Just as crazy people don't know they're crazy, stupid people don't know they're stupid. You present to them what science has learned and they don't understand it, and if they can't understand it then it must be faulty or untrue. The billions of people who DO understand it are either just pretending to understand it so nobody realizes how stupid they are, or it only makes sense to them because they're too stupid to really think it through. Add in the threat of eternal hellfire for believing that the world is 400,000 times older than the bible says it is, and you have even more stupidity. I've heard more than once that half of the US Congress believes that the earth is less than 10,000 years old. I wouldn't be surprised if it's true.
