Cool thanks quietus for that vid. That is pretty cool. I think you can see hotarubi trying to get an early shot like that in his vids but he misses lol
It's cool that the vid is on PAL too because i think kraid has different claw patterns at the start.
That's correct. That's why I'm stood right at the front of the ledge, so that the first Super avoids his hand. The timing is pretty tight, but not that hard.
My 100% testing is coming along very nicely. Some really crazy room strats. Particularly near the end once i've got the spring ball. There's one where i start at the kung fu pirates room near ridley and i don't stop moving until i'm at the eye door guarding ridleys lair. It looks like a TAS, it's so cool.
I'm a bit more consistant with the ice freeze glitch in maridia to get the spring ball., and the super missle shot in brinstar to get the supers you'd normally get after killing spore spawn. Some people use a crystal flash but it's much slower coz you gotta drain your health first.
Once you've nailed the 100% single-segment run, I'd be interested in seeing whether / how much you could improve it with a segmented run.
I'd also be interested in seing any test runs that you do. I can take a look at some of the room strats, and maybe offer some suggestions, like I did with Optimo's run.
Well you know how i don't like segmented runs lol. They ruin my rythem. I make more mistakes after resetting segments and retrying them. I know the idea of segmented is to be patient and make sure you nail your best segments but i truly believe i perform way better SS. Let's say that a segmented from me would only be slightly better. Coz i do trust my consistancy over an entire run. After how much i've played this game
If i was after 33 any% i would say i'd manage it quicker SS than if i was trying it segmented. A time like that is far too hardcore to even want to save it as little as twice. When you put it into perspective it's only a few things that can really stuff you up., and that would be the randomness of about 3 bosses. Phantoon, Botwoon and Draygon. Knowing that i don't screw up too much outside of the bosses it seems the best for me to just do it SS. The same goes for 100%. There comes a time when your aiming for some extremly hardcore times that you have to abandon the idea of doing anything segmented.
I've never tried a segmented run of the game, having always done 100% single segment. How's the 100% going at the moment? Any plans, route alterations, techniques that are new?
Yea i know you was dude lol. But some people get a bit tetchy when you tell them you do something SS. I wasn't assuming you were though.
No change to the route. I don't get power bombs as early as hotarubi because i think it's slightly slower to do so. Especially as i have clever room strats to get the missles near kraid. Which utilises the spring ball. At the brinstar norfair elevator, after coming down from maridia i go east to the elevator, jump slightly, aim diagonal down, shoot a super (mid air) at the lowest block, mockball undeneath and spring ball onto the platform with the monster set in stone. It's cool and fast. Plus i think it renders early power bombs obsolete.
you'll see lots of this kinda thing in my run which shave loads of seconds off .
I'm gonna try and pluck up the courage to do a 2 rounder against phantoon. 2 rounder against draygon which is easy on 100% due to ammunition. Providing draygon fires gunk on his second round.
Ideally a 1 rounder on botwoon but is bloody hard on PAL coz botwoon moves faster on it's first round. Plus i gotta make sure all particles of the wave-power combo hit to do it anyway.
On ridley ill stay on supers for longer. Maybe firing around 10 to 15 shots before switching to charged shots.
Mother brain i'll probably do the murder beam again. I think it's more beneficial on PAL because your charged shots charge up slower. So killing mother brain the normal way would allways be slower on PAL compared to NTSC. So it's a no brainer. I know people have a hissy fit when when people do the murder beam on mother brain. But well.... To hell with them
I won't rescue the animals as i really want to get the fastest time i can possibly get. So that pretty much sums up my run in short.
So, are you saying you're doing Kraid later, with Wrecked Ship / Maridia first? Early Power Bombs are mainly used to collect that Missile pack near Kraid without having to come back later. You'd have to be damned quick in and out of Kraid's lair later (even with the better equipment) to make up for getting them on your first trip.
No i'll be killing Kraid early and getting varia suit like any% and then coming to get those missles after maridia. Also like i said i've optimised getting that missle pack now so i'm making it even quicker than it was origonally.
Over at SDA me and a friend did some testing and initially he thought early power bombs are quicker and i sed there's not a lot in it. Then he done some testing and found it to be only a few seconds quicker and that it was much more practical to leave power bombs as usual. Plus it's far more practical anyway coz you' have to do the hero shot as well for early power bombs for it to be being quicker anyway. Which is irritating lets admit.
I've no intention of getting the essentials on the first trip to norfair without the varia. HAHA
The ice freeze glitch in maridia to collect the spring ball is coming a long very nicely. Been doing some practice and i've come up with a reliable method.
