I guess my main point would be that I don't understand why you think that there would/could not be any purpose in life without something to 'work on' because I could sit here from now until the end of time coming up with guesses that have nothing to do with working on anything.

EDIT:  maybe there is no purpose....


If there is no god there is no ultimate purpose, and then the it becomes whatever the hell you want it to be. My purpose is to live a good life because I figure that I'll only get one shot.

ok yeah this is what really gets me. so what if there's no ultimate purpose? how would an ultimate purpose affect you anyway? when you go to the store to buy milk are you thinking about the ultimate purpose in life? even if you want to eliminate world hunger, are you thinking about some ultimate purpose in life? no, you just want to do something to eg benefit humanity. the concept of an ultimate purpose is totally ridiculous.
