Alright, so I just got the Super Missiles.

Up until now, I loved this hack. Everything about it was deviously clever but not ridiculous. No pixel-perfect shinesparks or random "jump into a pit of spikes and bomb around, hoping you find something before you die."

Oh, wait.

For an expansion or an optional item that'd be one thing, but what the hell? Making a mandatory ability only acquirable by making a blind leap into a pit of spikes--without even an upgrade dot on the map--then bombing a single block on the wall no different than any others, while praying your energy tanks last long enough against a never-ending barrage of spiky pain? I never would have found those damn things if I didn't break down and look at a map. Ridiculous.

Is there some other, saner, less game-breaking way to do it, or is that just a sole incident of terrible game design in an otherwise excellent hack?
Getting that super missile tank first is definitely a sequence break, congratulations.

The first super missile tank you are supposed to get is:

at the top of spore spawn's room

If you find yourself getting stuck and feel like giving up:

Unless you have ALOT of patience I suggest watching you-tube to see how to get the varia and how to do the hells run.  The hell's run seems insanely hard the first time you do it but with practice it gets easy.  After that the game really takes off.

I.. don't think I fought Spore Spawn yet. Huh. >_>

Wait, so was I supposed to have Supers before getting Bombs or something? O_o

You can't get any super packs without bombs. Once you get bombs, go back to spore spawn (brinstar) just before the wall-jump boots. Own him and get your legit first super missle pack. Then go do the other stuff and stuff.

Ah... I didn't screw myself over by going to Kraid first, did I?
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
You should have Morph, Missiles, Wall-Jump, Bombs, Super Missiles, and possibly Charge Beam.  You then head to Kraid to open the way to Norfair, for Hell's Run.

I've got all of that but the charge beam. Is Hell's Run possible with three energy tanks? I stop to restore my health at the .. geega...zeb.. hell, I can't keep track of which is which. The pipe bugs. But despite that I can't get past the second or third walljump area.

(Though one time I died on the elevator coming back up. Wtf <_<)
What'd you say?
You normally have 3 e-tanks. So yeah you can do it, i usually have 15-25 energy left.

You are supposed to charge off those bugs.
Here's a good demo of how to do the hells run

it helps to use save states throughout, be sure to toggle between save slots

...Seriously? I died waiting for the final door to open. Wow. Okay, at least that shows that I can almost do it ... just a little more practice... I've been using missiles instead of supers, maybe that'll help.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
The above video is OK, but I could add some further tips to make it a little easier for you:

  • You can stand on the edge of the pipe and kill the bugs without all of the jumping around.
  • It's quicker to jump and morph into the hole at the end, rather than waiting to bomb-jump.
  • Just after the above morph, ignore the obvious temptation to wall-jump of the left-hand wall first.  Jump off the right-hand one, and you'll reach the top in two jumps, rather then three.
Time bomb set get out fast!
Y'know, I used to be proud of finding that super missile sequence break myself.  Now I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only one who originally did it the "right" way....
What'd you say?
And which SM sequence break is that? I just always kill Spore Spawn for it.
Head east from the elevator that first takes you to brinstar, into that green area.  Eventually you'll find a spike pit that has a hidden SM in it.  You can get it before the spore spawn SM, but it's kinda hard to jump back out of the spike pit.

Pipped...

Check [noembed][url= vid[/url][/noembed] from 2:35 to see the expansion.

I know in the vid he already has Super Missiles, but that expansion can be collected before any of the others.
What'd you say?
That's usually the item I collect after Spore Spawn. I just always figured the door to there was locked.
What'd you say?
I'm on my second playthrough and I can't seem to remember where all the chozo statues are, can someone give me a hint for this one in Brinstar? I have the one in the south east corner and I also have the one where you have to unlock the green gates to free the bird. (ectocoon are drachora?)
There are 2 of them in the Kraid area.  One is in the lower right part after going through a spiky morph ball tunnel.  To get the other one, you have to find a hidden morph ball tunnel on the right side of one the far right shafts, then uncover the chozo statue with a power bomb.

That is the most disgusting lie I have ever seen, I hate the metroids. To fast and I can't shake them off.

That's easier said than done, I always abuse savestates in tourian while playing this though.

that super missile pack can only be picked up after beating spore spawn.  and since I intended the player to walljump above sport spawn right away and see they needed bombs that is the intentional first pack.  as for that spike pit pack, I too am also surprised at how many people don't think the obvious and check above spore spawn.
I guess SMR has taught you the hard way that as much as expecting people to do the obvious is doomed to disappoint you most of the time. :P

I wasn't lying. Tourian isn't that hard if you know what to do:

- The Metroids can't latch onto (or damage) you while you're screw attacking.
- The easiest way to shake them off is to lay some bombs at the peak of a Spring Ball jump, unmorph, jump up to the bombs, and fire up immediately after they explode. Works like a charm.
- Don't use super missiles on the Metroids, because they won't drop anything (their drops are HUGE).

Using these tactics (and some skill and luck) I can make (and have made) it to the end of the Metroid gauntlet with practically full health and missiles with no savestates/rewinds.

(And the escape sequence isn't as hard as it looks either.)
