Super Metroid Life v1.0
by Nevyn193
Release date: Feb 20, 2011
nevyn193@hotmail.com

Author's description:
This is a complete Super Metroid hack that will hopefully be
fun to play and have a few surprises. In the begining many
areas are similar to the original but as I progressed as a
Super Metroid builder the quality of the rom-hack got better
and better.

The map is about the same size as the original (same amount
of rooms). Difficulty is set just a little higher so it's
audience is more towards casual players with some harder
parts for 100%.

Thread title:
Works on UH btw.
A new full hack, you say?

May have to give this a go in a bit.
So I decided to give this a shot, and although as you said the early areas are similar to the original game, once you get the first item or two things take a turn and offer some interesting changes. Thought there were a few times where I had gone out of order, but so far it seems I'm progressing down the path that I'm supposed to.

ITEMS
I did get a Power Bomb as my second or third item and I'm not entirely sure if this is intended or not, but it's not like I could use the thing at the time so I don't think it's a big deal in the end. It is in one of the rooms to the right of where you first get the Grapple Beam. (Nice fake out with that one, by the way. I was completely set on it being the standard Morph Ball right there)

Oh, and that X-Ray Scope is taunting me, I swear. I know exactly where it is and thought I had found a way to get over to it, but at best I managed to get about 1/3 to 1/2 way down that walkway by quickly hopping before the tiles crumble. I WILL get it before the end, somehow...

CURRENT POSITION
I feel kinda... bad I guess... in that it feels like I shouldn't be down in Maridia yet since I'm not only suitless, but I haven't gone anywhere near Norfair yet. Something about this feels like I'm doing something I'm not supposed to, but seeing as the terrain has been kind to me and has allowed me to travel through the area with only a few slip ups I'm starting to think I'm supposed to be here at this point. Just got the Spring Ball and have taken care of Phantoon at this point in the game.

Overall though I've been pleasantly surprised with this one. Other than a few minor tiling issues here and there I haven't come across anything that feels like it was built wrong or has gotten me stuck, and exploring this world you've laid out before us takes me back to what Metroid was all about back in the day, and that element is a HUGE plus in this hack's favor in my eyes. There's definitely a feeling of linearity behind the scenes, so to speak, but to tell you the truth I don't really care because it's still been a heck of a ride so far regardless of that.

Can't wait to continue on with this a bit later. I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking for something to play right now, since there have been a few surprises and the level design seems spot on from what I've encountered so far.
Yoshi is back
I might give it a go after I'm done my hack which I'm having ONE final problem with before releasing it (no its not Apocalypse. Its a mini hack you can play while waiting) other then that yeah. I shall be playing this.

How i can get this item?, according to the X-Ray Scope, that's an Energy Tank

Yoshi is back
There might be an "Air. Fool X-ray" Tile somewheres. I don't know though where asI'm not playing but I think it might be that.
E-TANK
There's a hidden morph ball tunnel right about where that fish is that will let you get in there. Might be a tile above, but it's on that wall right where you are.

Made some more progress, and for the most part my comments before continue to hold true, although there are a few minor design choices that I don't agree with. Not enough to detract from the hack as a whole though, so it may be more my playing style than anything else.

Currently stuck with trying to figure out how to get to either Draygon or Ridley. Know where both of them are, but can't figure out how to get to either of them with what I've got equipped. A good chunk of Marida seems like it's blocked off from me by a few grey doors, so I could just be missing something.

Have nearly all of the items minus the Space Jump, Ice, Wave, and Plasma. Unless I want to try some IBJs in two areas, where I know I could get through if I spent enough time in either area, I need anything but Plasma to proceed at this point from what I can tell, unless I can get into the better part of Maridia somehow.

Oh, and I can't believe how easy it was to get X-Ray once I had the speed booster and wasn't being stupid about it. Didn't think of that the first time I got to its room.

One more question: where's the entrance to Tourian?

Don't know. I haven't gotten to it but nothing stands out at the moment. It's either really well hidden, isn't in the game (doubtful), or else I haven't come across the entrance as of this time.

And wow... I feel really stupid with my problem traveling through Maridia. Go me for not recognizing the same signs in one of the Maridia rooms that were there in one of the rooms on the way to the Gravity Suit.

