HELLO WORLD!!!!!!1

I'm starting to learn SMILE, started playing but have to go through the manual or whatever guides are here or various other places online but I'm wondering what exactly is possible with SMILE, I have a "small hack" planned and need to know if the following things are possible to do in SMILE or with simple ASM hacks.

*Go directly to the game (this isn't 100% neccessary but would be much better for my needs), I figure this requires ASM to select the file and stuff like that...but not sure where to start
*Change/insert music other than the Super Metroid tracks (original with XMSNES)

I have some experience with ASM but not directly with Super Metroid and less with Super Nintendo in general. Basically I'm not looking for a step by step situation, just a general idea of where I would start to look

let me know if this violates some n00b threshold I'm not aware of

Thread title:
Go ahead. Stare.
This would probably be best asked in the SMILE help thread.

As for the music, I believe there is only one hack that has anything custom in it, and it isn't released yet because it seems to be rather difficult to do right now. There might be more on inserting music later, but for now...

...and going directly into the game is easy.  Most hacks already do this, bypassing all of the story and Ceres, and starting at the ship.

man you guys are fast over here.

thanks, my bad though. I actually saw that as an option in SMILE... I edited the post a bit and forgot to change the first asterix. I want to skip the intro to the game ie title screen, nintendo logo, game choice...I figure that I need asm to as in a routine to select that.

I found those documents from Kejardon, I'll peruse those and see what I can do and start to post more related to the hack I'm starting up.

Green-Kirby, ROAR!
Impossible is nothing. You just need to know how to do it.
Kej's docs are a good start for ROM and RAM map of super metroid.
Good luck!
OMG FLAN!!!!!!!
You can change the music tracks in Super Metroid IF you can understand it. I've only been able to change a few instruments of one song so far. Look through Kej's docs for the SPC Ram Map file. It has tonnes of info about how the music runs in game, how to edit it, and all the instruments and pitches used in the game (including what data represents it). It's NOT *anyone except Kejardon* friendly though, so you might need to read it several (hundred) times laugh new.

There's also a program called Solar Soundtrack in the works by someone that can edit nd import/export spc  files into snes games (including N-Spc, the type Super Metroid and Super Mario use). It hasn't been released yet, but IIRC guy who's making it is the same guy helping Acheron put new music into Aegis.

Actually I thaught that you would say: "Insanity, by Kejardon" but that hack will probably take 2-3 years to make (maybe even more) Crying or Very sad
OMG FLAN!!!!!!!
I would be very surprised if Kej didn't completely rewrite almost everything in the game to some extent, including music.

Yeah - it'll probably end up Super Metroid in name only. aiwebs_011

hah looks that way. I came across the videos for those on Youtube a while ago not knowing what it was or that it was the same guy who did those docs.

Anyway, thanks this is a good forum.

I'm basically going to get crackin

That is the best way to learn SMILE. PLay around with it for a while and figure stuff out, we'll still be around for any deeper questions you have.

alright thanks guys, this forum is awesome, sorry to be redundant.

Anyway, due to the time constraints I'm going to work on my hack on the NES version of Metroid and then eventually port it over to SNES. This is also better since I haven't "cut my teeth" with ROM hacking and done easy graphics and text hacks, but know some ASM so I kind of started the wrong way round. The hack I'm doing also relies on some stuff that the NES is more known for (physical objects moving from the left side of the screen to the right a la Super Mario 2)

What is the deal with posting NES Metroid hacks/pleas for help on this forum?
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
The hack itself is no problem, but unless the editor is as widespread as SMILE, it probably won't warrant its own help thread yet, so I'd just roll with your own topic for the hack, and put your 'pleas' there.

(Decent) Metroid hacks are few and far between as far as I can tell, so good luck with it! aiwebs_011
Time bomb set get out fast!
Oh, they're not few.  Here are a bunch, and there are more out there.  As for the "decent" part, I can only speak for Metroid X, but I love that one.

benjaminshinobi: Glad you like the forum!  When it comes to your plan, the thing to be aware of is that hacking Metroid 1 is very different from hacking Super Metroid.  They're completely different animals.  M1 uses all sorts of trickery to make the game take up less cartridge space, which leads to strange limitations; for instance, I didn't notice this till it was pointed out, but the rooms always alternate horizontal/vertical (except for "special" ones containing Chozo statues, elevators, or bosses).  Similarly, if you move any item vertically, you move all the ones on the same map row with it.  It's weird, but that's just how the game is programmed.

Super Metroid had a lot more space to work with, so it's somewhat more rationally programmed.  The catch?  It's HUGE.  The properties have properties.  There's code for every enemy interaction you can imagine and some you can't.  But it sounds like you've learned this already.

So, to sum up: we welcome NES hackers here and will give you any help we can.  Just be aware that making a Metroid 1 hack may or may not be of any use to you when you go back to working with Super Metroid.
