which is next to impossible esp when you consider how they stress the importance of accuracy.

Practices like this probably are going to be less and less tolerated with each generation entering the workforce, which will lead to more complaints and lawsuits.

when i worked at cfa i just ignored that rule and clocked in accurately. no one ever said anything to me personally so i guess they didn't care that much
There was no way to ignore it in the casino because they wanted you to clock in and hit the floor within 2 minutes of your start time and if you did not then you were tardy.  The policy requires you to go through a whole checklist of shit before hitting the floor, and you had to do it BEFORE clocking in.  At least they paid well.

man i don't think i could do it

Woo, my interview went very well. The only hiccup in the interview was when we were chatting and I discussed my car accident and my car getting totaled. I forgot to mention that I was rear ended, and that my car getting totaled wasn't my fault. I really hope they don't think I'm irresponsible because of that. Oh well.

Yeah, I wouldn't be able to do that. Unless they were paying extremely well, THEN I'd do it because I'd feel like I'm making enough for it to be moot.

Haha actually yeah that's pretty accurate, I didn't consider that.

The rumor and gossip in that workplace was so fucking real too. I've never gotten thrown into work-place drama as hard and as quickly as that job.
"Hey, don't tell anyone I said this, but so-and-so is out to backstab us and he keeps sabotaging my work area"
"Yeah don't listen to that other guy and don't tell anyone I said this but but blah and blah is teaming up with zorgon to make me look bad"
"Yeah you know Rachelina in phones? She totally wants your dick and she sleeps with everyone that works here"
"So you know Rachelina right? Yeah she's cool but she's a total lesbian and hates men, don't talk to her"

like hot damn, I don't give a shit, just do you work jesus christ how bored are you people.
red chamber dream
rachelina is the best name.
agreed
man css grid seems pretty good. I did a simple test with it and it works great. how more complicated scenarios play out with it remains to be seen, but I assume it's all smooth. after all that's the purpose after all the fuckery with floats, weirdly syntaxed inline blocks, tables annd all that shit we had to deal with so far. nobody should want to work with that.

I'm going to use this for my new blog. fuck incomaptible browsers. with jekyll i can just make a separate site with the safer default theme, copy & paste my content in there, and redirect users w/o compatibility to that site
I like turtles.
Grid seems like they're caving and making a default behavior for all those hacks that everyone is doing anyway.

Not that that's a bad thing.

Oh fuuuuuck yes, I got the new big-boy-job. Finally going into a real accounting job, where you gotta dress nice and I gotta say, the girls are god damn cute at this credit union. Can't fucking waaaaait.

Also looks like I got it just in time because my back right tire keeps losing air. I'll fill it to 31 psi, it'll stay there for a week or two, then randomly over night it'll drop down to 25.

I had a tire that did that, too.  I just assumed that temperature and barometric changes affected the leak in different ways.
CONGRATS on the job.
