I think you do understand liking or disliking if you have a favorite character.  I don't have to interact with them in order to feel some kind of emotional connection, be it positive or negative.  A well written character will have you liking them or hating them, imo.
I can't stand Meghan because she's a whiny brat.  She acts like this little princess that needs to ask Don what she can and can't do, without realizing that every time she does it he looks at her like she's an idiot.  I can't stand Campbell because he's a condescending asshole.

i like those aspects of megan though. she's a stuck-up little priss, and i love her for it. her mom's great too.

pete is fucking awesome. he's a condescending asshole, but he's also better at his job than anyone else in the company except maybe roger. i love pete, too.
red chamber dream
to me, if a character is interesting, i like the character
I think Pete could be good at his job and NOT be a condescending asshole, though. I also hate him for the way he treated Peggy.
Actually, most of the men are total slimeballs on this show.  They're constantly fucking and falling in love with every woman they meet.
Speaking of jobs, I've about had it with mine.  I'm so sick of people putting more effort into avoiding work than it would take to actually do the work, or fucking up royally every single day without any consequence.  They come up with the stupidest crap, and then when you politely and undeniably explain how stupid it is they get defensive.  They're like 10 year olds.  /rant

last ep of mad men was amazing btw. definitely my favorite series of the last 10 years.
I like it alot too but I don't think it's my fav.  I love Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and others.

sopranos and six feet under ain't from the last 10 years :)

i like mad men more than all the series you mentioned though, except sopranos which i haven't watched yet.
Has it been that long?  Shit.
red chamber dream
well, sopranos ended in 2007 but still
I stopped watching Sopranos when I was about 80% through them all because one of the episodes messed with me badly.  It was on my mind the second I got out of bed for days, and intrusive thoughts of it plagued me for a while.  I even had bad dreams over it.  I guess it was PTSD?  I can't think of any other thing I've watched that did that to me, not as an adult anyways.  I got over it and finished the series about a year later.
The whole mind-fuck about Sopranos is that the characters are lovable and hateable at the same time.  You laugh at their jokes and feel like you're friends with them, then all of the sudden they do terrible things.  It messes with you.
red chamber dream
those are always the best characters. mad men's the same way, although in a more "normal" way

Interesting, remember what episode that was/what happened in it? Six Feet Under had an episode like that, the hitchhiker episode, that occupied my mind for a long while after I saw it.

Over the last 10 years I'd say Breaking Bad and Mad Men have been the two best TV dramas by a pretty decent margin, I'd probably put breaking Bad slightly ahead but you can't really compare them. Best drama that's still running is definitely The Americans imo.

It was the episode where they murdered Adriana.  I really related to that character, and for some reason I didn't see it coming at all.

Yeah that was definitely one of the most heartbreaking episodes of the show. I think it was worse because it was Silvio who did it too because although you know he's a mobster he generally seemed more pleasant than most of the others (at leas as far as I remember from watching it 4 years ago), and then he's so contemptuous as he kills her.
