I've been using 4megaupload.com to download whole albums, or sometimes even entire discographies. I only get music free if I've already paid for it a long time ago but the disc/tape was lost or stolen and I'm just replacing it (why should I pay for it twice?), or if I really don't like it very much so I never would have paid for it anyways. I like how some of the people sharing files even include the album cover art, and they have the folders and file names already formatted for iTunes.
Now that ACTA is here, I'll probably get caught pretty soon.
I was raised pirating things though. When I got my first CD player I asked my dad where to get music to put on CD's, and he showed me how to use limewire. When I got my first iPod I moved on to warez and torrent sites to get what I needed. Most people I've talked to think that I'm pretty terrible for never paying for any music in my entire life lol. Whenever people give me iTunes cards for my birthday, I just sell them for $5 less than what they're worth at school.
It is kinda lame to NEVER pay for music. I don't even wanna know what you do about video games.
Actually I do buy good games. I've never pirated an indie game, I've payed for all my multiplayer games (kinda have to in order to play the multiplayer aspect). I've bought a few single player games, like Oblivion, Fallout 3, Black and White 2, etc. I do pirate games to try them out first though to see if they're utter crap (Just Cause 2, I'm looking at you).

a true american.
Not sure if this is a bad thing or not, but, thanks?
omigosh! I have only one indie game and I did not pay for it. I feel really bad because it is such an awesome freakin game! I'm definitely gonna go pay for it later today.

It was just a wisecrack on your opportunistic capitalism. It reminds me of that Woody Allen joke about the gold pocket watch: "My grandfather -- on his death bed -- sold me this watch."
Ah yeah I think I remember you recommending it awhile back. I love indie games quite a bit. Soldat, Minecraft, Audiosurf (now on steam), Recettear (Also on steam now), Cave Story (on the Wii now too).

They have to use their own cash to finance their development, self-employment.
many don't even do it for a living, but just as a hobby. I've been working more or less on games since I've been 14 and never thought that would make me special and that I should call myself (indie) developer.
indie games are a sub-genre, kind of. There's your main-stream games, such as Metroid and Call of Duty, and then you have your indie games (not main stream, single developer, etc like Dyna posted) such as minecraft. All are video games, but it helps to describe them better.
In my case, I refer to "indie developers" as to actual developers without proper funding, to better create a catalog of the diverse types of genres, terms and stuff like that.
