it's for showing off your collection, yes. just doesn't work too good with MAL, because everyone downloads everything anyways.
greenmanalishi isn't too far off. MAL has helped me quite a lot to find shows to watch years ago when I was new to anime, and people I know still frequently use it to look up stuff and share the information they get with their friends (including myself).
although the list itself is still good for keeping track what shows you're watching and on what episode you are on.
