Fuck gamestop.  The copy of DS2 they sold me was 'new' according to gamestop, even though they had taken the plastic wrapper off of it.  However, for the return policy, it is not considered 'new' because it has been opened.  So when gamestop opens it, it's still new, but if the customer opens it then it's suddenly used.

The next time one of their employees asks me if I want a NEW copy and then hands me one that has no plastic on it, I'm going to let them have it.  I've bouught 'new' shit from them once before that had been opened without thinking about this trickery.  Never again.
yeah that's kind of bullshit
Is GameStop like the only physical store left that sells games in the US? Over here they're more expensive than general multimedia stores and a pain to deal with if anything is wrong. There's pretty much no reason to go there unless you're looking for used stuff or want to trade in your PS3 to get 10€ off your PS4 purchase or similar great deals.
I like turtles.
There are definitely smaller local shops that do much the same thing, but GameStop is pretty much the only franchise.
I went in there to buy a used game.  The cashier told me that he had the same game as NEW for only $2 more.  I agreed to buy the new copy.  Then I saw that it was opened, and questioned whether it was new.  He explained that gamestop still considers it to be new because it's a 'store copy' and the condition is new.  I opened it an looked at the disc, and noted that there was no insert.  He told me that games don't come with inserts any more, which isn't true, but whatever.  He asserted that the game was NEW.  I really wish I could go back in time and tell him that he's full of shit.
Apparently, the kid was supposed to put a sticker seal on the game so they would know if I played it or not, but he didn't so I'm fuct.
Well that certainly explains why people hate and still use them lol. At least you can sell it as unused to someone else and tell them the newness is GameStop approved!
red chamber dream
gamestop has been doing this for literally decades

i stopped buying new games from them well over a decade ago, mostly for that reason
red chamber dream
they're still good for used games though
red chamber dream
they don't make any money from new games anyway so it's not like they care
heh last time I bought a new game from a chain in the UK, I lost track of the amount of useless extra add-on bullshit they tried to peddle me

special edition? no thanks!
insurance against damage? no thanks!
get £5 off some other game nobody wants if you buy it at the same time? yeah, one more of these and I will be leaving empty-handed
I've only been to one gamestop outside the USA and it was in Dover, England.  They had the little adapter you need in order to use headphones on a GBA SP, but I was short by like 25 pence or so.  The guy said that was fine and sold it to me anyway.  That would NEVER happen in the USA.  Shame I can't go back and give him my business again.
I didn't even know we had gamestops over here lol

that must have been a while ago
That was some premium item right there, I had to order that adapter directly from Nintendo.
It was in 2005.  I'm pretty sure it was a gamestop.
I just told my boss I was tired and she said 'Why don't you take the rest of the day off?'  I said 'I thought we were on a blackout for time off'  She said 'April Fools!'  Does she know what the fucking date is today?!  Cunt
stay on target
I like turtles.
...where "target" refers to the boss' head, amirite.
rotfl wtf is wrong with that person
To be fair, doing April Fools on April Fools would be way too obvious. That's the last thing you want a prank to be.
the date doesn't even matter, that was a super shitty 'joke'

hopefully I can shed some light on this. They weren't trying to trick you. Nothing they did was an attempt to "trick" you.

He wasn'y lying when he said games these days don't come with inserts. They DONT come with inserts. In fact, none of them come with inserts:

The reason it's not considered "new" after you opened it isn't because you opened. It's because you took it home, and USED it. When gamestop receives the game, they open the case, and put the CD away into a sleeve to put away for safe keeping. They never USE the game, so yes, it's still "new".

The only thing you can fault them for in your situation is that the kid didn't put a sticker on the case. If you contact the store and tell them that he didn't put a sticker on it, then they will have absolutely no problems with it. The people at gamestop are humans too. Your posts about it come off as honestly kinda douchey and ignorant about what was happening. Wanting to tell the kid he's full of shit, lying, and trying to trick you. The kid is getting paid minimum wage to sell video games. Give him a fuckin' break.

What's funny to me is that you came in there EXPLICITLY TO BUY A USED COPY. "I went in there to buy a used game.". And then you rant on and on about how they sold you a new game. Like, the fuck?

i like how poision is reciting the gamestop standard line lol

just because it's not illegal and you know why doesn't mean it's not slimy as fuck

amazon doesn't need to take new games out of their shrinkwrap. nor does any other store. there's no reason gamestop needs to either. it's bullshit.
