'Motherly Instinct' is a total myth in humans.  Plenty of mothers throw their babies in dumpsters.  Giving a shit about your offspring is learned in people.

instincts are what give us hunger in the first place, it doesn't mean we have to eat. if that's not scientifically considered an "instinct" then fine, i agree, we don't have instincts.

Reproduction isn't anywhere as instinctive in humans as it is most other animals. Hell, we don't even reproduce for the most part, we just fondle with each other's privates for pleasure.

Clearly you've never met a catholic.

i'm thinking of a more broader definition i learned in school i guess.

what you're talking about is more prevalent in other animals, you're right, but i don't see why us being able to overcome our instincts means we don't have them

Because that's the defintion of an instinct
red chamber dream
ok then we don't have them

Nah plenty of animals will do shitty things to their young too. Some individuals just don't handle it well.

I've never met an actual one, no. I don't think people who attend a Catholic church, then get trashed at parties are actual Catholics.

You'd be surprised!
Ironically, all the religious prudes I've met have been Protestant :V

I don't know why so many people pretend that they A) actually live by the principles of their faith, or B) actually pretend to WANT to live by the principles of their faith.

(...or sumthin like dat)
Well, are you anything like your friends and family, Op?

I wasn't referring to any kind of prudishness at all.

The joke was that catholics aren't supposed to use protection, sex is only for making babies.

True, so it sounds like it's a total myth all around, not just in humans.

the problem with terms like "instinct" is that there's a biological explanation behind that sort of thing, it's nothing mysterious
red chamber dream
talking about when people say "motherly instincts" and that sort of thing
When I think of 'instinct',  I think of spiders knowing how to spin webs, or other complex behaviors that they were born knowing how to do without having to be taught.

maybe in 300 years no one will even talk about stuff like that anymore because we'll just have pills to change our personalities however we'd like
I'll say this: humans are always striving to less of an organism and more of a product of the mind.
I think bug pharma is working on that as we speak.

I think that greys are people from the future that have figured out time travel.  If you think about it, that's what we would evolve into.  Big brains/heads, weak limbs, etc.

i hope so, would be funny

not like i'll be around to see humans evolve again so i really don't give a shit at all

Maybe maybe not, instinct is a difficult thing to judge when it comes to anything complex like that. But I imagine one's experience with their own parents affects any kind of parental motivations in any case.

Definitely. Well, at least the conscious part of it. That part doesn't give a shit about biological needs. It just wants to indulge in its interests.
red chamber dream
is that really true though? i mean doesn't everything that goes in the mind have to do with the physical body, more specifically the brain?
