netanel rubin was back again at ccc for his second talk in 2 years on how vulnerable perl is, with a decent dose of trolling the perl community thrown in

he finished his talk by screaming STOP. USING. PERL. at the audience, the guy really should have smashed his laptop and stormed off, that would have made it perfect
so many of the ccc presenters are uncharismatic monotonic nerds so it's nice when you get someone like that who actually has a bit of flair for presenting

rotfl that's great

i love perl but only in theory

like, it's super fun to use for hobby projects but i would never use it for real work™
the only time I've used it was when i was working on SDA because it's what radix used and I wanted to be sure that if I walked away there would be people remaining who could maintain what I'd left behind

I just didn't get on with it at all
red chamber dream
probably because it doesn't really make sense as a computer language

it makes sense as a language language

which is interesting, but i don't think all that particularly useful
it's sort of the definition of the word 'clusterfuck' in my mind
clusterfuck 1. (n) perl
red chamber dream
it's basically a shitload of extra syntax to do stuff that the interpreter should just decide for you
red chamber dream
so yeah agreed

like if i'm writing a scripting language why the fuck do i care if my var is a scalar

i really, really don't ... but perl does

Got to leave work early and tomorrow morning's AGDQ is a block of Ratchet+Jak+Crash+Spyro back to back, i.e. a speedrun of my childhood.  Gonna be wonderfully lazy.
red chamber dream
heh i was telling tdk, this was the first agdq i totally forgot about until he reminded me

feels good
red chamber dream
i do want to check out a couple of the runs later though
sounds good

aren't they all very similar games
red chamber dream
crash isn't all that similar - it's more like an endless runner rather than a game where you can explore

the rest, yeah pretty similar 3d platformers
red chamber dream
jak 1 vs jak ii are VERY different though

jak ii is more like gta or something

I haven't cared about most of the marathon but like I said, that block tomorrow morning is basically all my favorite franchises in a row.

Quote from DJGrenola:

"Similar" depends on how stringent you're being.  I would say they're all fairly distinct but they're very much all products of their respective console generations.
i played rayman 2 of that era and a little bit of gex enter the gecko, not too much else in the 3d platformer genre though
didn't do mario 64 until the ds came along
I like turtles.
Spyro is probably the most typical of what you're thinking of, from the four I mentioned.  Jak was too but then like ark said, the sequels.
red chamber dream
i actually never played sm64 much. never owned it myself, so the only time i've played it is at friends' houses

i do want to play it in full sometime though

3d platformers, especially from 96-2000 are my favorite genre ever

cannot fucking wait for yooka-laylee
I like turtles.
Now that I'm thinking of it that sub-genre kind of died with the first Jak game didn't it?  At least, there weren't many more after that.
