Well atleast the Heavens to Metroid guy got it right.

I like the game for what it is -- the style of gameplay and the challenges in it.

The story doesn't complement the game. I for one don't acknowledge it in the Metroid storyline (silly? I don't care).

The guy talks as if he had it all figured out and that people are blind to the merits of the game and are making useless controversy.
I agree with damn near everything there. (slashed text excluded)

The controversy really is pointless though. His point that we have no leg to stand on for our initial perception of Samus is indeed true.
We may not like her characterization, but this IS the first time they tried to flush it out. They'll likely attempt it again, and probably do it "better" than before. But we can't change the game as is, so complaining is utterly pointless.

If you take it from his POV, it all MAKES SENSE. That doesn't mean it's GOOD.

Hell I hate how Samus is now as well, but I'm not going to blow it out of proportion like most people want to.

It isn't pointless.  If they understand people don't like it they will change it to fit our needs since we are the buyers.

No it isn't true.  We do have a leg to stand on because we are the buying public and what we say as whole is what matters.  Sales will be bad for this game and they should take note or else Metroid will completely die because people will stop buying.

It should be the last if they want sales to increase again.

Complaining is not pointless.  It's how changes happen and I think it will affect the next Metroid game.  People complained about Prime 2 and look what happened...the complaining wasn't anywhere near Other M levels.

Not to me, not at all.

Yeah, but you're HUDD.
You actually think Metroid, as a series, should die after this game.

i should remember you that, only because we buy the games, don't mean we have any authority to change the history or anything else in the game...

i think a lot of the flak this game is receiveing is because, as it turned out, samus is not the terminatrix a lot of ppl (mainly ppl that got into metroid on super or prime 1) thought she was...

she continues to be a bad-ass space pirate nightmare army of one... it's just that she do have some inner problems (that, even in other M, she don't share with anyone there, mind you)

for me, it adds to the character...

Think he means more that although we told ourselves that Samus had a specific personality based on the previous games and all formed our own personal versions of it, in truth only a few games in the series have done anything to flesh out who Samus really is before Other M came out. The Samus a lot of people perceived beforehand is not the same one that was presented to them, and there is where one of the biggest controversies about the game comes from based on what I've seen. Personally I'm not as surprised as others are since both Fusion and the Manga (which as far as I knew had been confirmed as canon, although it seems a lot of people are denying that after Other M came out.) sort of pointed to her being like this, or at least that's how I interpreted them.

I've said before that I don't have much of an issue with how Samus was potrayed. I'll admit it isn't perfect, yes, but overall this interpretation is close enough to what I expected it to be based on my own preconceived image of her to the point where those few flaws don't bother me that much.

LOL.  I hope it continues but goes back to its roots.  I know I am very negative about this game but damn man I was really excited and it really was disappointing to say the least.

It's because we buy the games in the franchise that it even exists.  There have been plenty of examples of products ceasing to exist because of poor sales.  They should cater to the customers.  They wouldn't dare start giving Mario inner monologues about how he is attached to a goomba and make him tremble in fear at the sight of Bowser Jr...it won't sell and people would be pissed.  It's just that Sakamoto is living in his own little fantasy land where he thinks everyone will love everything he makes.

BTW, has anyone else seen this  http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/bt/benzaie/5-second-games/27881-ben-metroid-other-m-in-5seconds  funny!

Benzaie is pretty funny.

i didn't even have time to form an idea of what was samus' personality because i was so busy running and sequence breaking the games (but then, i got into metroid fully in like 2004). then i read the manga and after that i kinda saw coming what was up in other m as it progressed.
i really think the manga should have been bundled with ZM. it is the only way to prepare yourself for other m a bit.
I think part of the problem with the manga is that there is no official version other than the original Japanese one. Any others come have been translated from there, and as we know, translations can sometimes botch the original intention of a story.

But yeah, that may have helped a little and it would expose more players to Samus' backstory since I doubt every Metroid player goes around the internet trying to find it and read it. If it was given to us right away it may be a different story, although I still haven't read the Other M manual yet since the game patched a lot faster than I expected and never got around to it. (Basically, not everyone reads what comes with a game either.)
Just throwing this out there because it was mentioned to me:  Nintendo seems to have thrown Sakamoto out to the forefront over Other M.  Peculiar, no?

Not impossible
just highly unlikely
Not really. Game directors are often at the forefront. Sakurai for SSB, Miyamoto for... a shit ton, but noteably Occarina of Time, Pikmin, and SMG.
Who's going to talk bad about Miyamoto?

No one. I'm simply disproving your point that Sakamoto is in a unique position.

Alright.
I played through part of the beginning, and I wasn't impressed at all.  I thought it would've done better as a CG movie, even though that's pretty much what it is.
Definitely worth a read and a thought.
awful game. genuinely dreadful.

thank goodness I bought Halo Reach in the same outing.

It makes me happy when people remember to mention Fusion when they're talking about Other M ^^

I hate Halo 3 from what little I've played, but everything I hear about Reach sounds awesome.
That's two 360 exculsives I like the look of.
I've bought every non-portable-console Metroid on day 1, until I actually decided to pass on Other M altogether. I simply don't want my perception of Samus ruined. With the forced personality, all they've managed to do is alienate many Metroid fans. Take IGN's 'Killing Samus' for example. Although the comments are about 50/50 pro-con, the article proves that there's been an overall net loss for the Metroid franchise. Does anyone remember bitching about Samus not having a personality or not being human enough before Other M? NO...because Samus was anything/everything any gamer wanted her to be. If it's not broken, don't fix it!

Thanks for the confirmation DJG. I wanted to believe in and play the game, but I'm convinced the negatives would permanently tarnish the majestic Metroid image I hold so dear!

not to mention they structured the game's sequence after the most hated style in the series (heavily linear like Fusion)
as i said some time ago, this game is not going to expand the fanbase and attract any new people and it will instead alienate fans from every group, be it regular fans or speed runners.
I could recommend it to someone who hasn't played Metroid before.  You can't get lost, you won't understand the story, but the combat is pretty fun.
