I say deep red, because I think it suits the background.

Deep red is nice, but I like the cyan better because the spikes and the chewing flowers have a better contrast.

I agree with Zen0morf. The red looks good, but I think it's too similar to the original tiles, and the cyan offers a better contrast.

I'd go with purple...what?
If you do go with purple, may I suggest you change the tops of the flowers to the same as they were in deep red? Much prettier.

Alright, I've pulled this back up and I'm finally working on it again, THIS IS NOT DEAD!!! I'm fixing a lot of things I don't like and I'm completing rooms as I go, I'm currently doing a play through to show you guys what the max items possible are at this point, but for now, here is a spoiler pic:

Well, I kinda fell out of a metroid phase, got back into RS, Starcraft 2, got a serious girlfriend, moved, family issues. A lot has happened, I finally decided I wanted to play some SM, then I got around to my hack and I started back up with it. I'll still work on this hack and it is by no means dead, I wouldn't let this go that easily. I'll keep everyone updated as I go!
