It's going to be another project of remaking original Metroid with Super Metroid engine and it's graphics.

Intro.

First of all, I want to say, I don't want to claim work of the others as my own. I planned to recreate Metroid universe a long time ago (even before Zero Mission is out), but I has no time and ability to do that. How I have them. Think about it, enemies is there, almost all tiles is there, items is there, so why not to do it?

3 vision of Metroid is better than one, I think. Although, all of us are trying to recreate the original universe on Metroid, there are difference between our works. What's the difference? Here is a small table of what I know.

I wish all of us will help and share ideas with each other to create a 3 really great hacks. All about the same, but different.

Features:
(white ones are released, grey ones are planned)

  • New save station PLM. Old one is still in game.
  • Elevators are acting like a save point. You can save right after using elevator.
  • There'll be a megapack of missiles after every boss as reward.
  • Most of horizontal rooms are 16 blocks in height versus 12 in Super Metroid.
  • Rooms are very close to original layout of Metroid with minor changes due to better gameplay.
  • Original layout of Super Metriod is still there.
  • Palette of some enemies is changed to looks like in original Metroid.
  • (Every) enemy (will) have a stronger version.
  • 3 or even 4 versions of difficulty. Current version is Normal.
Easy will have a part of enemies. All HP are from Super Metroid. Energy tanks gives you double amount of energy. Acid/Lava will replaced with Sand/Water at some places.
Normal will have all enemies. All HP are from Super Metroid.
Hard will have a part of enemies. All HP are from Metroid.
Expert will have all enemies. All HP are from Metroid.
  • Wait for very hard mini-Kraid =) I know, some of you want it.
  • Almost all doors are shifted by one block to the top.
  • You will land at the same place as in Super Metroid.
  • Story text and title are changed.
  • Elevator from Crateria is passing through Tourian as it must be. You can see sleeping Tourian while using elevator.
  • There'll be 7 energy tanks and 1 reserve for better looking weapon panel.
  • You will escape Tourian on elevator, not through door like in Super Metroid was.
  • Yellow Brinstar will use same tiles like a orange Brinstar in Super Metroid. If you look map of Super Metroid carefully, then you'll see that orange Brinstar is placed to the right from blue one.
  • Blue Brinstar and orange Brinstar is connecting with Crateria tube room.
  • 3 rooms of blue Brinstar that left in Super Metroid will be changed a little.  They are very similar to the Super Metroid ones because they weren't rebuild by a space pirates.
  • 3 new traps in Brinstar. 2 of them is almost mortal. Use savestates from time to time if you want!

My vision of yellow Brinstar. Still unfinished.

My vision of blue bubble Brinstar. That part will be buried before Super Metroid.
P.S. No swiming allowed. Or else, prepare to fry fast.

Enemies much?
Well, all of them are in Metroid, but only part of them are spawning at the same time due to engine limitation (as far as I know). After killing all spawned enemies in certain screen, the rest of enemies will spawn after returning to this screen. I've just make all of them appear at the same time.

For mapping and placing enemies, I've used Metedit.

And enemies are the main problem for me now. I can't add more because there is no free space in the enemy bank ($A1)
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Can't you just swap the enemies pointers for the rooms.  I know you may still run into this problem later, but you'd at least have made a start.
Green-Kirby, ROAR!
You could always just make another bank to have the enemies in. The downside is that you won't have SMILE support while editing them (IIRC that is.)
This is very similar to my old school project  but i will have additional hidden rooms and maridia and wrecked ship will be revamped and in the game  but this should be good
SAMUS ARAN RULES
dude i love this already and i just downloaded the patch
Burrrp!
Cool stuff JAM, I like how close it is to the original you even made the rooms 2 scroll areas high so nothing is cut off.
But i fell into 2 of your traps dying both times and cried because i did not see a saver, should i use state saves?

I've got it, thanks. I guess, I should store current enemy bank to another place and start filling bank $A1 from beginning. At the very end, when every enemy in the game will be correctly placed, I'll return to this problem. The good thing is that 2 enemy banks is possible and I can continue my work now.

Yeah, your hack will be much closer to Zero Mission, like extended version of Metroid 1 =) It's wonderful. Good luck with your hack!

Thank you. I glad you liked that idea of height of horizontal rooms. I was very doubtful when doing this first time...

I forgot to tell about savestates, sorry... Just use them from time to time.

I want to little change useless dead ends. In some of them will be traps, in others -- something useful. If you don't pass original Metroid, you better use savestates or you'll be doomed in some traps. As for existing traps, you can get out from any of them if you have 2 full Energy Tanks and Varia Suit. There is always an exit but it hidden sometimes.

White screen of death is just a "free space of FF's" because you enter the data where rooms haven't built yet. I've made this as an answer to question "What's going to be if someone enters a program code through "secret worlds" in Super Metroid?"  Wink

From this trap you can go back the same way if you'll be quick. Erasure is fast but not immediately
Merry Christmas
OMG, *Tails is crying*
Definitely a keeper. Good job JAM. Keep up the good work Tbolt76.
I have played through what you got now  and i really love it.  I cant wait to see all 3 projects done and your idea of sharing ideas?  im going to take you up on that! grin new
Merry Christmas

I think there's 2 others working on a Metroid (1) style hack of SM.  This looks to be of the highest quality (and reminiscent of M1) so far. *thumbs up*

Edit: I went somewhere....  It was a tunnel....  And at the end of it there was this blinding liiiiiiiii...... x_x

Brinstar of Metroid 1 is having 3 "exits", not counting the one you've entered. One of them is a dead end, another one warps you to another room, and the third one teleports you to the Super Metroid world. Bomb Torizo is at the same place there. His states are changed because you'll be more powerful when meet him.

I recomend to collect everything you can before going through "exits".

Thanks for reply. I'll try to do by best

Yeah, it's a light at the end of tunnel =) You've understood my idea! =)

Another meaning of it.
Rooms there hasn't built yet, so there are a free space by now. You've just travelled into it and saw it from inside.  Wink
Merry Christmas
I love the Bomb Torizo battle.
I wonder how Tourian will bw?

I glad you liked it  Wink
I'll try to make it very close to original. Metroids will not respawn after you clean the room. Now I'm working with Kraid's Lair and improvement of Brinstar.

pretty good.
Fear Me! (Or else...)
I like it. The touches of green in the background help it so that it doesn't just look like a black-and-white area, with only Samus as color, and overall, it just blends really nicely. This is one that I'm going to play as soon as it gets out.
me too.  Very Happy
This is Life
nicely grin new done JAM
Super Metroid: Dark Cloud
I was playing this last night and I think that it is going to be an awesome hack to play when it is finally released! Keep up the good work!

Here is the news.
Current version is 3.00

Only 6 new rooms are completly done, but a lot of stuff are relocated, compressed and a little improved. So, the public beta will be when Kraid's lair will be completly done.
Known bugs are eliminated.
Bank $A1 is full. I mean, REALLY full.

I've started to fill second enemy bank.

Thanks to Kej for helping with relocating:
