So is there anyway out of this room or am I just screwed? Can't seem to find any enemies to kill to open up the doors.

Look, I don't know, it was 2 and a half year ago I got done with this thing.

If you really, REALLY, want to play this hack then I do suggest that you use save stats!

Perhaps it would be possible to label the title as [SM]Ice (final beta) or [SM]Ice (unfinished), to prevent such queries?

EDIT AGAIN: Oooh, you got a major error glitch in this room. each time you re-enter this room, the missile tank keeps appearing

Good news!
I played the hack from start to end and made some bug fixes.
There are still shit loads of glitches in the game so I still suggest you play with save states if you play it at all!

Fixes:
-Mother brains room does not crash.
-Escape does not crash anymore.
-You can't get stuck in maradia after draygon anymore.
-You can't get stuck in brinstar room due to closed hatch PML and no enemies.
-Scrolling in lower norfair works better now.
-CRE palette was fixed.

Now beside the fixes I also made some changes:
-Gravity suit palette does not blend in as well anymore.
-Crateria palette was edited to look less gray.
-WS palette was edited.
-Norfair palette was changed a bit, mainly the lower norfair part.
-Suit effects looks better.
-GBA styled CRE GFX was added.
-Some small level design changes that no one will notice.

Grab the new patch in this post for now.

I'm stuck really early, in the Brinstar escape shaft. I kill all the pirates but the upper door does not open. Am I supposed to go a different way? None is apparent. I have morph and missiles.

No hack of SM made with SMILE will work with an E rom. You want JU, but there's two types, headered or unheadered. You can tell the difference by the file size, unheadered is 3072kb and headered is 3073kb.

Thanks. It's nothing earth-shattering, but it's actually a pretty fun little half-hack so far. I just beat Kraid.

Edit: Am I supposed to be able to get to the room where the speed booster is in the original? I cannot get the room below to scroll upwards no matter where I jump. I assume speed booster is my next pick-up. I have morph, bombs, 45 missiles, 5 supers, varia and spazer. Croc is dead but I can't get anything new. I can't get back to most of brinstar without wave.

Power bomb blocks are everywhere. Everywhere.

Yes.
You need to jump up on the right side of the room.
