It's possible that coding Power Grip to be usable when it hadn't been picked up and then disabling it when you got the fully powered suit would have caused too many problems in the game and taken too long to code.

One goddamned variable.  I could have coded it ffs.  Not difficult, not bug causing, just NOT DONE.

Has anyone considered that they might have had a sequence later in the game where you'd be trapped without the grip that they removed at some point?  It's a much simpler explanation.

Ready and willing.
I can't think of a single configuration of blocks that you couldn't get through with bomb jumps but could with the PG. (Actually, I can if you assume the developers didn't think a HBJ was possible, but even then you would need the space jump AND a crumble block ground to do it, which is probably too wacky for the main path.)
Meh, I guess I'm kinda glad they force power grip on ya, cause escaping from tourian would be a bitch without it.

How about underwater stuff?  If you don't have the Gravity suit, bomb jumps are pretty much out of the question, right?

Ever heard of Wall Jump? :) Tourian ain't that hard. Maybe the part where you have to morph to get to MB perhaps but nothing more than that.
I'm aware of the wall jumping, but I'd still hate trying.

Getting to MB without Power Grip wouldn't be a problem at all. There have been countless times when I wall jumped up the wall and morphed in mid-air without grabbing onto the edge.
Which part of what level was this?  I'm quite confused.

and I don't remember any part of ZM where I *needed* the Grip, but I could imagine one involving water.
No you can usually wall jump out of most situations I presume.
I just did a no power grip run on normal mode on the rom.

I used the area modifier code to warp into ridley from norfair, and when I beat ridley, I warped back into brinstar with a different code, and completed the world's first (but cheated) 8% run.

The Tourian Escape was hard. VERY hard. I had to practice ibjs on demand from delayed crumble blocks. Also, there are a few metroid rooms where you have to ibj up, or freeze a miscellaneous enemy to get up. makes you miss the grip a lot.

Also, Mother Brain requires no falling down, because getting back up requires underwater wall jumps. Although they are far more practical here than in fusion, it's still hard to win after falling off, due to the lava, 99 energy, varialessness(I was stupid enough to forget this) and rinkas.

An interesting thingy is that in the suitless section, the game gives the power grip back to you, and the moment you get your suit back, it goes away. Weird.

Anyway, it's not too great of an accomplishment, but meh, I was bored. :)
Oh, it's that guy
^^ Excellent work...leave it to a hacker (or whatever the hell you are :P ) to solve a video games' great mystryies (sp?)...
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
That's not weird at all. Suitless Samus shouldn't be affected by any of the suit augmentations at all (except for e-tanks), so that's precisely how it should be. Remember, she's carrying a lot less bulk, so she doesn't need some fancy gizmo to hold herself up.

The Hi Jump doesn't affect suitless Samus by the same logic. And don't try telling me it does; it doesn't.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
The ponytail adds a lot of weight though.
