So for whatever reason I decided reciently to self torture myself and play through Other M again. It's pretty much the same godawful garbage as I remember, but I occasionally like to look on the bright side of things. If you wade through the trash there are some good aspects that I'd like to see return in the series at some point.

0% Hard mode: This was one of the few indications that anyone on the development team had ever played a Metroid game before. Removing any possibility of picking up an upgrade is a great idea. I'd prefer it to be seperate from standard hard mode though; say have normal and hard as options from the start, and then 0% hard as an unlockable mode for beating the game or what have you.

Agile Samus: So they botched the exicution pretty bad with the whole sensemove nonsense,  but having Samus flip around and use her jets for acrobatic manuvers was admitedly pretty cool. With some revamping it might be cool to see a dodging system return. Even a 2D game could have a Symphony of the Night-esque backdash/backflip move.

Charge Accel: Like every other power up in Other M this was rendered moot by the core mechanics, but it could work in a real Metroid game. It's certianly a slightly more practical way to pad out percentages than 70 extra power bombs.

Speed booster and shine sparking in 3D: Self explanitory, really.

And... that's more or less it. But maybe I forgot something.  Do you feel like Othet M got some things right? Let's be positive for once, internet!

A list of decent things in Other M:

Yet to be filled in.

No but really, I think the end was the best.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I actually quite enjoyed the game.  I just didn't feel like it was a Metroid game.

if you take out the story, i feel mostly the same way
red chamber dream
it has some pretty awful gameplay ideas though
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!

The recharge move and insta-charging after dodging rendered every single pick-up moot. There was no point in getting anything.

But this is about being positive you dicks!
One shall stand, one shall ball.
I have many problems with it but I give Other M this:

It's short! Doooh ho ho ho!
I've been thinking about playing it again.  I just start thinking about the shitty shit and then talk myself out of it.  Maybe I should try again.
it keeps all my wii/gamecube games standing up straight on my shelf. if i took it out, some of them might lean over.

it's also still in the plastic wrap.
Anywhere, everywhere
The Ridley music was pretty cool.

But I thought the gameplay was shit too, not just the story.
Shinesparking and 3rd person controls are neat (not including dumb concentrate or sense move mechanics). Dat ridley theme (and the fight too) is :O

otherwise...

one of the best m2k2 posts in years
It's ok when you can pretend it doesn't exist.
I was actually depressed for quite a while after the game came out.  It went something like this:

-New metroid announced at E3, so excited
-Eagerly awaiting all info on the new game, drooling over trailers
-Difficulty sleeping for a few days before release
-Asking for time off from work for some fictitious reason
-Waiting outside store for a few mins before they open
-First playthrough = this game's cool but it has some flaws
-Second playthrough = this game has some major flaws
-Third playthrough = the denial is over, this game blows goats
-Anger
-Rage
-Despair
-Apathy

in all honesty, from a gameplay standpoint alone, I... like the game. I ended up playing through it multiple times. There are plenty of stupid moments like all the where's waldo pixel hunts and that travesty of a ridley scene, but between all of those crap moments I was having fun with the game. The flip-between-first-and-third-person mechanic just made things needlessly complicated. It should just be one or the other.

-I liked how it felt vaguely like a 2D metroid game from a gameplay standpoint. It has many of the hallmarks, including shinesparking, wall jumping, all the upgrades you're used to. the sensemove dodging was a little overdone, but if it was polished up it would be fine.
-As bad as the writing was for many of the story sequences, i personally thought the voice acting was pretty good.
-I agree about the charge-accel; the energy parts also reminded me of Zelda games. Not really necessary but I guess it let them hid more pickups around.
-I felt like some of the pickups were hidden a little better in this game than the Prime games. Maybe I'm just easily fooled though.
-The music was solid (Though, there should have been more of it. There are quite a few parts of the game that are in relative silence)

I... really? I'm inclined to be kinder to the voice actors given the horrid material and likely awful directing but even then "ok all things considered" is about as far as I'll go.
They did their job. Unfortunately, the job they were given was pretty poo.

Here's your script ma'am.

Samus: (Like Bored Teenager) "BABY" (Repeat)

You have six hours in the booth, make 'em count.
Thats exactly what the script probably said.

Really hard for me to say one way or the other on this since they mark their exact positon on your map. Corruption did the same thing but at least they made you work for it.
I like turtles.

Well hey, at least a hit Justin Bieber song was created at the same time as this monstrosity.

What I mean to say is I feel like the voice actors themselves did their job well. It's the material they were given to work with that was crap. You can't blame the voice actors for the terrible writing.

Well, There were a fair few powerups that gave me trouble to find even though they are marked. I had to ask for help here for a few of em :p
