As I said above, I felt the exact same way for a time.  In fact, I put it on the shelf for several months (see my review) on p. 25.  Finally, I gave in and looked up how to get the first couple e-tanks, and how to get to the first couple bosses.  Once you get past this part and get a little less underpowered relative to the enemies, and can explore with a little more abandon, the game really gets better IMO, to the point where it ended up being one of my favorite hacks of all time.  But, admittely, the first time I sat down and played for like two hours, getting only bombs and a couple missile tanks and loading states constantly, I was really disappointed despite how good it looked.

Eris takes some getting used to, but, the rewards in the end are worth it.

Summed up my thoughts almost exactly, just use the map to find your next item. After that hopefully things will be slightly easier for you. I'm still waiting to finish this, I'm stuck ina huge area with a lot of items, just don't give up. Take a break and play a few easier hacks first. Best of luck to you.

I had a very similar experience with Eris.  It took a long time to find items, enemies were very difficult, and exploration was more frustrating than rewarding.  I think I'm too used to the shorter hacks out there, where the play time rarely ever goes above 3 hours.  Eris was definitely something I had to sit down with several times to progress anywhere.  Part of why I think it's a little frustrating to explore is that even though it's huge and pretty, there is only ever the one map section.  It's a little hard for me to remember a unique place with unique graphics and such when it isn't separated by a new map area.  And since I had a hard time remembering, I got lost a lot.

I get a very similar feeling with redesign, it's so big it seems unmanageable at times.
I progressed quickly in this game.  I went directly to morph ball / bombs / missiles.  I got evasion fairly quickly too.  I think when I stopped playing, I had everything up to and including spring ball.  I just got bored, I guess.  I have to admit that I didn't have the patience for figuring out how to get some of the upgrades, particularly ones that required shinesparking up from a completely different room.  While the look was pretty, I sometimes had a hard time discerning the foreground from the background.  I also LOATHE suitless water areas.  I did enjoy seeing the things that D had done, but didn't really enjoy the play.

I struggled with this too.  This is also appearing in more of the recent hacks, and while it looks nice, and is a great effect in linking corridors and such, in combat areas it's distracting.

zazang zadang!
I thought this was a beautiful hack. Nothing resembled the original metroid and I was thrilled to find out that you tweaked items
evasion and chozen suit were superb

and the ending graphics. First time through was choppy for me. definitely worth another play through. Hopefully in the future I'll be able to complete it faster with more items.

Christmas RAGE!
Okay.... So far EVERY hack I've patched to the RIGHT file NEVER WORKED! IT FROZE UP TOO. IT WON'T WORK AND IVE BEEN FORCED TO SUFFER FROM NOT PLAYING HACKS WHILE YOU GUYS TALK ABOUT IT.
PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME WHATS WRONG!?!?

Am I using the wrong emu?  (Zsnes1.51) (snes9x) (Used both)
Armor Guardian
Off the top of my head, your problems could be:

- Accidentally patching over your "clean" copy of of the ROM.
- Having the European ROM (E) instead of the American ROM (U).
- Using SNESTool to apply patches.
Christmas RAGE!
Okay I got it working.

Where the FUCK are the bombs?!?!
I have:

4 missles
Morph
Armor Guardian
It's between the lower "Stargate" and the watery area.

Guys, I've tried everything, I've tried the Headered Rom and then the Unheadered Rom, but to no avail; the Headered rom crashes at the opening cinematic, and the Unheadered Rom just doesn't load...

EDIT: I was able to get by the freezing cinematic by quickly pressing A, although now the game freezes when going to the Morphball room (the water room)...
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Download a fresh ROM.  Check its size.  You need it to be 3,073.  If it's 3,072, you'll need to use SMILE to add a header.  Stick 'em in the same folder, named identically, and then try it again.  It doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong, so this is the most likely problem.

How do I open it without ZSNES saying its a bad rom?

EDIT: I read the thing up above, I cannot find an AMerican Rom(U) All I find is J and E.
I always use Lunar IPS to hard patch my shit and never have any problems.  I'm not saying that whatever your problem is will be avoided by doing it my way, but if you're at the point of trying everything then make sure that this method is on the list.
Well, I heard you need an American Rom, then I read it can be JU, so it hasn't worked on 17 of the roms I've downloaded.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
There are only two ROMs available.  One is (E), and the other is (JU). The one you want is "Super Metroid (JU) [!]".  Once you've extracted it, it should be 3,072KB or 3,073KB in size.  I believe Eris is for a Headered ROM, so you'll need to use SMILE to add a header if it's 3,072KB.  When you load the ROM, 95% of hacks tell you that it is a BAD ROM, because the original data has been altered.  This can be avoided with some fiddling when hacking, but it doesn't make any real difference, so it's not usually worth it.  The hacks ALL WORK FINE EVEN THOUGH IT SAYS BAD ROM!!!

I hope you haven't been trying to get it to say that the ROM was OK, because it never will. =)
Rick Roll'd Metroid2002
ok I was a bit late getting this hack and started playing it 4 days ago. Finally beat it with 7:26 and 78%, fail xD. At least I can still beat SM in a little over 40 minutes. I'm also proud to say I only had to use help to get morph ball after that I got how he designed the game and was able to guess where items were. The level design is superb and while the beginning areas had too much white for my taste, the design got better and better and the last area of the game had me in awe. Mad props to Dman, I'm off to work on SM Synergy

I have completed an any% unassisted speedrun of this game in 0:59 using 18 segments.

This was all done in real-time, you can watch the run on my youtube channel:

http://www.youtube.com/user/MudSharkDanceLesson

The first 14 segments are already uploaded, the remaining four should be up by this weekend.  Obviously, this run can be improved, but overall I was pleased with my final time.

I have fallen victim to the freeze mentioned earlier in this thread. I was hoping to download the patch that was made but it doesn't seem to be here anymore. Does anyone know where I might get it? I have attached a screenshot of the freeze for good measure.

DMantra has the patch on his site.

This was a truly great hack! I had it put on a SNES cart so I could play it on real hardware. Just wanted to share my custom cover I made with everyone! If you want the cover and the cart label, just shoot me a PM.

You can do that??? Thats awesome! That looks too good! Makes me want to go to the store and actually BUY the game, LOL. Probably might cost a fortune though. XD

Thanks. yeah, I plan on doing more covers for the other hacks when they come out.To have this put on a cart wasn't all that expensive.

Looks very good, actually, but is that the Eris map, as it looks odd? Think
