Star Fox 64 is also 30 minutes long.

well, depending on how well you know the game, super metroid can vary from 30 minutes to 17 hours (my first run)
Hated by all
You're making me think of erasing my memory just to play those games with a fresh experience.

And on topic...

I thought this game had a LOT of untapped potential, and I guess most of you would agree in this department (in various aspects, but for me, it was the story). In the end, it just basically felt like Wanderers from Ys (look that game up or watch the Let's Play from Deceased Crab, complete with I Wanna Be The Guy elements) in a sci-fi setting, complete with music inspired by Alien. It didn't feel like a complete waste, but I think I let my hype mode get the best of me on this one.

Now that I think about the ending, didn't any of you have a strange feeling that Melissa bore a strange resemblance to SkyNet and the final antagonist from Tales of Symphonia?
Maybe I could see Skynet, but Ydrassil?  I'm not seeing that one.  She wasn't oppressed by the other scientists there.  She was revered by them since he held all the cards.  When she thought she was betrayed, she snapped.  In Symphonia, Ydrassil snapped when Martel, his sister died.
So...has anyone actually figured out what the deal is with that whole avalanche scene?  It seems completely and utterly random to me. I got through it without dying on my first playthrough, but later attempts have all been a mixed bag.  Is there something/anything that you can actually do to absolutely prevent dying?  Sometimes I die even though I haven't hit any obstacles and the snow appears to still be quite a ways behind me.  Other times, I hit a couple of obstacles and the snow is right on top of me, but I survive.  It's almost as if they are trying to make you think that there is something/anything you can do to affect the outcome of this segment of the game, when in fact it is completely random.

Morph Ball and you'll make it 100%
Yup, Morph Ball all the way.

I don't know why, but I decided to read that Destructoid article discussing the story.  I regret every moment of it.  It's all about how the game 'hurt his perceptions'.

Samus' "higher calling" moment?  That was near the end of Zero Mission, wasn't it?  Also, I got the impression that she took her Power Suit off at the end so she wouldn't damage the helmet.

i never had a problem with the avalanche. to me it seemed very easy to just run and don't stop to avoid it and never died to it.

I've never died on the avalanche either, morph ball or no. I think you just have to make sure you run straight at the bottom to trigger speed boost so she can dramatically shinespark out of the way. Also, how could she get killed by snow? I mean, really? Yes an avalanche is a lot of force, but she's stood up to worse. And to get out, just spam bombs. It's just snow, it'll vaporize.

Speaking of the avalanche, that room is blocked off by snow afterwards. So what if you miss the two items in there? Are they permanently missable?
Good question.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I would imagine that you could just space jump in from the top end if anything.

The items in that room are not missable.  You're required the pickup the E-Tank, and the Missile Tank can be gotten later (They throw in a Grapple Point afterwards).

Also, she can get crushed by an elevator, so I'm sure an avalanche could kill her too.
I like to go fast!
Yes the avalanche can kill you.  I got stuck on the right side near the drop,  and the snow ran into me and I died.  And yep, Grapple to get back over it.

i died the first time, but it was very easy to outrun it, even if you don't morph...

Really? Does picking it up trigger the Wave Beam event? Is it not skipable in a low%? If so that would make two Bob e-tanks.
Has someone left that area without getting the e-tank to test whether or not that is the trigger for wave?
Phoenix
I'm going to do a low% normal run after I finish my current 100% run, so I'll test it then. If it isn't the E-tank, we'll have to see what the trigger point is for the Wave Beam. Maybe you don't even have to go to the very top of the avalanche room.
I'm very interested to know exactly what the trigger is, because I hate how they set up that backtracking the way they did.  It's retarded to go and visit an area for such a reason.

The lowest you can get is 3% (I've done it).  The door is locked until you pick up that E-Tank.  That's without trying a skip of course.
The door leading to the avalanche slope?
Phoenix
They probably force 2 tanks on you because otherwise the Queen Metroid will kill you before you can lay a power bomb. In normal she drains about two tanks before it goes off. As for the forced missile... who knows.

Yeah, you have to pick it up.  The Forced Missile...eh...it comes in hand.  I still think 18 missiles is the best choice for a speedrun since you could do the first part of the Queen without Concentrating.

You mean 3 missiles for each Metroid? I just blast them with supers, since that's a one shot deal and concentration easily allows me to get back to full power. Firing three missiles six times might take more time than 6 supers and two concentrations because of how fast those can regen missiles for you. (I'd have to check) Plus there is less room for mistakes since it leaves other Metroids less time to interfere with blasting one of their buddies.

If there is more than 1 Metroid, it switches to Seekers if you try and use a Super.

You can Concentration without wasting time in between waves of Metroids. You have to anyway in hard mode or a low%.