Nice :)

When you publish something you think that they are either going to like it or hate it. With family problems and alot of crap at work taking the time and building this rom hack have been invaluable to me. I estimate that I have invested 250 hours since August and it was worth every one of them.

I considered redoing the entire Criteria since it's quality is only ok and not that good but I decided to leave it like this. The power bomb in blue Brinstar is there to trigger an event that wakes up enemies in criteria. With a bit of coding you could surely fix this but I decided to call it finished. (In normal Super Metroid the trigger is Morph ball + Missiles)

Ahh.. Look for the statues at the same location as the original.
Yeah, overall I'd say you did a great job in capturing the essence of what made Metroid so great in the first place. The game's not too much harder than the original, although early on when you don't have Varia the enemies are a bit tougher since it looks like they still deal the same amount of damage that they normally do, and we're finding them earlier than you do in the original so they're a bit more deadly. But even with some of the rooms being identical to the original game, the map layout is completely different and there are plenty of new designs in there to make this feel like a new adventure, which is one of the main points of hacking in my mind.

Don't always need to bust out a group of brand new tilesets or completely change up the coding to have a game that's fun, and from what I've seen up to this point I'd say you hit most of the marks to make this a pretty entertaining experience.

Still can't find them, some screenshots would be OK, since i defeated all the bosses and Mother Brain is the only thing left for complete the hack.

Check for a hidden power bomb passage in the Crateria "main street" room next to the landing site. Took me quite a while to find that one as well, but it does show up with X-Ray so it's not entirely hidden like I was beginning to think before I found it.

Anyway, just finished it myself:

I was actually quite surprised at my ending. I knew I was close, but not THAT close to getting everything. Given that this is the closest I've come to getting 100% on a hack, I may end up going back in eventually to look for those last few expansions.

Looking back now that I've completed this, I think this is one of the more fun hacks I've played in quite a while, partially because it rarely frustrated me like some of the other ones I've played that either go crazy with the enemies, have locked doors that force you to go all the way around again to get back to where you were, or something along those lines. It may not try too much that is new, but it didn't really do much wrong either and stayed true to the Metroid formula of putting exploration first. Other than the comments I made before where early on you have to pay more attention to the enemies (one time, for instance, I was running full speed down a corridor and didn't know a crab would be in my path, ran right into it and died immediately because I only had one E-Tank at that point) the game plays very close to the original Super Metroid in terms of difficulty and maneuvering around the world.

So in the end, a solid, well built, and entertaining hack. It has a lot of positive elements and barely any negative ones, and for me that means it's one I'll probably come back to one day and run through again, something I'd consider a success.

To find the statues try bombing the wall on the opposite side of the "wave-gate". If I make a new version I'll improve this in some way.

Happy you found it entertaining.

Maybe someone will make a Let's Play Smile
Hey man, good job on this hack.  I've been waiting forever for a new hack that was worth playing.  I know you said it was roughly the same size as the original, but it seems to me like it is significantly bigger.  I dunno maybe I'm just crazy.

Any way I was wondering...
Is there any way to get the Space Jump?  Or is it just there to taunt us?

Path to statues:

Spoiler for Space jump:
You can shot a super missile through the wall
I actually figured it out without the spoiler but thank you anyway.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention that Space Jump gave me such a hard time when I got there, but I figured it out after a few minutes.
I had tried turning off the wave beam to see if I could shoot the wall and find a hidden passage, only to see my Plasma beam go through the hole and hit the switch. Sadly enough, it took me another minute or so before I realized that I should do the same thing with a Super. Not sure what I was thinking there.

Missed 2 missile packs somewhere but I don't see myself going through again and looking for it.  I forgot to take a screenshot of the time but I got the percentage shot...
Yoshi is back
So, I started to play this and I'm stuck in Crateria. I need Supers to continue cause there are either Super missile blocks, doors or Grey doors blocking my way. I'm trying to go through the area in Crateria with the very fast moving flyer enemies. That isn't working they are too fast. I need either Ice beam or Screw attack.

CURRENT ITEMS
I have 3 E-tanks, 3 Power bombs, 24 missiles, Morphball, bombs and Grapple.

BOSSES BEATEN

I have beaten Kraid.

If anyone could help me as to where to go next I'd be grateful, thank you! Lookin good so far Nevyn193