After entering the room and shooting up diagonal twice to clear the floor and the hopper, space jump once but make it only a tap, then do a second space jump, hold this one and press and hold right so you go through the gap but keep advancing toward the hopper your gonna freeze, wait a second or so (mid air and leval with the hopper) and shoot. With practice and knowing the timing of the shot it's much more reliable than standing on the floor you cleared and shooting up diagonal., bacause you can judge the timing of your shot on how far samus dips from her second space jump. Around 50/50 success with it !
Yep. I don't want to have to do it more than twice though really coz i think that'll look bad in a speed run. There's also the super missle in brinstar to get that you'd usually get after spore spawn. I don't use the crystal flash like red scarlet, instead i use the well timed super missle to clear the super block. I've learnt not to run up for the shot now. Instead, i stand in the right place, do a regular jump, shoot and move forward in the air to clear the block. This is also much more consistant than before
hehe tell me about it. Probabaly ruined loads of runs thanks to those two sections.
I done my first proper 100% speed run last night (not recording) since completely revising every room and starting this thread here and on SDA. I got 57 minutes, beating my original 58 minute record i done ages ago, so i must be doing something right lol. However the run was very sloppy overall. The details of it are on SDA on the latest post if you wanna see it. I concluded that i could beat it by 2 minutes making a target time of 55 minutes. 54 being the limit from me. 54 being roughly equivelent to 49 or possibly 48 NTSC
You should still consider recording your test runs, as you may find that others have suggestions that you may have overlooked, which could save you more important seconds. Keep slogging, though, as it looks like you're on-target.
What i could do is record myself playing through the game on my 100% already complete save file. So i'm just working my way around the planet how i normally would on a real run only i'm keeping the recording time down by not collecting anything. Because the've already been collected. So it's a demonstration of how i tackle every room. If i screw up i exit the room and come in again and try again and nail it and accept that as how i would definatly conquor a room.
Good job i don't have to record ceres. Unless it's a better idea if i do the reset glitch and then when i start in ceres again i de-equip all items and then play the game as normal?
Well, you'd have to unequip everything, and then equip it again when you'd normally get it, so it'd still take time, but...
I presume you're practicing some rooms via emulator, so that's probably your easiest option. Play through the game, recording a chunk at a time, and then posting it. That way it can be dissected in smaller parts, rather than the entire run. You don't even have to have all the rooms be perfect, as long as it shows the actual strategy working
But if i do the reset glitch on console and then start ceres (just remembered you cant enter pause menu in ceres), and finish it. land on the planet, pause, de-equip everything and go from there. Surely all the items that are back from the reset glitch get equiped to you again when you get them? Like an ordinary run.
I actually practice on console because my controller for the emulator is big, bulky and horrbile. Cant play well in real time at all. My tool assisted runs were performed with slow down emulating what i'd normally do in real time on console. But yea i could do it that way instead. saves getting my dvd recorder out an posting it on youtube
Just remembered can i post my tool assisted run even if it was recorded via the basic record option on the emulator or does it have to be the avi option ?. Coz mine already on my computer were recorded via the basic record option. I'm a total noob by the way
With the .smv's viewers can just fast-forward too, which helps.
As to your question, yes, you can just post the .smv here, and it doesn't need to be .avi. That's only if you wish to upload it to YouTube or whatever. People will need to know the version of your emulator, as it can cause it to desynch.
here it is. At the beginning you'll notice it looks a bit too good to be a human with way too much arm pumping and very accurate jumping but this quickly dissapears soon after i do chozo skip. Which in itself is kinda unfeasable on an unassisted run lol
1, In the Kago room, you can do a huge jump just before the first one, and you'll sail over the platforms and stuff, landing just before the second. This is less hassle. 2, You can unmorph just before charge, and use your speed decrease to land next to it, so you don't have to land on the floor. 3, Just after exiting charge, when you unmorph, you can just jump, and mid-air morph straight into the hole, without landing again. 4, Mockballing in the Speed Booster room serves no purpose, and only adds time and risk. I suggest leaving it out. 5, In the Wrecked Ship room with the robots that you have to push back (top right-hand room), when the one you're shooting is near the hole, you can jump, and get some early shots in on the next one in line, saving a few shots / seconds. 6, When shinesparking upward, if you hold up, and then press jump, you do it instantly without the delay. (Maridia entrance) 7, Practice your timing on Golden Torizo. Getting it right means that your shots hit twice every time he jumps. 8, Just before the spiked platforms to Ridley, as you enter you can just arc left, get hit by the flame thing, and land in the hole, rather than having to shoot the pole thing. 9, As with every run, count your shots on Ridley, and use a Power Bomb to end the fight as soon as possible. 10, When exiting the room above the spiked platforms, make sure your jump arcs left, so you destroy the face block with your Screw Attack, rather than having to bomb it.
LOL at waiting to bomb-jump when you have the Spring Ball. I've done this so often.
That's about all of the stuff I could mention that's worthwhile.
