yes I know it's dry here but my hands never get that dry unless I clean something using chemicals and don't wear rubber gloves.  A couple of days after I do that, my cuticles are cracked, hangnails are forming, and the creases of my knuckles crack.

Heavy metals ain't nothing to fuck with.
good stuff, I didn't think it would work lol
When I was a kid, I was trying to fake having a fever so I didn't have to go to school.  I put the tip of the thermometer under a hot running tap, then placed it in my mouth.  It felt sharp, so I pulled it out of my mouth and examined it.  The bulb on the end had broken, presumably because the mercury expanded too much and burst the thin glass.  I looked under my tongue and saw several beads of mercury sitting there along with a minor cut.  I spit it out and rinsed, then threw the thermometer on the floor to break it and then told my mom that I accidentally dropped it.  I knew the mercury was poisonous at the moment this happened, but I didn't know how poisonous it was until I did some more research.  I was freaked out about it for a long time.  Scared me!  To this day I have no idea what that shit did to me, if anything.
probably nothing much, it's chronic exposure you have to worry about

Did you know there's a type of mercury that can penetrate protective gloves and kill you slowly over years? It's true!

Science! teach
my favourite mercury thing is "liquid red mercury", which doesn't exist
it's a fake chemical which could supposedly be used to create very small nuclear weapons, perfect for terrorism

the story goes that it was actually invented by western intelligence agencies to attempt sting operations against potential arms dealers, but of course once journalists got a sniff of it ... I remember scaremongering documentaries on TV around 1990 about what a POTENTIAL THREAT it was, and I was terrified as a child

whole thing was a total fabrication, fucking journalists
Some kids in my HS science class stole a jar of mercury from the lab.  They played with it a lot with bare hands.  I thought they were so stupid.

hahaha media sensationalism never changes.
the wikipedia article on it is great

"The articles were never specific as to what exactly red mercury was, but nevertheless claimed it was of great importance in nuclear bombs, or that it was used in the building of boosted fission weapons. Almost as soon as the stories appeared, people started attempting to buy it. At that point the exact nature of the substance started to change, and eventually turned into anything the buyer happened to be interested in."

so funny

I like how the See Also section includes "Philosopher's Stone"

Some editor's got the jokes.

my dad's told stories about playing with mercury with bare hands in science class as a kid

said it was one of the neatest substances he'd ever touched heh
