I shouldn't really bring this topic back, but is the avatars directory the one where the avatar is uploaded from or a storage on the actual site, in which case what is the URL?
The avatars directory I'm referring to is the directory http://www.metroid2002.com/usbcd36/Avatars/(my FTP) but you can have your avatar directory anywhere you can upload files that display in an actual directory (ie, a Yahoo! briefcase does not work)
If you have your own FTP at metroid2002.com, you should make a directory there and fill it with your images and the script. If not, ask someone to store them in their FTP (or other webspace) for you. If all else fails, learn to survive with a single avatar.
The PHP code to make the script work is actually really simple. The filestream opens a directory, creates an object array and fills it with all the files that match the extensions given in the if clause. Then it generates a random number within the array size limits, rounds it, and assigns the location of the URL to the pic with that index in the array. It's extremely easy, and one who claims to know C++ and doesn't understand such a simple thing doesn't really get my respect.
just a question, but whats stopping you guys from making a kit that all you have to do is ad the avatars and host it? also, how do i get a ftp directory on metroid 2002?
1. Only speedrunners get FTP accounts at M2k2, as far as I know. 2. You want random avatars, you get the script and apply it yourself. Everyone who's got a random avatar script here has done exactly the same; why should you be an exception?

I think a couple of people have FTP's and don't speedrun. USBCD36 comes to mind.

Would this work for just random images anywhere? Like, in the middle of a site or something? (Gee, what possible reason could Saber have for asking a question like that?)

I'm pretty much 100% sure that it would. In fact, you'd probably be able to skip a step.
Don't mean to bring this back up if I shouldn't (and it's okay unless it's over 2 weeks, right?) but I wanted to upload stuff to m2k2 and I had been using my (overly stupid) Yahoo! briefcase. Finally, after much frusteration in making folders, making them public, segmenting files and uploading them 15 MB at a time, I got pissed and PMed Nate asking if there was already an FTP set up for me and if there was, how to access it. In his next message, he told me there was and gave me the password for it (which incidentally, isn't the same as your m2k2 forum password so don't try it) and it was up! I would not suggest all asking Nate at once for an FTP because he might not like everyone getting one just for their avatars (and I would get in trouble for suggesting it too), but if you REALLY need one because you are posting smaller vids and stuff, he will probably let you have one.
Actually, the bump limit is one month (if that's what you're referring to), so you're fine. Even if you did bump, you posted something worthwhile, which is also fine.
Yeah, I'm bumping a frickin' 4-year old thread. Ark said it was okay, so even if it's not, screw the rules, I have money. =D And it's a kind of money all of you who (still) want random avatars (in this day and age) might want to check out. =p
