i remember playing a used copy of pokemon stadium 2 at my friend's house a day after the game came out. i'm pretty sure some people finish the game quickly and decide to return it.

Perhaps the whole wii phenomenon (the simplification of gaming and the huge acquisition of a new market) has nintendo feeling overconfident and made them think they were incapable of making a bad call.

Maybe, but I really think that Sakamoto is the problem here.  He needs to get away from Metroid for good.  It started with Fusion and his dumb story.  Telling the player what to do with the linearity.  Then Zero Mission, Manga cutscenes and crap(Quit the storytelling)...WTF.  Zero Mission is a bad remake of Metroid and it's diffculty comared to Metroid is pathetic(He added his bullshit linearity to it also).  And now Other M.  Forcing his personal imaginary girlfriend on us and ruining her character for good.  Difficulty is pathetic and the controls are terrible.

Sakamoto is a jackass and is running Metroid into the ground.

i guess we're fucked because it is either him or Retro for Metroid nowadays. the only way to get a new non-Retro game without him would be for nintendo to fire him.
So far, I have yet to have a death due to auto-aim, Boss fights have been fun, I've ignored the made for Japan characterization, enough items are cleverly hidden, I'm looking forward to a hard mode run, and people are already finding shortcuts and new speed running techniques.

Aside from Samus going all mushy to appeal to the home market Other M has been a great game. People are overreacting horribly to change and it's easy to tell that.

nah, he is a cool guy.
and all metroid games are linear/non-linear depending on the point of view...
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
The problem here though is there is always one path, with no deviations, until the end. Even Fusion had parts where there was a few different rooms to go through.

Maybe my anger was showing through a little too much there.  I take back the jackass statement, but he is running it into the ground, no doubt.

Yeah, Metroid('86) and Other M are the same when it comes to linearityd'oh!  You know what I was saying, come on man...seriously?  Don't try to make a side discussion about the definition of linearity and what I meant, please.  It's pretty clear and I do not intend to partake in said discussion.
I did watch some youtube about it, including the final boss chapter, I have no problem with that since I knew the game isnt for me before it was even out.
It was very remarkable for me so far how monotonous and boring Samus's voice-acting is, no matter she had a hard time or not, it always sounded like she was bored so far. It gives me the feel that it was designed by unmatured people. Just wanted to bring this aspect in. As for combat and controls, you don't really need my opinion.

Personally, I think Metroid as a series is done.  The exploration aspect is over.  Another game like Super will never happen again...we will be told where to go from now on which is not Metroid to me.  I have been a long time Metroid fan for a long time and I will no longer just buy because it is Metroid.  Other M is showing where they are taking the series and I hate it.

Yep. It is sad to say but it is how mentality is working today, the game is not designed how a passionate designer wants it to be but how the business wants it to be, it shall be easy to pick up and casual-gamers-safe, since those are the biggest target. As much as Metal Gear and Deus Ex are dead now. I predict those upcoming iterations will be something different, using humble words.
I was highly amused by the whole "need permission to use the varia suit" thing.

i know
I find myself bouncing between enjoying the game and hating it immensely. There are times where I'll run into an enemy or puzzle that is just annoying, cheap, and anything but fun. Other times I have a ton of fun with the combat and enjoy exploring the environments.

So I guess I'm slightly disappointed, but still somewhat enjoying it.

I've started to think of Other M as a Metroid game in the same way Mario Kart is a Mario game. It helps, a little.

I would not mind Retro giving 2d Metroid a shot at all.  A Metroid 2 re-envisioning would be perfect (it also takes place after the prime series).  They would just need the overall mission...kill Metroids and they could make a whole new game.  Keep it non-linear and make it a challenging world.

Add areas and a few new powerups.

New items
-the grapple beam with also a grapple like lasso feature(MP3)for some type of shelled creatures. doors, etc.  The lasso feature could be pressing ZR for grapple and pressing X to whip back.  Would be a cool feature I think.
-Gravity boots-  allowing you to run on the ceiling and through water.

Anyway I think this Super Metroid 2 could be amazing, especially with Retros level design.  The environments would need to be varied with a hot, cold, cavernous and many other area types. More areas than Super Metroid and Larger.

The cold or Snow area could have been a Chozo research area or something because they knew Metroids were vulnerable to the cold.  There could also be some badass Chozo technology there(Suit upgrades and Ice beam)

Another thing would be the map.  There should be one but no items or locations of anything would be shown.  Also, your location on the map would not be present(so none of this you've been here color).  Getting lost is a real threatTwisted Evil

Anyway just a few thoughts, sorry for rambling on.  Just dreaming of the perfect Metroid I guess.
I tried returning it to Gamestop for a refund (lol). Guess I'll just treat Other M in the same way my girlfriend treats the CDI Zelda games.

Nintendo seems to think it's bad for players to get stuck (which is what open exploration of Super can do to beginning players, but the ironic part is people have gotten stuck on these where's waldo minigames. Exploration is dead because today's gamers need instructions handed to them on a silver platter or it's too hard.

Hehe, why dont you think about it just as an iteration of fusion?

It is called 'modern gamedesign', whenever a dev mentions 'modern' dont expect much.

Did she play the CDI games? If not...

GANNON-BANNED.

Seriously though... I believe this game is getting hated on too much. I give the developers cool points for including Phantoon and Nightmare. Its not that bad. I just believe the Where's Waldo minigames should be gone and the voice actors should be shot.

At worst, its better than getting ANOTHER mini game collection or fitness game. (Wii Party for the epic fail)

I think he meant how it is an action game.

Spot on argument, we should start with Samus first.

As shown by all the times when a quarter of the screen is covered with instructions on how to use the ability you need to get through the area you're in.

The weird lab director lady should be next. I could barely understand a word she said during that one long cutscene where she explains everything that is going on.

EDIT: The others were OK though.

some abilities do require some explanation though so removing that would be a bad idea.

what i agree that should be gone is the whole linearity aspect. at least if they don't want it gone to prevent less experienced players to get lost and stuck, they should put an option for "guided gameplay". turn it on, you get the linear progression. turn it off, you get a completely open game with no hints and only roadblocks requiring items.
It sounds like you are suggesting making two completely different games on one disk, LOL.
