i apologize for the forum outages today. we are trying to troubleshoot a server-wide problem, and this forum has been implicated in it. i have disabled the smart tags mod, but i have reenabled gzip (because disabling it didn't help), so enjoy the faster load speeds.
Thread title:
Haha, the downage was like drug withdrawl for me.  M2K2 not existing for a while slapped me into realizing there were things in life outside of here that needed to get done.

Yeah, other things like putting kip's 1:04 onto my iPod. :)
I don't get whats going on here. I e-mailed you wondering why it's going so slow, then all of a sudden, bam boom, out goes the whole site, metroid2002, and forums. Whats going on....seriously. Me, even Iris's forums wondered. I told Iris to goto your sites seeing if it happens to him, and it did too. (Iris advertises your site on his forums)

Man, i don't get whats going on here. All of a sudden, the last 2 or 3 days it's been either going slow, losing connection, or just showing most of the my SQL problems.

Nate, it even happened agian.

Is it the bandwidth? SQL?.....Money?

I'm gonna go back to playing DS2.

Hopefully this problem is fixed soon.

Yeah, Nate, I've frequently been getting a popup saying that the page cannot be reached when trying to load a section of the forum. After  few tries, it will work, but it's happening a lot.

It does this crap to me all the time when I'm in the dorm anyway, so I don't notice a difference.

I picked a good time to be absorbed in a new game, apparently.
Alright, is it part of the downage screwing stuff up, or did a *bunch* of people just get banned?  I was reading a topic, went to the next page, and a bunch of the people who were showing as their ranking on the first page become [banned] when I went to the second page?

Death: Nope, that's wasn't a glitch, I did some bannin's today. Probably be rather important and embarassing if it was a glitch...

I must not be on the forum enough either. Didn't even notice at all. >_<; Hey, at least you guys don't have to go down for regularly scheduled maintenance every single night, like this other forum I知 on.

I wouldn't normally ask this here, but if all those were deliberate, did something drastic happen that isn't showing up?  I'm asking about pkmn specifically.  Critical as I often am of him, I don't recall seeing anything I'd associate with banworthiness as defined in the rules.

IMO a ban was too harsh, a temp ban or something would have been better suited, there were 13 consecutive posts (by them) in the Pokémon topic with almost no context but "X > Y".

It's just like, I'm away for like, one night, and when I get back there's this gigantic black hole of suck that popped up overnight. It's gone now, because black holes of suck are distracting, but yeah...

But yeah what? It was one topic that went to hell, not like we haven't seen that before.

Heh, you called me just Death.  Sometimes i wish I were...

But a glitch in the server has caused my friend's forum to have some members turned up banned.  He got banned, emailed one of the mods, they realized he was banned but no one had banned him...  Reinstated him...  Some crazy stuff that a glitch could cause some banning to take place.  I've personally never seen it myself, but my friend mentioned it, and then I saw them banned...

And you usually don't see members get banned after they're around for a long time.  I mean, most bans usually take place early in a user's existence on the thread.  That thought also added to the "Maybe it was a glitch?" train of thought.
of course, if the thinking on banning changes, then you'll all of a sudden see lots of people banned who would have been banned right when they first arrived if the new thinking had been in place at that time.
Cook of the Sea
Which could also be construed as a kind of glitch in the system, this sudden changing.  But of the old thinking and new thinking, which is the glitch?

OK...  I'm going to respond on the interpretation of that post I made for myself.  Which could be wrong, since it took me a good seven or eight read-overs to even begin to comprehend it.

In America, the law has a law which makes something like that illegal.  If you do something on day A, but then on day B "they" make a law saying that what you did on day A is illegal, then you cannot ever be prosecuted for what you did on day A.  Since you did it before the law was established, which was upon day B.
Cook of the Sea
That's called ex post facto, or after the fact, and it's illegal in the US to punish some when the law prohibiting an action was made after the fact.

However, this is not the US.  This is the interwebs.
yeah, but watch that red vs blue think if you thing real life is the same as the internet. also note that laws/justice are often based on cultural values, which change over time. when i add new members to the administration, i change the administrative culture here ... goes back to that thing about why power should only be given if there is a problem or there is a clear and present (subjective term) danger of a problem arising.
