Atheists arent really the ones who have something to prove.  They're not the ones with the outrageous claims.  In fact, some atheists are even hesitant to call themselves 'atheists' because they dont want to be burdened with an 'ism'.  They're just humans - that don't believe in god(s). 
I also laugh at people who say atheism is just another religion.  LOL!  Yeah, and I suppose 'not collecting stamps' is a hobby.

You're right, there is a long long ways to go.  It seems like no matter how many beliefs that science basically nullifies, people have this amazing capacity to rationalize and twist their perception to keep it alive.  They are worshipping the 'God of the Gaps' by placing the proof of gods existence within the gaps of our understanding: "We don't understand how that works, so it must be GOD!"  Trouble is, the gaps are getting smaller and smaller, and those who are not squeezed out of them and abandon religious/superstitious/supernaturla beliefs are becoming more and more radical like a cornered animal.  I am afraid that there is a high possibility that the next world war will be based almost solely upon religion.  Religion may not have shown us just how atrocious it can be yet.

Religion is not "belief in god" but a set of principles that govern one's life. So strong atheism can be a religion. Strong atheism meaning people who believe there is no god.

People who simply lack belief are usually called agnostic. Sometimes there's no clear distinction, so I like to use:

Theism - Belief in god
Agnosticism - No belief
Atheism - Belief there is no god

I can't really agree with that definition, because if that's true then ALL people are religious.  I think religion has to have dogma.

well ... you're an idiot then. gnosticism implies knowledge. theism implies belief. so if you're atheist, you don't believe there's a god, whereas if you're agnostic you would say you don't know that there is a god.

those are pretty different things entirely, so it's possible to be an agnostic atheist, ie one who doesn't believe there is a god and also doesn't know that there's a god.

the dangerous ones are gnostic theists, ie those who claim to know there's a god. that's insane.

or even gnostic atheists ... i mean i don't believe there's a god but i don't claim to know that as an absolute fact.

Man is sinful by nature. We follow the whims of our flesh - which is selfishness.  Doing away with sin and selfishness is like getting closer to God or a higher spiritual awareness.  Without a "religion" or (as 072 said it) a set of principles that govern one's life - nothing will get better for anyone.  But if everything is survival of the fittest then nothing matters.  Everything we gain and do in this life is for nothing.  But if there is a purpose to our lives we have a reason to live, and if we've lived it to the fullest, then we don't have to fear death.
