If it's not the word of god, then why don't people hold it in the same regad as other not-the-word-of-god books, like Tom Sawyer or a Stephen King novel?  LOL I don't get it.

OK- I have a question. If one calls themself a catholic but they don't really adhere to or believe in any of the rules, how does it make them feel when they see catholics who DO follow the rules?  Do they admire those people or think they're crazy?

I still reckon that religion, and the inherent 'do this or burn in hell', was simply invented because the current (at that time) societal structure could no longer police the size of the population.

Why stop there?  Why not realize that the WHOLE THING was made up.

Isn't that what Quietus pretty much said when he said, "simply invented"?

Also, this thread is making my boring yearbook period more interesting, thanks.
It's been a long time since I went to school, and we certainly didn't have internet access in class.  How are you able to visit the forum while in class?
Also, I think I'm about to get banned from MDb.  A member there stated that MDb was the place for 'die-hard' metroid fans and I said it wasn't.  He basically called me stupid, so I told him that MDb forum was full of people who have played ONE metroid game before joining their forum and M2K2 doesn't have people like that, and that is why their forum has a gazillion members yet so much less activity than M2K2. I think I subconsciously WANT to get banned from there.
Don't bring them here, though!

Don't worry, I think most of them laugh at us for being so into the games (which makes it all the more strange that they are the die-hard ones).

I still can't get over the day when I argued that wall-jumping in Super Metroid wasn't an 'advanced' technique.  They basically said that they never use it because it has no use other than for 'advanced' things.

If you adhere to the rules because that's what you believe, that's not crazy. If you do it because - and only because - it is the rules, that's a bit crazy. Beliefs are personal, and modern society acknowledges that.

Modern society may acknowledge that beliefs are personal, but the church certainly does not.  So I'm still puzzled - if one's beliefs are in line with modern society and not the church, then why identify with the church?
Tradition, community, family ties. People pick and choose what they want from christianity and catholicism because of the ambiguity that's built up over the years through social evolution and whatnot. If you still think JC was a cool guy who had some pretty good messages, regardless of what else you believe, why bother labelling yourself as something equally meaningless, if not more so?
Yeah I just am unable to comprehend the whole 'pick-and-choose' idea when it comes to beliefs about existence, purpose, and meaning.  It seems to have no regard for truth.
Don't be mixing religion and solid truth. It's never pretty.

I think even religious people acknowledge there is no truth, only belief. It's actually a key point of Christianity - that faith is more important than knowledge.
Faith is belief's retarded cousin.
Is having faith in something the same as believing in it? I use them pretty synonymously in situations like this. If I'm wrong ark will probably tell me, he's pretty hot when it comes to linguistic stuff.
Faith is stronger than Belief.

I believe the neighbor man assaulted his wife again, because she ran out of their house screaming and crying, yelling for the people across the street to call the cops.

^This is an assumption.

I believe that my car will start when I turn the key while it's inside the ignition.  I have no reason to doubt, but it's not impossible that it won't start.

^This is a presumption.

I have faith in my best friend that he will do something I've asked him to do, and he's very very good at what he does, and he promised me he would do what I've asked him.

Faith and Belief can be synonymous.  Which would you have more "Faith" in?  A bridge made of wood that looks weathered, rotted, and about to fall over?  Or a bridge made of steel and concrete?  You would believe that the Steel and Concrete bridge would be more reliable.

One's Faith is only as reliable as what someone puts it in or who they leave it in the hands of.  And one reason a lot of Christians believe there is a tangible force behind what they believe in and pray for is that those prayers are answered, those needs are met and supplied, and questions are confirmed in an exact way (setting out a fleece).  But these are mere evidences of the miraculous.  If God chose to never answer a prayer of someone and they still believed in Him...  They are all the more blessed -- for having Faith.
I simply define faith as believing something without any evidence.  Your example about the friend could also be an assumption, since he has evidence about his friend's character based upon past events.
I think it's funny how religious people use logical/scientific reasoning when they conclude that they don't believe in telepathy, but they DO believe in prayer.  Then again, they do that with all of their religious beliefs - they seem to turn the reasoning that they use to determine what is and isn't true in the world.  They use this sense when they determine that there's no such thing as leprechauns and unicorns, but they completely abandon this reasoning when it comes to their religion.  I don't understand how one can do this without begin brainwashed or delusional.

Because leprechauns and unicorns aren't all-knowing deities that will punish you for not believing in them and/or not following their rules.
According to a poster at MDb, M2K2 forum is not worth the amount of time it takes to load.  The reason?  He didn't see any threads talking about how awesome Melissa Bergman is.  Seriously.
who's melissa bergman?

That other blond in Other M. I'm not gonna go into any detail about her, since it involves some major spoilers.

I swear, I should just start lurking around the MDb forums so that I can find some stupid crap that's worth making fun of here at M2k2.

Yeah, if they value "fandom and excitement" over "speedrunning, gameplay exploits, sequence breaking, and everything else in between." Opium, you know what I'm talking about Wink

Oh, in year book designing the year book and editing the pictures are all done on the computer. The only part of yearbook where you aren't on the computer is when you're out and about taking pictures.
