I can't seem to find any information on this animation. Ive played through metroid prime at least 15 times, seen it played about 5, and im all over beta assests and reading up on every little detail about the games production.

While I was playing through the game drunk I entered the root cave and ran past the beetles onto a rock.
They started squealing, hopping in place, and even barking, moving there mandibles and looking side to side.
Since then I have attempted to recreate this odd spectacle but it appears they only do it in the root cave.

Have I stumbled across some rare ai programming, or is this already known and somehow ive missed it all these years?

You have a recording?
pretty sure there is nothing special about the Root Cave beetles, they use the same animations and AI as the beetles in other parts of the game
http://www.metroid2002.com/other_ghetto_jumping_beetle.php

that's everything about jumping beetles.

Thats not it! Ill snag a recording now

Got one, not sure where or how to post on here

Upload it to YouTube, then post a link to the video. It will automatically embed.

I won't be able to get a video uploaded on this iPhone, but the day after tomorrow I'll have a new phone.

If anyone is interested in seeing it themselves, pm me. I'll lead you through the steps and exact spot in which to stand.

That is an odd amount of secrecy for something ultimately very trivial.

Enter the root cave from the upper level, and jump down, landing in the beetles nest.
Do not kill a single beetle.
There's the path of rocks leading up; and on that path is a rock that sticks out farthest near the nest. Stand on it and wait. The beetles will begin barking and looking side to side. I can provide pictures of the rocks if no one can achieve it.

Huh, I'll be damned. I wonder if something about that position makes the AI freak out.

DID I TECHNICALLY DISCOVER THIS OR

Anyways, it seems as if the animation should be used for any time you're above a beetle and they can't reach you, as they bark, leap and look side to side. They also stomp their front leg forward, like the splinters do... yet they charge the wall in any other situation lol
dunno, that seems like pretty normal behavior to me, aside from the brief animation of the one standing still.

Yeah, I don't think there's anything truly unique here. Maybe an animation loop you don't see often because the beetles are usually busy being aggressive or being dead, but not like a super special secret thing.

Well, I've never seen it before, ever. I can't recreate it anywhere else, either.

i'm still not sure what the unique animation you're talking about is. those look like their standard animations, just perhaps occurring at a weird time
death yon
So you're telling me you've seen them stand in one place, hop up and down, look side to side and stomp their front foot forward?

Because I've played Metroid extensively and I've never seen it once
red chamber dream
dunno. you could be right, i just didn't think it looked like anything out of the ordinary. haven't played prime in a while though
