Curious if anybody can claim they know somebody who's completed an RBO without emulator? I'm about prepped to try one on my Wii port of the game, and while I'm prepared to deal with a certain level of frustration, I want to know if anyone knows if it's even possible without TAS and if anybody has advice for me on the Lower Norfair run.

Also, random question- anyone know if the freeze glitch used to get the spring ball w/o grapple can be performed without the gravity suit? I've tried it for like 45 minutes with no luck.

The RBO is definitely possible on console - it's just very, very tough.

Technically, it should be possible to get past without gravity, but you won't get the springball suitless because of the 2-block hole. Can't BJ or jump+morph, so there is no use in even trying to get past the the first part.

Also, Saturn has completed an RBO in realtime, I almost have.. >.>

Saturn's run was done with save states, though, which isn't the same as a console run.

Played to 100% in realtime, but with savestates for consistency and heavy luck manipulation
I finished a console condition RBO without savestates or slowdowns as well. Recorded on a emulator (and thus obviously not provable to be legit), but only for easier sharing. More details about it here:

Okay, looking at 10 E-tanks, 2 reserves, 150 missiles, 30 supers, and 35 P-Bombs, and going to enter Lower Norfair the next time I get a chance to game up some. I'll probably take Saturn's advice and do the GT fight. Only problem is I'm not l33t skillz at not getting hit by him (I remember the fight being ridiculously difficult on SM: Impossible, but obviously, that's on purpose) so with that in mind, I'll probably give GT a billion tries before I even START worrying about Ridley. *SIGH*

On another note, I'm pretty sure it's impossible to get that Maridia reserve without TAS, because my thumbs almost fall off trying to walljump at the apex of the water. Anyone ever done it in realtime?

Ugh, my time on this run is gonna be abysmal...probably like 5 hours or somesuch, but hey I'm not a speedrunner so whatev.

You don't need any insane skills to avoid his attacks, just stand right next to him (pretty much on his front foot), and shoot upward with your charged shots.  He cannot hit you if you're in the right spot.

With this particular run, time is all but irrelevant - just finishing it is trophy enough. extra_smug

Yes, the Maridia reserve tank can be collected, you just need to get a lucky WJ out of the water. I'm pretty sure Red Scarlet did it in her NBMB console run if you want to refer to that for advice/help for obtaining suitless items. And yes, GT is a very very simple fight, even suitless and it gives access to the SA and another super missle pack, ofc, you can get the SA anyways. Yeah like Quietus said, crouch on his right foot (crouching makes you feel safer!) or around it to have him stuck and unable to hit you. Aim up and fire charged shots until he is dead.
From what I heard, charged shots without plasma beam are less powerful than just pumping supers into him. I'll try both ways.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
The problem with Supers is that he catches the first, and then throws it at you while you hit him with the next few, meaning that you can't avoid damage from him without a lot more manoeuvring.  Doing this means you also can't be hitting him as often as possible.
I recommend using Supers on GT, since charged shots without Plasma will probably take too much time to survive the heat drain, even if you avoid any other damage. Just keep a safe distance when doing so, and you should have no troubles dodging his throws in time. With 30 of them it doesn't matter much when he catches one once in a while either.

I highly disagree with Saturn here, as it will be a little tricker than said to constantly get supers in on GT in realtime, especially when he's moving around coming at you and all. Using charged shots may take slightly longer, but you can stay stationary the entire fight without worrying about any dmg, there is an energy recharger right after GT, and with 10 e-tanks, there should be ample time. Gogo valid points!
Well the way I see it, it doesn't matter either way, as long as I kill him. There is an energy charger after the fight, but you can also recharge supers and power bombs in the rooms after that.

So as long as I find a way to get GT dead, I'm good.

The GT fight with 30 Supers is piece of cake if you do it right. Check my unassisted 1:15 run to get a good picture of it.

But ok, as long as there is enough time to survive the heat even without Plasma it's probably the better way to go anyway, since you can skip the Super Missile refills after the fight as well, which will most likely make up for the slower GT fight.

Run was totally awesome like every Hotarubi runs.

I wonder how he did shine spark in Draygon room? Is this some glitch?

I as well loved his Phantoon fight. Looks easy, but using plasma and X-ray visor was cool stuff and news to me.  Wink

Yes.  You can obtain the blue suit by either Shinesparking into him to kill him, or let him grab you during a Crystal Flash. Very Happy

He is hit by the beam repeatedly when you keep using the X-ray.  You can also do it to Draygon, but of course you need to glitch to get Plasma first.
Embarrasing Fact: Power suit made by lowest bidder
Golden Torizo is a chump if you get the positioning right just in front of him. He won't even through the super missiles back at you, he instead throws them STRAIGHT UP.
So yeah, basically just use whatever you can spare to kill him fastest with.
Killed GT tonight, using all supers and then charge shots, wasted him without having to CF during fight, which was good considering that I didn't have any supers anymore!

Question- should I go back to the bug room in upper norfair to restock before making the journey to Ridley? *cringes at the thought of having to time his lava-jumps again* or should I just go on through Lower Norfair? I have like 5 PBs after CFing at the save room. I know I can restock off of the blue orbs under the pirates, and all, but just curious what people think I should do.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I would say it's definitely worth restocking your Supers for Ridley, but also be aware that when you're using them, you should keep 10 in case you need to Crystal Flash during the fight.

But you don't have to go back to Upper Norfair to do so.  You can Screw Attack the Zoomers (?) in the room above the energy station after GT, and they pretty much always drop Supers.  It's much quicker, and since you've got to pass back through it anyway, there's no reason not to.
Going back and forth between zoomers and blue orbs sounds like a pain, but I guess it's better than spending an hour trying to redo the lava jumps required to get IN to lower Norfair. Where, praytell, would I be able to fill up on regular missiles should the need arise? I have 140 at the moment (used I think 2 CFs so far), and I doubt I'll need to Crystal Flash 14 times, but you never know.

Anyways, I'm debating whether or not to have my girlfriend record my 4 boss attempts (at least the successful ones) on a digital camera to serve as RBO proof. I just don't know if I want to put her through all the failures lol.
Got to next save area. Full on missiles and PBs, and have like 16 supers. Looks like it's straight to Ridley next.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
The normal procedure is to refill your Bombs on the orbs when you head into Lower Norfair, allowing you two Crystal Flashes, and refill Supers on the zoomers after GT, as you have to pass back through the room anyway, and you can then just refill health again below(above Screw Attack), so you face Ridley (and the route to him) with more gear.  As for Missiles, they really serve no purpose beyond normal enemy slaying as far as I know, because your charged beam will almost always out-damage them in the boss fights.

Why do you need proof? Are you not doing this to prove to yourself you can own the game? Anyways, don't use a digital camera.. get a VCR or DVD recorder so that it will be pleasing to the eyes to watch again and again. :P
