I haven't gotten it in any runs, but I keep passing it and am like holy crap I keep forgetting!

Heading to the biosphere, theres a shaft you climb up to the top to hit a button, then drop back to the bottom to ballspark up to the top. There are a couple glass blocks on the sides, and a box hanging from the ceiling that you can missile, IIRC. I think it's right before a hall full of kihunters and 3 roly polys in the room after.
ballspark

also i have no clue what you're talking about :P

1-Up
Beat this game the week it came out, picked it back up this week. Worse than I remembered. Played up through seeker missiles but I just can't care anymore. It did at least make me wonder if anybody is actively running this, so I'm happy to see that you're playing it, JaggerG. Do you have a youtube or twitch link to any of the best runs? I found this, but it seems to be a bit slower than the time you mentioned.
I found the one he just did 3 days ago on Twitch. He's done several runs on there in the last few weeks but I'm only seeing one more up there right now and it's the one that has all of the cutscenes in it. (Which I still need to take a closer look at to check the timing)

The latest one I streamed had been 2 runs, the latter being the 4:03:somethingsomething.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Wait you played this game twice in one sitting? Your dedication is impressive and also worrying.

impressive, depressive, close enough.

Just finished another run myself. Ended up being one of my fastest runs to date at 04:22:38 (14% normal) in 03:09 real time. Again, there's that 1:13 difference.

Would've been a SS run if I hadn't stupidly died at Ridley, so it turned into a 2 segment since I didn't want to start over a 2nd time. (Died early on in my 1st attempt somewhere in Sector 1 so I restarted from scratch) Fell into the red quite a few times throughout the run including at Phantoon but that's the only place I ended up dying. Worst mistake I made was losing several minutes near the Ki-Hunter hive battle when I kept falling off of the tree or missing jumps. Still, that was only five game minutes slower than my record so I'm quite proud of the results.

Speaking of Phantoon, I think that's the first time I haven't defeated him by hopping on his eye and blasting it. I kept firing charged Plasma shots and eventually his eye just exploded and the fight was over. Took me by surprise since I don't remember ever seeing that happen before.

Yeah, overcharges are pretty strong. Not sure on the exact strength, but it's definitely stronger than 2 charge ice beams against Gumby in Sector 3.

Also I just got a 3:56:18 yeayeah! Definitely could save time. I think real time had been like 2:39ish, but I had disconnects, so I'm not sure.
Awesome! Isn't that our new unofficial record? Hitaka had 3:58 or so right?

Yeah, Archan_ popped into my chat and gave me tips such as "you don't have to fight these guys" and "you don't have to change the atmosphere here." Not sure if he's around here, but big thanks to him. I can probably shave off a couple minutes just from better fights. They're not hard, I'm just trying really hard to shinespark Nightmare and such. No clue if it's even very effective.
I'm currently going through your cutscene stream. Not sure if this is where that atmosphere comment came from or not, but there's a point in Sector 1 where you go up to a console to change the scenery before heading down to bomb the wall at the back of the room to find a Morph Ball tunnel. (Room at 00:57:43) You can just head back and bomb the wall as soon as you enter the room without going up there, which only saves a few seconds but every bit counts.

yeah it probably saves like 8 seconds, that's a ton in speedrunning because it's not the only poorly routed room. I group it as part of a small handful of silly mistakes that, together, add up to minutes. It's like, if messing up remorphing as you jump over things costs you a second, and you do it a hundred times a run, it can be a huge time saver if you get better at it. It's kinda funny; despite speedrunning being essentially doing the same thing tons of times, one of the most important and easily forgotten parts is NOT doing the same things as before. I, and I suspect many others, try NOT to think I'm great at games, so I don't get complacent and fall into bad patterns.

2:34:45 RTA, 3:52:43 in-game. THAT'S more like it.

Also I typed this up a couple nights ago and apparently forgot to post...?
Oh cool, I noticed this late last night but didn't have time to comment on it. Awesome work!

I might have to take a look at the run later to see where you saved the most time. You're about 30 minutes faster than my most recent runs so there's got to be something big that you do to cut corners. Do you happen to remember any specific time savers?

There are several shinesparks that save time, but one of them is really finnicky and I probably don't actually save time because it takes me several tries. I got the desert sparks first try, though. I also use the grapple points at the start of the huge lava room the third time through to cut out some turning around, then mess it up and probably lose the time I saved >_<

But yeah, it might be mostly the combat and learning the actual triggers to advance the plot. There are a lot of enemies that you can just almost immediately lethal strike. The lava fish is probably the most interesting boss for speedrunning.

Also I nailed the 2-round gumby boss.

2:31:39, 3:50:01 in-game! I also discovered an even faster form of rapid-missiles. Gonna make another thread for it. Seems useless, though. :^(

beat my rta time by 2 seconds, but in-game is 2 seconds longer, lol.

Also, Archan_ linked me TheOnly0's old run that's apparently 2:26, 3:41 in-game. I'm learning SO MUCH. I had no idea normal beam is so strong for some parts. I'm considering skipping the accel charges, since sense-move charges instantly, but I'm not so sure. I think I need 4 of them for beating the PB doors quickly, but maybe not. They definitely help against MQueen and Nightmare, maybe Ridley. But do they ALL help, or are only 2 enough?
3:41??? Is he just that good at combat or something?

And I don't know about the accel charges. I noticed a substantial improvement in my combat abilities when I had 4 instead of 2, since there are those moments when you need to charge quickly between attacks such as during the Nightmare battle. Other than that 1st one in the dressing room they don't really take that long to get... Do you think you can make up the amount of time it takes to get them throughout the rest of the run?

But yeah, I think the only place accel charges make enough of a difference are against the bosses. Those PB doors can be taken out with a quick Super and Lethal Strike, can't they?
Shifty Leader
That M2k2 guy
Uhhhh not that I've seen. It sometimes takes me a super and 2 charge shots. He did most of the tricks I do and more, but most of his movements and strats are pretty suboptimal, and he hadn't planned out all the shinesparks yet. He also died against Ridley, but that doesn't count against in-game time.

I'm struggling to think up places Accel charges are needed, but I think the places it is save a lot of time. It's just hard to say. The first 2 are pretty costly to get.

I might skip an etank, too. Not sure. Ideal is only grabbing 2, of course, but it's pretty hard. Concentrating cancels the time you save skipping it.

YOSSSSSSSS 2:29:18 RTA, 3:47:35 in-game! Both endings, naturally.
You are on a roll, man!

I'll have to check this out once you find a time you like. Wink
